SA RECREATIONAL FISHING LICENCE A REALITY!!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

On another thing that mention was helping our Native fish to come back. That will never happen unless they do something about the carp in our rivers. Thousand have just sporned in the newly fooded back waters and swamps off our Might Murray River.

Wrong, carp have very little to do with the poor state of native stocks in SA, stocking species like cod however has a big impact on carp stocks.I've lived in NSW and VIC and often required lic for both states and have seen some good come from the revenue raised, like increased numbers of fisheries officers and the revival of certain fish species through restocking so there is plenty of good that has happened in other states.Having said that i'm not confident that the gov over here would actually put the money where it's needed which is a shame.A freshwater lic only may be a better option as there seems to be far more problems in that area in SA.

I dont mind this for an idea' date=' but what about the people who only go fishing once or twice a year??Will this end their hopes of fishing at all' date=' I wouldnt pay a fee to go out once??What about kids, will they have to pay for it as well?[/quote'']I have lived in NSW and paid my $30 per year to fish and was happy to do so. but there were other optin when buying your licence. if i can remember correctly you could buy it for a day/week/year or 3 years. I think this whole thread is a bit childish. it will cost less than a carton of beer. if it comes in it will be law so no one will have a choice anyway. give them your $30 and stop crying and lets go fishing. then all we can do is hope there is some common sense and atleast some of the money goes back into fishing.Cheers Goldy
I go fishing in NSW and VIC waters about 3 or four times a year but have lic for both for a whole year costs stuff all what I woould like to see is an Australia wide licenceAustralia wide size and Bag limits would also be greatOne Country One Law seems too simple

Any fishing licence - if we ever get one - should exclude kids and olds.If we DO have to have a RFL - and there's no indication that it is really happening - I'd be happiest if all of the revenue raised was used for just one thing. Enforcement. There's no point in having reasonable rules to control the fishery if there's not enough patrols around to make sure that they're obeyed. The future of Rec fishing relies on this working! We're already paying for facilities - they're pretty good and we seem to have a pretty well regulated fishery - except for compliance.Id do whatever I could to prevent any RFL money being used to support Govt schemes that have nothing to do with fishing, and that includes totally opposing an RFL in the first place.Cheers,

I dont think it will cost any jobs... because on this site alone there has been heaps of people saying the dont like it but not one person saying they will stop fishing all together.

All I see is a lot of fantastic answers that when PIRSA or any government body reads will provide them with great feedback on the attitudes of the most diehard fisho's (Us strikehookers). But at this stage I see now hard evidence that this license will become a reality, as others have said, this has been spoken of for ages.TonyB, are you able to leak any of the wording of this document or have I missed this mentioned previously in this thread???I am kind of on the fence regarding the introduction of the RFL as it seems to have worked in Victoria, but I believe the likes of Rex Hunt with the future fish foundation did some fantastic work and gave it the positive image it needed. For it to work here, we would need some big movers in the SA fishing scene to where a hat so to speak and kick it off right. The one big problem I see is that unlike in Victoria, we dont have access to rivers and streams. In Vic you have the right to use any river provided you stay within 10metres of the river. Here we dont have that, so for me we would need a lot of change with the opening of all reservoirs to make the fishing license tolerable and seemingly value for money with the general public and especially those that dont fish much.I just think that there needs to be a lot of steps taken first before a license could be introduced. it could be time to research the process of how the Vics did it and maybe emmulate that???

good to see so many people care enough to have there say fishing licence is a reality that had to happen, not a bad thing at all. i see that theres a fair few worried about the funds going elsewhere yet i think that a fair amount of the first years revenue would be spent on the setup and monitoring of the licence and belive it would take 3 good years to see any return to the fisherys. this is normal. just think of the money spent to educate people of the licence requirements and advertising. however if this means that we have sustainable and regulated sport im all for it, especialy if the average joe now has to be accountable for there capture nothing turns my stomach like seeing baby mulloway mixed in with tommies and mullet in a bucket on a jetty. as per kids , if its like the other states then children dont require a licence all this said the gov are going to implement what they want , when they want and as a pro active angler/promoter of the sport i see it as a wonderful oppertumity

Also funds from a fishing license might go towards the employment of more fisheries officers as there would be extra $$$ for a numbr of things.

