I just noticed this post from way back, and thought it might pay to add this little video.  Fast forward to 4:30, and watch through to 5:30, it explains how the lake fills, and drains.

Got a couple over 6lbs over the years, this one was 6.5lb from memory, around 87cm long and fat, had to gaff it as it was on light line with a small lure!

Nokia reacted to RedReeler in Lower Yorkes Trip for Salmon
Hi all, this is my first ever report posting here so suggestions are welcome! hope you all enjoy.

    Friday:
Woke up early on Friday and headed to the old man's place to finish packing up the trailer before heading off to Butler's. We left his place about 8am, ready to meet my brother in law and my other sister's partner at Pt Wakefield. On the way, we kept a wary eye on the dark clouds and swaying trees hoping it was a bit calmer down the bottom of the Yorke and we'd be able to wet a line that afternoon..

Fast forward a few hours and we arrived at Butler's. Andrew was as cheerful as ever and after a brief chat we managed to arrange to move from our normal camping spot to one that was a little more sheltered from the wind - Turns out it wasn't any calmer down that way. We unloaded and walked to Salmon Beach. There were some BIG breakers around but a few calmer spots we thought we'd give a go. We stayed for 3 or 4 hours but the only thing making our reels sing was big clumps of seaweed. Ah well, nothing for it but to head back to camp, start a fire, light a cigar and pour a bourbon.

    Saturday:
Saturday morning seemed a bit calmer and we were keen to try again. Again Salmon beach was full of weed but conditions were a bit calmer. No action though, and we went back to camp for lunch and to get a curry going in the dreampot for dinner. We then went down to Butler's beach. I wasn't holding much hope as its only the next bay over and I imagined the weed would be just as bad. Well, I was pleasantly surprised that there was no weed in sight!

We weren't long there and dad hooked a ~45cm salmon and a bunch of tommies and mullet in the shallows. The others only managed a tommy each... and I didn't even get a nibble. Dad's one of those lucky fishers that can go out on a jetty where no one has been catching all day and hook up on the first cast.....hard to love him sometimes! It'd be an understatement to say I was not happy, but hey. That's fishing. A nice hot curry back at camp got me in a better mood (or maybe that was the bourbon?)

    Sunday:
Sunday morning was our last day of the trip. We woke up and cooked up some brekky and discussed if we'd try Butler's beach again or maybe leave early and stop at Point Turton on the way back for a flick off the Jetty. It was decided we'd have a look at Butlers and see what the conditions were like. It was calmer again and was a BEAUTIFUL day. So we thought we'd use up the rest of the bait there and see how we were going. Well...5 minutes in, I was on! After watching the acrobatics and a bit of a fight, I pulled in a 60cm Salmon weighing in at 2.5kg. My PB and the biggest of the trip! I was ecstatic! THIS is what it's all about! This was the feeling I'd been chasing! Dad being dad, managed to hook one shortly after, but it was smaller at around 56cm.

Alas! now we were out of bait! We sent the brother in law up to grab some more pillies while we threw around some metals for a bit.. but just as quickly as they came, the salmon were gone... I managed a few more mullet and that was it. Time to head home.

    Here's a little video I put together.

That's a very good point, I struggled with that when I first started targeting them. But once you land a few, you will feel more confident and persistent. Always worth the reward when you catch one, nonetheless.

Ever since the first time I hit the Onk this season, I've been hitting it almost every week! It started off with a slow session on the salmon, so our plan B was to fish the Onk, although we didn't have the right gear, we emphasised and managed to land a few good fish! 4 fish were landed the first time between James and I. Biggest went 37.5cm.

The fish turned off for a while so we finished the day off at the jetty. A nice school came by and James and I landed 2 fish each around 45cm! We were stoked and wanted to do it again.

The next time we headed down, it was a lot more breezy and cold.  The water was a chocolate milk colour and our hopes were lost. We started flicking and soon found a school! We both landed a decent fish each and dropped some too. We continued and found another school, same thing happens. Biggest fish went 39cm and FAT! But the majority of fish were over 35cm. Killa fun.

Once the tides changed, the fish turned off so we decided to check out the jetty again.. Unfortunately, the salmon did not want to play this time.

With the bloodworm run taking place around metro waters, we hit the Onk again!     This time the condition were nice. We were welcomed to the spot with a glassed off river and a slight breeze. The water wasn't as murky as last time, but it was still quite dirty. We fished the same spots, and soon found a school. They weren't as active today, but in the end, we managed a couple of good fish. James hooked a bream that would have easily tipped 40cm but unfortunately it spat the hook!   Loved the photos James took today, epic!!

