i am very pleased to find this forum topic as i have had this on my chest for 12 months and really need to vent! . I fished a certain area from shore for years learning patterns of certain varieties of fish in particular snapper. i eventually saved enough money to by a small 4mtr runabout for inshore fishing and used all info gathered and learned and applied it to boating in the area. Had great success and took only my closest mates under the cover of darkness. By mate if mad keen and so am i to be honest so i took him out one night. He proceeded to buy a boat and has given it a right thrashing over the past 12 months taking alot of people. The problem is he went 4ths in the boat so the problem is even worse. Ive seen pictures of his crew with fish in advertiser and mags im reallllly annoyed.Ive tried to talk to him about the importance of keeping it to himself but i think he likes being the bloke that can put you on fish. i see him every day and it eats away at me how much time i put into the area only to see it dissapear in front of me. This is the first time i have made this mistake and i love talking fishing and could do it underwater and it frustrates the living hell outta me and its been good to read other stories and that u move on, well in my case noe ive got the barcrusher, further out! ahhhhhhh that feels better thanxOS

How many of your secret spots were actually given to you by someone else? This is why I don't mind sharing a few spots with anyone genuine who needs a hand! When we look at spots like the Culverts, Goannas, Freds, Clarries, Sub Moorings, John Robb, etc, etc, these are hardly what you'd call a secret. Every man and his dog knows of this structure, or if you want them a quick search of the net will put you straight on to them, but newcomers don't have a clue yet and so they come asking. I agreee Ranger, a lot of newcomers have no idea where to start, BUT .... Neither did I when I started, or probably most peaple for that matter. I know I learnt the hard way, many, many years and countless trips. Sure, help people out with a few spots but don't hand it all on a silver platter. The ones who have not done the hard yards are the ones most likely to not fully appreciate how to "look" after a good spot. When guys like this get the info on these "good spots" they very quickly become very average spots.

well spoken.. im like that off the rocks....any tackle shop or bloke in whyalla will tell anyone visiting to try black point for snapper from the rocks, and true... it does produce big snapper at times...BUT knowing just what rock to stand on, and where to cast CAN and does make a difference...people are welcome to fish with me at black point, but they are on there own in finding THAT rock... its taken me over 20 yrs to finally find it, and the rock i had before i made the mistake of showing someone, and less than a week, he was fishing it with 4 others...one bitten twice shy.my trust is no longer a given, its earned these days... do the hard yards, work with me and by yourself, and who knows... maybe one day, i might just fish that rock with others.

They are starting points, and I think that's all anyone can or should ask. No secrets revealed, as these marks are in any book or publication you care to pick up. You can find them all listed on the internet, and they are marks all experienced boaters have, and probably don't even bother fishing anymore. For anyone new to boating though, they are potential areas to go out and have a look around, while they build their own knowledge of the Adelaide area, and their own experience. That knowledge we now take for granted is valuable to them! We all know where to find Semaphore reef for example, that it is spread over a large area, and that it's a good place to pick up gar, tommies, squid and crabs. We tend to forget though, to a newcomer, they still need to be directed to where well known places like Semaphore Reef, Black Pole or the Ballast Grounds actually are.I think it's important to differentiate "secret" spots from "fishing" spots. We dont give away our secrets, but it's still ok to help others out with a few fishing marks. Not every run of the mill and well published mark is a secret we need to protect at all costs.

when i went in that pro snapper boat the other day, the skipper, cant afford to hang around in one area too long.charter operators with radar, can and do track him.. when he stops, it leaves an X on there chart... for them to try another time.so he plays the game and stops in the middle of lots of nothings for 5 mins or so... i wonder how many people have been sitting on a great secret spot, and been pinged likethis, or the old days when you were at anchor, and a boat would chuck a donut around you before heading off to the next boat... its happened to me before.

Well IMO fishing spots are like you said generally known ones but to most boaties these days secret spot X ones are i recon home made ones as most fisho's collect a lot of info from charts so most have been hammered over the years. So the only way these days is to make your own fishing spot and bugger me i dont have any and thats the gods truth.

Very interesting topic - i must have missed the original thread.

In my role, i hear and see a lot of fish pictures and generally have a good idea of what's biting where. Similar to earlier posts, i generally don't give out specific marks, although have helped a number of regular custumers get onto the fish by putting them in the right areas, with the right bait and tides.

I too have some secret spots, which i don't share, as i have been sworn to secrecy. I never fish them during school holidays and if i see a boat heading my way, i up anchor and drift. But like most boaties, i have hundreds of marks - but generally only fish a handful of them, as i know them well and they generally produce.

Hope no one minds me bringing up an old thread. Im keen to take my new tinnie out to goanna's for first time. Does anyone know how far it ruffly is in km's ?

Thanks in advance,

Hunter.

Where are you launching from? From the Black Pole the area is roughly 15k's. Heaps of spots to fish in that area. There are many areas to fish before you even get to the Goanna grounds.

Download Navionics web app maps from the internet. Its free.

G'day Rybak. Il be launching from middle beach. When the tides are right.

About 15k you rekon. Will require some decent wheather then.

Thanks for that.

From Middle Beach is only 6-7 k's straight out. Yeah, good weather helps as you punch against the wind if heading back towards Black Pole late arvo.

Better taking your new tinnie out in the Port River at the moment. Lots of Salmon Trout about, Mullet & Bream in the creeks and throughout the river, BIG Mulloway are there at night & even some decent Gar at night along the mangroves.