Think you will find this is unlikely, as the Govt currently puts in money at the moment to Fisheries and the rest is paid as part of licences by commercial fishers. It is more likely any money received from a rec licence will result in the Govt reducing the current level of funding they provide, to sav money.End result will be no change to the current situation, which is a joke. Before agreeing to a Rec Licence, I think it would be important that the Govt commits to not reducing their current funding levels.

Just paid my lobbie pot renewal by phone - popped the RFL question and the guy said there has been absolutely nothing heard to date.He did add that there had been in-principle discussion of the matter last year and the outcome was a potential RFL introduction in the next few years.A formal Y/N answer from PIRSA about now would be handy, methinks  Or maybe they are having too much fun viewing this thread...

I don't mind paying a fee if that fee is used for the betterment of fishing. As said earlier, enforcement would be the first place I would spend the money. To give an example, in 48 years of fishing I have only been approached by one fisheries officer in SA. At that rate it would almost be worth trying to get away without a license. Having said that, I have often been approached in NSW, Vic, Tas, and NZ by a fisheries officer. Of course I had a current license. On a recent trip to WA I had to buy a RFL as I was fishing out of a boat, if I had been land based there was no license required. This doesn't seem right. Should be that if one group of fhishers pays, everyone is required to pay.

It's been a fascinating thread guys and quite amazing the input both for and against!!The Reality is that I posted this thread on the strength of what was contained in the infamous PIRSA leaked documents! The stark reality is that there is to be NO RFL in SA at this time!!!!At the very least the powers that be will be able to gauge the strength of feeling from reading forums like these if they eventually do bring in a RFL!Many thanks to all who contributed, both for and against! Well done!!

Yesterday on ABC radio, Mike Rann stated that fishing licences had been in the leaked documents along with the suggestion of annual boat licences and both had been totally rejected. Good to hear it from the horses mouth, looks like Mike has a heart, rest easy for this year at least mates, but who knows what the future holds:boot: :fishing: .Marvellous, now I can tell my wife that the money I saved on not having to pay on a licence I can now use to celebrate with a few beers. What a win-win situation. Cheers lads, lets all have a beer to celebrate, onya Marko.

The trouble is many of us fishos have expressed how cheesed off we are with the idea of a licence, for the moment Mike Rann has said it is not going to happen, however that doesn't mean the government is not thinking about it. I just wondered as you are president of SAFWAA if we need to seriously air concerns to the government? The trouble is that once legslation is passed it is really hard to get it removed. Would it be worth petitioning via email or letter as a group/individuals? It is one thing to air opinions on S.H. but unless we say something directly will we be heard? Just a thought mate, keep up the good work. Onya Marko. ;):)

well firstly i can see this is a touchy subject both for and against have excellent points too put,id like too say from my own point of view and experience with havin too obtain a rec licence before i moved too s.a from just south of sydney,i also wasnt going too have a say on this topic at all as i dont have really any experience with the s.a gov n what they do so please dont bite my head off for my comment, but what ii can say from living in a state that has had this in for some time now is yes in the beginning all of us were up in arms screamin they cant bloody charge us for goin too the beach or local estuary to throw in a line yada yada yada, and again yes in the first couple of years we seen jack diddle difference too anything but as the rev built up our gov brought out the majority of commercial netting licences in our lakes rivers and so fourth they also installed what are known as f.a.d.s alons the cost line in various locations n due too people payin our licence fees this was the only way the gov would ever have brought back those licences and have now also created what is known as rec fishing sanctuaries where no pro is poermitted too work in those waters.ill admit i was one of the many that was dead against paying more then i already did to catch some tucker n have a night out with the boys, In saying this though i was also lucky enough too live there when the rewards started too come through for us regualar joe fisho's the pic on my profile is just one example of many fish caught along that coast of very signifigant size and species not seen along many parts of that area accept by the pro netters n so fourth for years, so in my opion i can see both sides too the coin cause ive lived with this rule for a few years myself although i would like too say this was under a different government who doesnt even charge us for the use of a bloody boat ramp anywhere in the state(i didnt beleive we had too pay too launch here until i seen it with my own eyes ). So in one way or another i agree with both sides of the coin but that doesnt mean im happy about it either especially if its not going too be used in a program such as the one in nsw. i could go on for pages but hell who wants too read that. just thought id let you know my experience with it and lets hope if it happens it happens for the right reasons. see ya on or near the water, MM

