True but last time we waited and couldn't get the basics (milk, bread, eggs and meat) - so wasn't going to risk it this time

Yeah fair enough, it's unfortunate that all the people stockpiling for the apocalypse make it that your average Joe needs to get involved for a carton of eggs.

This whole year has shown how mass hysteria in the population just stops people thinking things through.

As they were doing the press release and mentioned the lockdown, I quickly ducked to aldi to top up, as we couldn't do our normal shop on the weekend. By the time I hit the checkouts, they have them all opened and had queue's out the door!! Even where I park, which is miles away from the shops was full and people waiting for my park. Absolutely crazy!!

Just quietly, the people flocking to stores now is exactly the opposite of what we should be doing.

All these people flooding the stores when it is clear that supermarkets will still be open during lockdown; why?

The people then crowd and cause chaos, potentially spreading it even more.

Just wear a face covering and go during the lockdown people, it's all good. Be efficient and plan things well and it'll be fine.

I'd understand shops that will be locked down such as Bottle shops even more so, but man, this is a great way to spread a virus, by cramming into tight spaces on mass.

...fished the 2 side by side in the type of conditions that count eg drummer in reef, snapper off the rocks bream around cover and also when fish are touchy and again fluro easily was better for abrasion resistance and seemed to keep getting bites when nothing touched the mono....

I've found this also. I tend to think it is for the following reasons

-Lighter flouro holds up better than the equivalent breaking strain mono, therefore you'll be using it in a situation where you may call for mono 50% to 100% stronger again than the flouro.

    - I've caught decent fish on 5lb flouro in complete comfort, knowing the line won't have any issues, but the same fish I would have needed to have been nervous fishing even 10lb Trilene or 6lb magnathin. Maxima ultragreen on the other hand in an 8lb or so I wouldn't have been too concerned, but I don't believe I would have got the bite due to the other characteristics of the line.

  4. Personally used nylon leaders up until relatively recently and don't think I'll go back in the lighter line classes; that is to say anything under 20lb.

Flouro is more abrasion resistant, lasts longer without weakening and personally I find it is less prone to breaking in the knot than the nylons I previously used. I used Maxima, YGK, Berkley trilene, Stren magnathin etc etc and the rockfish FC outperforms them all.

In anything over 15lb I use black magic leader material. Really rate it for everything from surface whiting (yes I use 20lb for yfw) to livebaiting kings, bottom bashing etc etc

Edit: should add that the shorter spool lengths of Flouro do mean you replace them more often and probably help when it comes to not letting the line get too old; which is probably a good thing for anyone that doesn't remember the exact date and Moon phase on which they bought that spool of mono.

I just had a look at the Penn.... It has the line capacity, has the drag weight of 18kg.... It has a slower retrieve of 4.7:1.... Will that matter? they are roughly the same price, to the Shimano C14+.. But the baitrunner is preset on the Penn? Is the Shimmano reel baitrunner preset? Ide like to be able to set it to the weight I want.

Im going to be fishing high, over the waves.. so hopefully the wave wash wont matter to me...

    and

I used to have the older Penn gold reels 30+ years ago... brilliant reels.. Are the new generation of Penns the same quality?

The recent Spinfisher VI gets good reviews from those that use it in very punishing conditions. Well sealed; but that's not really an issue if you aren't getting it wet. I think they might have a bait runner feature available, would need to double check.

    Cheers mate.

Im glad the 1st lot of lures i sold are to fishos that actually fish and catch fish. So hopefully they come back with some good photos videos etc....

I'M hoping to get out alot more myself now that my overtime got taken from me at work. Plus winter trout fishing is alomost upon us so I'll be looking to paint up alot more trout lures...

My biggest issue is finding blanks that not only work bu are going to be readily available for me to get..

Plus i don't want to step on other lure painters feet. Hence why i haven't painted any cod/callop lures...

It's also a case of do you bulk paint say 5 different types of lures in say 3-4 different patterns And sell bulk or do you go with paint what i feel like and try sell it? If it sells great. If not i guess it can be mine to use. Haven't decided yet.

I'll  keep just painting lures and creating my own styles and if i sell a few great! If not no big deal... i know that when i do get a chance to  go out to fish I'll only be using my lures and Rezbait plastics. All my other brand name lures have been packed up and put to the side...

If you managed to get onto any bent minnow blanks, Southie, I'd be very interested. Anywhere from 70mm to 180mm I'd have a use for them.

Was painting up some more trout lures tonight and i stuffed the paint job on one of them. So instead of throwing it away i painted over it completely with black paint. Then decided to think outside the box...

