Cal reacted to doobie in Get your line on tight
I spool mono through my gloved fingers with some tension, but have no idea what that tension would be.
I'll spool braid with more tension through my gloved fingers though due to not wanting the braid to be loose and creating knots/bird nest within a few casts.
But one thing I don't know how to or understand, is using xkg of drag on the reel. Twisting that dial to get a certain drag in weight tension is beyond me, so I just tighten or loosen as necessary

Cal reacted to Softy in Storm gomoku
I had the red grips one. Can't remember what weight it is. But it handled my 99cm snapper no worries also used it for whiting and squid. very multi purpose.

Cal reacted to Wert in Storm gomoku
Yep, going from memory so may be a little off on the numbers, got a 6ft green short butt 4kgish rated one for my little fella for about $70 on special because he likes green and Im an awesome dad.... Also because I wanted a new light outfit to play with. With 2000 daiwa excellor LT and some expensive super fine 6kg braid it is actually a bit of a beast and I've loved it so far used as arounder everything rod. I'd honestly give it a crack on snaps in the boat if given the oppurtunity.

Cal reacted to Knackers in Storm gomoku
I've got the black overhead erito model with a little Calcutta 200B on it. Fantastic rod. Use it for whiting and trolling for salmon. Have heard great things about the spinning versions as well.

Cal got a reaction from Squid Inc. in $200 head torch versus $20 head torch - Brief test in garage
I actually got into the whole flashlight thing , with the new batteries and led technology. Trust me there is no way that thing has 8000 lumens, The lights with that sort of output only do it for short periods of time on turbo mode because they get too hot and have an automatic shutdown .They step down to a lower brightness. As far as I know there is no headtorch with this out put.Hand held yes.I have one handheld that has a beam range of 1 km and it is only the same size of a coke can If shone in someones face on stobe mode it can cause temporary blindness, they are used for self defence.. Some of the best headlamps these days are very compact and lightweight, A brilliant brand is Nitecore for headlamps, lightweight reasonably cheap and very good quality.
There are even websites dedicated to the whole flashlight thing, pretty geeky I know but collecting them can get addictive.
Here is a brief clip of a nitecore TM06S handheld, just one of the many brilliant lights available.

Cal got a reaction from yellow door 1 in $200 head torch versus $20 head torch - Brief test in garage
Hi yellow door, there are 2 different types of beams some lighs are throwers and some are flooders. What you want is a thrower , it is the way the reflector is designed, a thrower has a deep recessed cone that is designed to punch a high intensity pinpoint beam a long way, with an intense hot spot.Whereas a flooder has a shallow cone that floods a wider area brightly but not as far and direct. Many manufactures give you an option in what sort of light you are after, anything over 5000k is whitish blue or cool white as its known,whereas2700 3000k is your :warm: colour , a more yellowish natural light. judging by what you are saying ideal for you would be a 2700 to 3000 k thrower or adjustable beam.

Cal reacted to Scissors in $200 head torch versus $20 head torch - Brief test in garage
My old man is a head torch aficionado, problem is his hearing isn't what it used to be, fishing at night you try and talk to him and next second he shines the bloody torch in your face, drives me insane.

Cal reacted to yellow door 1 in Red Neck Rebar Sinkers
Not good for much - but they are good for some applications.
Obviously dont paint them if you're pretty sure you'll lose them first go - and use at your own risk😉

Cal reacted to Aff in Reel Servicing
Going by those prices I'm thinking its more economical to buy mid priced quality reels, work them hard, but with care. Obviously avoid water and sand intrusion. Wash them down etc. after use and replace them with new ones when they no longer perform to acceptable levels.
Seems wasteful though....such a throw away society we live in now days.
I guess the cost is wrapped in the service person's pay. The value of those reels listed above would however justify their servicing costs.

Cal reacted to Heavy D in Are Shimano Nasci Reels Dunkable
Have a look at their current range. Alvey nowadays offer graphite and vented reels that have significantly reduced weight.

Cal got a reaction from Bait Caster in GLISS fishing line
Pretty much in a nutshell, but most braids will damage and fray if used around structure making checking the last couple of metres a regular thing, this should be done anyway as a matter of course ,only difference is beacause they are multi strand they still hold some integrity even if some of the outer fibres shred.Gliss seems to pinch and form a weakspot that can snap a bit easier. Its not all bad though, casts well and pretty good for general fishing.

Cal reacted to Rybak in Plano tackle storage with rust inhibitor
...and the price is ??? Just spray some Inox or even WD40 in the box & on your lures. Have done this for years & works for me.

Cal reacted to Kelvin in GLISS fishing line
Poor abrasion resistance, very thin diameter, frays over time and need to cut it back every few sessions. Can compensate by going heavier. Overall not bad if you can get it for a cheap price.

Cal got a reaction from Bait Caster in Wading bags
I have done lots of wading over the years and wherever possible I use my home made tub these days.In it I can carry everything and have mounted a pvc pipe to store a spare rod,or landing net or crab rake.I will use a bag on a beach, but the main reason I dont wading anymore is once out Thompsons beach years ago had a big lit up bronzy that wanted what fish where in the bag, not good when the thing is attatched to your waist. This thing was fast and determined and circled ,rushed at me and my mate numerous times .We were using our rod butts to fend it off.Scared me that bad ,yeah kinda puts one off the idea..😎

Cal reacted to AquaticResearch1 in Smoked Tommies/Gar.
Still don't look half bad, Doobie. Don't mind a bit of "fish jerky" myself when things are in a touch too long
I've done away with the wet brine myself and just sprinkle with salt and sugar before smoking now, saves a lot of time and I don't notice the difference tbh.

Cal reacted to AquaticResearch1 in Lure ID
Can't help with id but the black lure looks a bit like a buzz bait (variation on typical spinnerbaits) and you're correct, it is pretty f'd up, quite frankly.

Cal reacted to Hamo1234 in Snyder Glas FT 4120 vs FSU 4120...same blank?
Ha! Are these things worth anything these days? I still have a near mint Butterworth OH 4120 (spent most of its life sitting on the wharfs of Port Adelaide waiting for mullies) - from memory, it was one of the last made in Australia. Might have been mid to late 80's. And I think its a composite (black blank). It is lying next to one of my all time favorite rods from my early fishing career - a snyder glass Mag Bream - which looks antiquated and pre-historic compared to the rods in the rack these days.
Sorry - none of this answers the question however.

Cal got a reaction from bjorn2fish in Why don't I catch fish?
Interesting question....,why dont I catch fish?
I am partly blaming the internet for this dilemma, nowadays info is hand fed.Back in the day it was fishing reports in the paper, after that it was up to the individual to actually go out ,see what other experienced anglers were doing right, taking in the info, spending time on the water, working out tides, feeding habits, gathering or buying fresh bait, experementing with different rigs...basically doing the hard yards.
You can only be hand fed so much, time on the water= experience ,actually working things out yourself plus seeing from others is the key.Plus one thing my Dad always taught me is fish for what is there. No point fishing for salmon trout when everyone around you is catching say yellowin whiting for example.
Cheers and all the best.😎
