Softy reacted to MAH in Marino Rocks - Land Based
Headed to Marino Rocks this morning. Water was reasonably clear. Weather was a bit average, wind started to pick up and there a slight drizzle.
I had waders on so was able to get out to a nice little rock ledge and start casting around jigs.
I used slow sinking jigs, but still snagged a couple of times. Luckily I was able to clear the snag each time.
Caught 2 squid over 1.5 hours, not great but better than a doughnut.
As the tide dropped I saw a lure wedged in a rock, which turned out to be a 10g Halco twisty. Nice little find.
A good way to spend the morning.

Softy reacted to Des in VISION versus VIBES
That was a great video 👍 😀
Yes it is very similar terrain to what I fish on the northern Sandflats and similar fish behaviour.
I will be back into it next week, after having survived a dreadful winter.
Cheers, Des

Softy reacted to Soobz in DIY leashes, particularly for kayaks
I have been using bungee leashes for a while, they are reasonably tangle free, cheap to make and you make them to suit the item being leashed.
eg. the basic leash
It's a bowline loop at each end. the carabiner end is a smaller loop usually, and the larger loop is for rods/handles.
eg.
I've found the bungee holds on to the EVA great if you make the loop snug for your rod, and I don't usually slide it very far down, but you can if the rod butt allows.
I did try putting it around the reel stem for super security but it gets in the way. I've never had the bungee accidentally come off the rod EVA, I don't have a cork butt rod so it might need some experimenting there. Smooth butt rods like Sephia/Zodias I'd have a tighter loop.
The carabiners I clip to my seat and the leashes stay on there permanently, so you could possibly even do without the carabiner and tie the bungee to the seat.
You can make these leashes for under $3 each. I was using the Pinnacle 5 x 50 snap hooks at around $10 for 12, but they are not available atm. Next best seem to be
https://www.bunnings.com.au/taskmaster-5-x-50mm-316-stainless-steel-snap-hook-2-pack_p0237922 at $2.35 for 2
4mm shock cord seems to work best, it's certainly strong enough and doesn't tangle easily
https://www.bunnings.com.au/grunt-4mm-x-5m-black-shock-cord_p4310533 $5.20 for 5m, or get 20m for $16
I leash pretty much everything:
2 x rods - about 1.2m of bungee seems right, it will allow fishing on both sides
1 x net - probably a similar length but depends where you store your net
1 x dry bag - long enough to get it to my lap from behind me, less than 1m, uses 2 x carabiner
1 x phone/key IP68 box - this is under my seat, and it's short, maybe 0.5m, uses 2 x carabiner

Softy reacted to MAH in Sun Shirt Recommendations
There was a special via the Columbia online store and I was able to buy the Tamiami fishing shirts for $29.85 & free shipping. So I grabbed 2 for $59.70.
Got the shirt I wanted at heavily discounted price!

Softy reacted to Soobz in Buying JDM (now is a good time)
I promised in another thread I'd post the guide. It's covered in these 2 videos
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wQ66LXFFJw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yR3iW2dvai4
As previously stated, really it's the high end reels/rods that make most sense, those items under $300 here won't be any cheaper usually. But over that they can be half the price.
However, braid/leader can be way cheaper, so can most terminal tackle. If you do buy a reel it's often free freight, so always buy a reel with line.
And that's the main point, freight can kill the prices, so buying with mates might be the go or buy a lot at once.
I've had good results with digitaka.
Be warned though, there is no warranty, however Japanese shops are typically very honest and will try to help if they can.
I'll post a few of my prime picks later.

Softy reacted to Soobz in Flash Boost squid jigs
How late am I to the party? Well, I figure I won't be the only one so others who are yet to discover the Sephia Flash Boost squid jigs, check them out. Tried one out yesterday, and even in the murky atm Seacliff area (some kind of shore works pumping sand into the cove) and a shit tide it still caught squid when the other lures did diddly squat.
Video doesn't do them justice but:

Yes, I agree with that Soobz, they are great jigs and like you said when all the other jigs showed no interest, the flash boost hooked up immediately. I lost mine at Porties 😡, and had to buy another one, be it they are expensive at around $20. I have the orange/ pink colour. If I see them on special I will probably buy another one in different colour.