Grabbed some pearl paint and well the photo speaks for itself. Well i think anyway 👌

So it is opaque black as the base. Pearl green top. With an pearl Magenta body and gold stripes...

I recko this will be one colour ill paint as one i will sell ;)

Absolutely love that one, a bit of the SX40 colour 'carmen red' on the gill plate would absolutely set that off imo. Absolute ripper of a colour.

Would be a demon on rainbow trout

I know people hate clips... But Decoy 0 or 00 with a locked blood knot.. Never let me down!

I've had a bit of trouble with these bending out of shape and needing to be re-adjusted with pliers. Have you had similar? Maybe I'm just being a bit ham-fisted with them but it's a recurring theme at this point.

  9. FG knot initially, revert to an improved Albright if conditions don't allow re-tieing a good, reliable FG.

Honestly the only time I'll find out that my Albright isn't as good as an FG, is when I hook a snag and end up having to lock up. Even massive rays and things, I've tied an Albright and they've held without issue. FG just casts better and is a better connection for when you've got to really lean into something.

Hi guys, I need some help.

The last few times I've been out have been soft plastic sessions along North Haven, outer harbour.

Im breaking my drought and managing to entice a few ST's which I am stoked about, however, every one basically dies in the process.

They are swallowing the hooks, and are suffering serious damage in Gill areas. They come to the surface already bleeding heavily, and most hook themselves on the drop, so I don't think it is an issue of striking too hard, and it's not a handling issue.

I'm using 2"/2.5" curl tails and flick baits with jig heads of 1/12 or 1/16.

Am I doing something wrong here? Im normally C&R, and it's making me not want to go out again if I'm just killing undersize fish.

Any tips or advice would be great. Thanks guys!

If anything, sink the lure on a semi slack line rather than an overly slack line. It sounds like they are using the excess slack to choke the lure.

It can be somewhat unavoidable at times, if you're chasing the trouties, maybe it is worth changing to a shorter jig head or wider gape hook also. If it really bothers you, maybe just fish tighter to the rocks.

It's tricky and can be hard to get around at times, but if it seems to be an unusual trend, the above may make a difference.

Thanks mate.... Ill try both methods, Knots and crimps and see what happens..

I fished Point Lowly and kept getting snapped off with 30lb braid/40lb Leader.. So Im going heavy and heading back there soon.. Im determined to find whats out there.

No worries mate, just make sure there's plenty of spit on the knot and you make it bite down hard. Normally I'll get any random that happens to be near me to grab the rod, lock up the drag and point the rod at me, while I pull as hard as possible to tighten whatever knot off.

Haven't had a uni or FG come undone in anything less than 150lb this way. I've used black magic supple and Jinkai.

That makes a lot of sense! I will try that.

Oil floats. Great for Garfish. But for other fish on the bottom it needs to be soaked into pellets that sink and release it from the bottom.

Any particular brand you use? Any bulk buys?

I am looking to attract fish into an are before throwing lures at them 😉

    Cheers, Des

To be honest Des, you make a very handy point.

Oil isn't soluble in water, and fish smell what is in the water by passing water through their Nair's (nasal holes). So really, while we all pump out tuna oil enriched Burley, it's likely that unless fish happen to swim directly into the feed, they will only very faintly or not smell it at all.

I do believe it works when soaked into other Burley stuffs, but really, tuna oil may just be one of the more overutilisef things in fishing imo.

Better off using bloods and such, hence why "bloody" fish like Aus salmon seem to be such a productive bait.

  13. Personally, if it has a split ring, I don't bother tying a loop and instead use a uni knot. I find the split ring gives the lure enough freedom of movement that an extra loop of mono doesn't make a massive difference.

However, if the ring is cruddy, I'll ditch it. Keeping in mind that with small lures, it may seriously effect the weighting and not let them dive as steep, as early, or to their full potential depth.

Horses for courses though, if you want or require that extra freedom for a certain style of fishing, by all means ditch the ring and tie a loop knot right to the tow point.

Didn’t have a great time fishing Sunday double clutch snagged by fish number 1 . Got it back with the snag . I couldn’t see that fish but it felt reasonable. Second fish all I could see was a silver flash and it hit well. Then it happened lost the fish nothing unusual until I look at the lure . The lure was tip top after the snag both trebles on . Second fish took the treble and left the Diawa split ring pulled apart . Never happened to me before yes I’ve had trebles with one bit  broken off never had the entire treble gone !

    anyone else

Yeah I've definitely had that happen Micky, particularly with the smaller Daiwa lures. Mainly happens with either repeated jaring hits or suspected mulloway strikes on the stock terminals.

Tend to upgrade any lure over 60mm for where I fish now to avoid losing good fish.
