This was another of my late season spin sessions in a small tannin stream & it was great to come across a freshwater lobster. They were once plentiful in the rivers/streams here in Tasmania but due to very little catch rate restrictions they became scarce in the rivers/streams. Now they are a protected species that carry a $10,000 fine if taken from a river/stream.
    cheers

I have well ova 100 squid jags from free to $30 and have caught them on cheap ones to dear ones but I do have about 5 of my go to. Jags and if used with the technique I wrote up under squid then it don't matter if it a cheap one or a dear one as long as it's right colour as the sink rates don't apply
    Cheers and share the ink

Me too. Cheaper the better. Still get squid. Nothing beats a tommie on a skewer jag if all else fails.

    Really appreciate the tips guys!
I haven't managed many trips but just came back from a couple days away at Port Julia on the Yorkes.
Managed 3 squid although the tides weren't great. Tried the paternoster rig but tide was so low kept snagging on the weed bed - got the 3 all on slow retrieves. Planning another trip for Rapid bay next month so keen to try the rig again. Cheers!

Ripper of a fish taken on such a small fly & even better when it's one that you made.. well done, that catch is going to stay with you for a long time too.. A great achievement in landing it as well without the use of the landing net being too small. I had that same problem several years ago when I hooked & landed a 8lb 8 oz wild brown trout, my landing net was too small at the time too. Not a good feeling when that happens.
** Congratulations on the PB too..
    cheers

I was chasing trout recently, I tied a few ruff wooly buggers the night before. Free style.. and pretty happy with them too.. I also Tied on a brand new 4lb leader.
About 12 cast into my session, I felt a real heavy weight load up on my 5 weight Fly Rod. "Wow that's a big trout". It sat on the bottom and held my there about 5 minutes. It was an impossible trying to turn its head. It finally turned, it came too the surface. F+++ me !. It's not a trout.. then there was several heavy runs. A 10 minute battle in the end. I finally got it to surface. I grabbed my trout net off my back. Took one look at it and threw it. Pfft.. useless. Somehow I managed to land this fish.
What it was doing eating a tiny wooly bugger?  I have no idea. How a size 12 (garfish hook) pinned it in the corner of the jaw and didn't fall out ? I have no idea. Why my 4lb line didn't snap. Again I have no idea.
    It was definitely my day.

The fish measured 92cm. Estimate 30lb.
    Also a PB for me.

I don't know who stocks  Okuma spinning reels in Sth Aust Micky, but I found this reel to be a very reliable reel. It's not a large reel and it's light weight and very reliable,it's really not all that much bigger than a 1000 reel either.

I'm a lot older too Micky that's probably why & been trout fishing for 57 years too so that helps. I used to fish (salt & fresh water) on a regular basis back when I lived in Sth Aust as well, was a member of the Henley & Grange Angling Club for several years back in the late 70's. One of my good mates back then was a top fisherman by the name of Robert Kelly, he was a top angler of both salt & freshwater fishing fishing and won many titles in Sth Aust, sadly Robert (RIP) passed away many years ago.  The Mersey Rivers is a nice scenic river to fish any time throughout the trout season that's for sure.
    cheers