Your input is very much appreciated MM as we South Aussies only look across our borders with wonderment at the benefits of a RFL and salivate at the mouth :ohmy:We may be in the lucky country but why are we so divided in the laws and governance of such a simple pleasure as going fishing???? :SRoll on the RFL is my take, open the Government waters to the people who actually own it!! Remember, we all only elected the Government to run the Country for us, why wont they listen to what we want???Join a Club, add your voice to the groundswell of opinion! that's our only path to acheiving a positive result in my opinion!

the only thing with what i said though is from what i know at the time i left nsw they haddent opened any catchment areas too rec fishing and in my opinion is the same both a good and bad thing its good in the way it keeps the reckless hooligans out but also stops average joe from havein the oppurtunity too catch some of most prized native species within a matter of a couple of hrs from home for most people.I know from what ive read since living here that the silver is a totally protected species here and yet with it being so depleted in numbers i and many other anglers know for a fact that in just 1 catchment area alone just north of wollongong that there is most likely more then enough stock too be able too make a real difference in the numbers we have in our rivers and yet both governments dont seem too care or know about it yet they could both be doing something about it together and its not only silver perch there are also good numbers of murray cod, golden perch and yet no one is even allowed near it with so much as a camera let alone a rod, where the sense is in whats happening too our river i sure as hell dont know but i keep my fingers crossed someone with half a brain in the government gets it together and maybe puts some of the revenue from a rfl too projects like saving the silver perch in the wild

cheers i didnt know they were makin a good come back on their own thats a damn good thing too hear, dont quote me on this but im fairly sure they would find maquarie perch in the above mentioned places aswell, i guess though in 1 way with nsw catchments also off limits it can help too always insure there will be some stock of these fish hidden away from those who dont just fih our waterways but rape them like the people i reported too fisheries last summer drag netting the onk of all times in broad daylight on a sunday morning with people everywhere n yet besides myself i didnt see anyone else that was too concerned with what they were doing accept too see what they had dragged out witch by the way was plenty of baby flathead not even the size of the palm of your hand, thank god for mobile phone cameras as the pics i took were all sent too fisheries with the prosecution of the offenders still taking place at the moment. i guess what im sayin is maybe they should keep some catchment areas off limits just simply due to the fact there will always be someone who a,doesnt have the skill too catch a fish or b, just doesnt care. And with some areas kept closed i guess it will help keep the rest of us honest fisho's with fish for our childrens kids too catch years from now.

Speak for yourself mate, I certainly don't salivate at the mouth for a new tax to regulate something I now do for freeThey can shove rec fishing licenses up where the sun don't shine, Anyone that thinks this government will introduce a charge for the betterment of a special interest group is deluding themselves

There is a very definite wind of change blowing through our State government at this time! I am personally involved with this change and am very excited by it!!You can choose the option of being a "knocker" or be more positive and try to embrace these changes which will empower recreational Fishers with a very strong voice in the fight for our fishing rights!http://www.strikehook.com/forum/74-pirsa-fisheries/115473-pirsa-listening-to-rec-fishers

RJ, loved the cynical quip about the desal plant in the audio!Don`t know about empowerment per se, but if RFLs are introduced here I would really like to think the funds would go directly to items such as, at the very least, cost recovery for fishing regs brochure printing, boat ramp building/maintenance, etc

Hey RJ,That vid was a classic! And no doubt very very true. I think we, as rec anglers, pay too much as it is. Why should we pay more when 7 times out of 10, you pay a hundred bucks to take the boat out and come back with nothing. Those who say that the funds from the licence will increase fish stocks are dreaming. It certainly wont happen in our lifetime thats for sure.Keep on Fishin'B214