I had planned to fish with Nathan, Kwok and Kelvin on Sunday. Same plans! It was one of the best days (weather wise), but the fishing wasn't up to standards. As Nathan and I moved along, Kelvin and Kwok decided to hit another spot in the Onk. They caught a lot more than we did! We worked hard for the fish all day, but I only managed 3. Biggest went 35cm.

Now for my trip to Port Augusta! I'm sure there will be a report, unless I donut!!
Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed the report.

I'm 40 odd and can't remember these not being in our household, they would have to be 35 years plus.
Old man didn't do things by halves, pegs solid steel and drilled through so the PVC could be secured.
I've never had to change a screw.

So I wanted a sand spike/rodholder for a beach trip I have coming up, but after looking at the prices for prefab ones, I thought I'd have a go at making one myself. My main requirements were for it to be sturdy yet lightweight.

    Materials;
    50mm x1m PVC pipe
    25mm x 25mm x 1.4mm x 1m aluminium angle.
    ~60mm hose clamps (x 2)
~60mm bolt with wing nut to suit

    1) cut the pvc pipe in half
2)position it in the groove of the angle and attach with hoseclamps.
You could leave it here if you wanted it but I did a few extra little things.
    3) drill holes to push the bolt through both sides of the pipe - towards the bottom. This way the butt of the rod will sit on the bolt rather than letting it rest on the reel at the top opening. You could drill a few holes and easily move the bolt to suit rods with smaller butts (hence the wingnut for easy removal)
4)attach a bit of rope so you can sling it over the shoulder.
    5) cut the bottom of the aluminium angle to a point to allow it to push into the sand easier.

    Here's the finished product.

If I did it again, I'd use thicker aluminium (3mm or more) or steel angle. I aimed to keep the weight down as I need to carry it a fair distance to get to the fishing spot.

The Winner: Coconut Oil is The Healthiest Oil For Deep Frying

    Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is your best choice overall.

Studies have shown that even after 8 hours of continuous deep frying at 365°F (180°C), its quality does not deteriorate (2).

Over 90% of the fatty acids in coconut oil are saturated, which makes it very resistant to heat.

Saturated fats used to be considered unhealthy, but new studies show that they are a completely harmless source of energy for humans (3, 4).

Additionally, coconut oil has numerous health benefits. For example, it can help kill harmful bacteria and viruses, and may even help you lose belly fat (5, 6).

Keep in mind that some varieties can leave a coconut flavor or smell, so I recommend that you try a few different brands until you find one that is suitable.

Had an arvo sesh South of the BHP at Ards on Friday just gone.
Stacks of squid in there, managed our 30 quite easily while at anchor chasing the Snotties.
    Managed 20 Snotties.
    Was happy with that.

So if you want get a mulcher  and recycle left overs.

Nokia reacted to wilda in GOOLWA BEACH
    So,

I get home from work with some holidays booked and keen as to get away for some time to unwind with the only problem being where to go, tossed around hooking up the boat for a river trip but when in I walked in to the shed and seen the surf rods that haven't had a run in close on 8 months my mind was made up a over nighter to Goolwa .

Thursday morning with last few items throwen in I hit the road at 6.30am. Pulling in to the beach car park around 8.00 am, I set about dropping my tyre pressures via the strawn's. It really drives me nuts seeing 4wd still running road pressures chewing up the beach for no reason. Anyway after a easy drive to the mouth, I spent some time watching the dredge working and at the unbelievable numbers of seals around . I picked out a nice little hole set up camp and had the rods in by 10

With the 1st rod loaded with a st fillet

2nd rod with a pilly and a popper

The first bite came around 1pm and  soon had a beautiful salmon on the beach ,bled and in the esky .

A long wait till the next bite around 5.30 and was surprised to have caught my 1st salmon on a popper

After missing a huge hit on a whole squid head, the cold and poor footy game I decided to  pack it in around 9.30pm and climbed in the swag.

Friday morning rolled around still bloodly cold but great conditions I had the rods back in by 6.30am. I fished hard again all day changing bait every 20mins till the next bite around 1pm again, this fish didn't fight very well the reason eviedent with a trace and hook coming out through the gills. I don't know how long fishing line needs to be in the water for the growth on the line to get to that stage but it couldn't have been pleasent

Come 3pm and I packed up for the drive home , with 20 hrs of fishing for 3 fish not the best, it was great to get away and enjoy some great weather and camping.

A quick pic of tea, fresh salmon patties yum yum
