Mick013 2
Hey all,Just wanted to know how peeps catch their whitebait, if they can be bothered. When i was younger we used to get them with a fine net that had some fish heads in it...anyone use another method??CheersMichael
Ranger 48
Both nets and fish traps are illegal here, so if ya can't catch em on teensy little hooks, ya can't use them.
brenton 637
I.ve never seen what they sell as whitebait in the water here, just frogmouths blue bait and pillies. The rest i've always called for juvenile mullet etc etc cheers brenton
Mick013 2
Cheers Brenton.Ranger: i was just on PIRSA website and hand nets are permitted devices..such as those attached to wood/metal stick. If youve seen something different, can you point me in that direction.Cheers
Ranger 48
Mick013 wrote:hand nets are permitted devices..such as those attached to wood/metal stick. That's correct. You can use a hand or dab net. What you can't use is any form of mesh net, haul net, drop net, set net, cast net or fish trap.I misinterpreted this:we used to get them with a fine net that had some fish heads in it. believing it to mean that when you were younger you had "set" some kind of net baited with fish heads to be retreived later. My mistake.Just be wary with small baitfish. It can be difficult to identify species correctly, as juveniles can look remarkably different to their adult counterparts. Mick013 2
yeah, i should have been more clear. Sorry for that.
Highfly 0
We used to line a long handled net with fine mesh. Then smear mince meat inside.... lower it into the water and wait.Wasnt long before zillions of fish used to start feeding in the shallows.Quick lift once or twice gave you enough small livies for a decent mully or bream sesh.Caught allsorts, poddy mullet, trumpeters, mudskippers.Bream love mudskippers
matt654 0
it also works if you go in shallow water(if you fish on the peninsula then just south of Balgowan is full of places for whitebait)then throw little pieces of razor fish in the water about 1 foot away from you and use a net when the whitebait come stand very still and lift the net that the razor fish is sitting in up really fast.matt654
camaro82 0
Someone told me they saw a guy on the garden island jetty thing last weekend with a net catching whitebait but im pretty sure he didnt have a hand net!!
finatic 1
And Garden Island is within the Aquatic Reserve that starts at the St Kilda breakwater & extends to the North Arm bridge, thus allowing only rod or handline fishing in that zone. ie No Crabbing, No Tube Worm digging & No Netting.Finatic
Guest davidm#2
really finatic didnt no that, does that also mean u cant chuk a crab net off the outer harbour breakwater or is it alright