There was far too much passing the flicker around on the weekend for my liking - we did a flatty drift and there were 3 blokes constantly hooked up on micro flatties. This was causing a queue for the flicker - that will not happen again😉
Upgraded the flatty flickers to Stainless Steel from an old pie warmer tray I found.
The coat hanger ones are good (left in the first photo)- but they arent as robust as a bit of thicker stainless.

Softy reacted to yellow door 1 in Whats your Favourite way to cook fish?
Been cooking up a few whiting fillets recently and its got me thinking.
Im all about shallow or deep frying - either dusted with flour, herbs and spices or batter made from the same ingredients.
I have been accused of overpowering the taste of the fish in the past - but thats how I like it - and I can still taste the fish underneath it all
The main flavours I use are, italian herb mix and garlic powder mixed in with the flour.
If Im feeling saucey I'll drizzle over some sweet chilli sauce over the fillets right at the end, so the sauce caramelizes but doesnt burn. Finish with a squeeze of lemon - a bit of salt and add a dollop of tomatoe sauce and Im in heaven.
The photos arent the best but the taste makes up for it😉

Softy reacted to MAH in Whats your Favourite way to cook fish?
Depends.
Tommies and garfish I sprinkle salt and pepper, then dust in flour, before frying quickly in a lightly oiled fry pan.
YFW I like to crumb in panko crumbs before shallow frying.
Crab, I like to make serve with spaghetti.
I also like to make tommies into fish cakes.
In summer, when I catch most of my fish, I have loads of home grown tomatoes, cucumber, basil, chillies etc. for the salads. I get a lot of satisfaction from serving a meal that is mainly made from what I've grown and caught.

This should shave a few seconds off the braid reversing process😉

Softy reacted to Soobz in Your favourite whiting rod
Tackleworld Adelaide have another 20% off atm, obviously to match SFS. I'd happily buy from SFS but *every* rod I was interested in was out of stock even before the sale.
Anyway, enough head scratching, time to buy, and the winner was;
21 TIERRA 702LXS Light 2-10g 7'0"/213cm 1.5-3kg 2 section ,Extra Fast taper, ~90g
Wasn't actually on my list, but the same grip as the Infeet won me over everything else I handled. I also liked the extra fast taper, more backbone than the Infeet but pretty much the same tip from the last 2 guides. Somehow 20% off $179 came to $119, could not say no.
BTW, had another look at the Crucis Tempest VXS (not solid tip), and I was very tempted.
Heaps of great light action rods these days, damned hard to choose even when price is not an important consideration. What I have come to be more aware of is grip shape means a hell of a lot to how much I enjoy a rod. It's the difference between feeling like you're holding the rod vs. it being an extension of your hand/arm.

Softy got a reaction from Soobz in Your favourite whiting rod
I used to use a Gomuku Red with a 2500 on it as a snapper rod to chase snapper on plastics. But with a quick rig change it turned into a awesome whiting rod. Well until it went for a swim at Marino.
Planning to get another before snapper season opens again to use on the kayak.

like a new born giraffes legs😉
I did want some thing sturdier but I had to be able to push them into dirt by hand - so I had to keep them spindly. The only sturdier steel i had would need a hammer and that would send shock waves through the shallow little pond I made them for.
I stuffed up some strikes and missed some fish last week due to my unco rod removal from the low to the ground holder - the raised holders were a reaction to that.
I used them today and the extra height is great - unfortunately only one eel showed up to annoy me - the lake was teeming with decent reds last week before the rain

Softy reacted to Meppstas in The rewards of small stream fishing.
Just as the title reads, this is a video I put together on the rewards one can get from fishing small streams and it doesn't have to be in Tasmania either.
As most of you know it was in South Australia where I first started out chasing trout in small streams back in the late 60's. I hope you enjoy the video..👍
cheers
