  1. or has anyone had much luck with those maggot buckets
  2. I've only done a few batches of maggots over the years and stopped because it was such a filthy stinkin business. And as I was using lamb hearts - it was almost as expensive as buying the maggots from the shop. Has anyone played around with the milk powder and bran method https://www.naturallyforbirds.com.au/flies-without-tears-a-personal-approach-to-maggots
  3. Yeah those drones would save a few hours searching for activity. As kids - We thought we had our burley game sussed by asking the local baker for old bread - getting tubs of bread crumb is next level
  4. Yeah - when bait fishing, winding right handed is probably a good idea. Having your smart hand doing the winding is often taking care of the most complex part of the process But when it comes to accurately casting lures, Rex reckons you should have your most intelligent hand doing the casting - especially when casting single handed into tricky spots. The right hand should also be able to more intricately work the lure, as it spends most of a right handers life doing all the tricky stuff. I didnt find the switch super easy - but I just kept a rod next to the couch, with a left hand
  5. Yeah those bow and arrow casts can come in handy in dense cover - and they are pretty accurate over short distances
  6. Yeah when Rex Hunt said the dominant hand should be on the rod, I made the switch and havent regretted it. re the soundtrack - I first heard his skills the other day and thought it suited the Swampy feel I was going for
  7. How to break bulk spools of braid into 100m topshots 1. Measure it out on a rugby pitch (100m try line to try line) 2. jam 2 sticks in the ground 10m apart run the line around them 10 times 3. use your reel and the manufacturers guess as to how many cms of line is taken onto the spool in one turn of the handle. (this guessed distance will be for a full spools) 4. Buy a line counter and turn it around so it counts line coming onto the reel
  8. Yeah those Norman speed clips look like they would be hard for a fishes mouth or a rock to open accidentally
  9. The little clips are pretty strong but some people have said they have had trouble with them opening up - part of me thinks they didnt shut the clip correctly. - but their could be other factors at play. Rocks catching on the clip under strain and pushing the little keeper in and opening the snap could cause them to fail early. But its never happened to me
  10. I started using clips when fishing for Jewies coz I like to throw 3 different lures at a spot before moving on to the next - and I dont like casting with long leaders - so after a few spots, my leader would be getting short after tying 3 uni knots at each. Then I started just using clips for all my lures - the only time I dont use them is on very delicate lures like 35mm plastic vibes and little stick minnows that need to flutter on the drop. And they do have a habit of catching weed in very weedy spots so I dont use them with little weedless presentations. I tend to chase every
  11. yeah - if they're going to eat a fish with a lead head and a hook sticking out of its back - A slightly hunched back probably wont be the final straw
  12. Do you reckon a thicker band over the eye would stop it snapping
  13. ARe you wearing orange undies when you fish? - that could be the problem.
  14. Yeah the majority of people that replied elsewhere didnt seem to have that issue with zmans either - but it has been a real issue for me in the past with the old "snap-backs"|. I think it has alot to do with the skinny lead collar style keepers on the majority of my jigheads. Users of TT head locks jigheads were particularly surprised that some people find glue necessary As you can see from the photo below - the TT's offer a better chunk of lead to be pulled over and grip onto than my standard heads
  15. Yeah we used to work the bay rockwalls with SX40's for the pinks which is alot of fun - but the versatility of plastics is hard to beat on the pinkies
  16. Yeah getting pantsed is predominantly a micro pinkies on plastics problem. Heaps of aggressive hits that dont hook up when you strike is the issue. But I specifically bought the ZMANS to target pinkies that hang around bait schools so white is a half decent match - it could be better but it will do
  17. Yeah I'm the opposite when it comes to colours - I just pick one and stick with it. It takes a fair bit for me to change these days - I used to be mad for it but now I just cant be stuffed If they arent hitting little bait fish profiles I will switched to a worm if I'm near some worm beds but usually I just put my faith in bait fish imitations. When I do change plastics its usually to a different weight head, profile or hook size. But I do carry a few pre-rigged in a little tackle box in my pocket in case the toadies move in.
  18. Yeah I gave it my first try the other night and was very impressed with the results
  19. I recently went through a rather exhaustive search on what superglue people use to attached ZMANS to jigheads. The glue is to stop fish yanking your plastic off the hook or pulling it off the keeper - or "Getting Pantsed". This is a serious issue when getting 100's of hits that dont hook up, while chasing small snapper. Here's what I learnt 1 - most people have never heard of using superglue with ZMANS 2 - those that had, like loctite gel super glue 3 - Most people use TT Headlock jigheads with ZMANS and claim getting "pantsed" isnt an issue 4 - Some claim getting pansted i
  20. I've never tried squid but I have got them on small squares of limpet, so I can imagine squid working well. My techniques rely on working them into a frenzy and getting them to compete over a small bit of berley with my bait in the middle - so they may be more open to less desirable baits. If I wasnt using burley, I would probably pay more attention to the quality of my bait. If I had to guess - I'd say live sandworm would be the ultimate bait - but they will eat red meat, chicken and dough pretty readily when fished in a burley trail. Hook size and bait size are 2 things I pay seri
  21. Good call on the toughness of the bait - the mullet I chase are very good at taking bait off hooks - So I get a chicken drumsticks, peel back the white flappy skin and there is a outer coating of tough skin underneath (like silverside) - I make sure my baits have a silver side backing. If I use the normal flesh from inside the drumstick they find it much easier to rip off. I spose its a bigger issue for me because I chase small mullet on tiny 3mm by 3mm baits There can be many different sizes within the same school - the ones under 4 inch can be a real pain and waste alot of preciou
  22. This is for rivers and still water scenarios I do 99% of my mullet fish from an elevated position, like a jetty. I Berley them up to the surface so I can watch them eat the bait I use them for livies, so I want to get 20 really quick. Small 3mm squares of chicken or prawn on a size 12 long shank hook. And I use a "Flatty Flicker" or just hold the hook upside down really firmly and 9 times out of 10, the mullet will wriggle off the hook, so I dont have to touch them and mess with their slime coat. I wouldnt catch many at all without a bread crumb and canned cat food berley -
