  1. I'll add mine to the list, although it's pretty tame and ordinary by comparison!I've never done much more than spike myself with a fish fin, get a small cut from my bait knife, or slice my finger on braid. One late night out on the Outer Harbour Breakwater though, I was fishing with a friend new to fishing. I warned him of the dangers fishing the rocks in the dark, and told him to watch his footing.I found myself a large flat rock to perch myself upon, and while rebaiting on my large flat rock, I inadvertantly took a step backwards, doing my Homer simpson impersonation (DOH DOH DOH) as I bounce
  2. There's nothing in the tournament rules about taking bycatch, so's ya can go ya hardest! In having said that, Projoe does raise a coupla very valid points. You wouldn't want your bycatch in the livewell taking up valuable space. Carrying empty eskys onboard does look a little suspicious on a tournament boat (unless you have your lunch and drinks in it). Fishing against the clock for target species on comp day, I wouldn't be wasting time worrying about bycatch, as that can be reserved for a practice day or leasurely day out on the water. When a good tournament result could net you around $1000 or
  3. Only a few little spikes and scratches? Not one lost limb or case of permanent insanity bought on by being constantly outsmarted by a little fish? Lift ya game guys! I do recall once incidence a few years back. The member I "believe" from memory was Voodoofish (correct me if I'm wrong), who was spined by a stingray. The trip to hospital and subsequent testing actually showed up that he had a brain tumor he was unaware of at the time, so his unfortunate incident actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise, and a life saver for him!
  4. Get a copy of the Adam Royter DVD: Berkley Soft Plastics. It's packed full of very helpful information which will explain more than we could ever put into a post. It covers lines, knots, reels, rods, techniques, jigheads, plastics, and more. It's cheap, and it's available at most good tacklestores. I'd recommend it to anyone just starting out.
  5. Afraid we dont! They hang out along the east coast of Aust.http://australianmuseum.net.au/Australian-Bonito-Sarda-australis-Macleay-1881
  6. Calcutta CT50, Wilson Sovreign, 4kg Finns Braid. An overhead/baitcast outfit certainly isn't required for whiting, but I have a ball playing with this teensie lil outfit over a range of different species.I'd suggest the largest threadline outfit you would need for whiting would be a 2500 sized reel, and for whiting a slower tapered rod a little longer than normal...maybe up to 8'.
  7. I've always boiled crab, until a member from the site (Hoopsy) introduced me to steamed crab at his Crab & Gar day at North Haven last year.Shell, clean and half the crabs. Just a little saltwater in the bottom of the crab cooker, stick em in the basket and let it steam away for about 15 mins.I'll never go back to boiling!
  8. They haven't made that braid yet.All light braid will get wind knots occasionally. The way to minimise this is to ensure it's tightly spooled on a braid friendly reel, and to retension it at regular intervals by winding it back in under pressure between your fingers.
  9. Gotta admit, I'm not a fan of large snapper, so I generally only take the littlies up to about 55cm to be baked whole. For the big one's I generally get them frozen solid in the deep freeze, then I'd take them to my butcher on a Saturday morning (just before he changed his bandsaw blade each week) and get him to run the frozen fish into cutlets for me.These cutlets I would stick in alfoil parcels with a little butter, lemon and pepper, then either chuck the parcels onto the bbq or into the oven.I found this method stopped them from being so dry.So if ya wanna come fishing with me, feel free to
  10. When I spotted this thread, before putting my hand up to ID the critter I was gonna ask if it tasted like peanuts!
  11. Icky spike to the brain or a sharp blow to the head.
  12. I've never been a big fan of multi-piece rods, and I've always considered ferrules to be a weak point.Having said that, technology has improved, rods are much better than they once were, and the Raiders seem to be gaining quite a following with respect in the marketplace for a reasonably priced rod.If you have to travel and you need portability, compromises have to be made, and I dont think you'd go far wrong with a Raider.
  13. Nope! The Saltiga is all about a gutsy reel, with no bells or whistles whatsoever, and as such, nothing to break under extreme pressure. If you want a baitrunner, my own preference is for the Shimano's, but they'll never come close to handling or taking the strain you can put a Saltiga through. In my eyes, prior to these Saltiga and Stella reels, things like sampson, tuna, marlin on a threadline reel were unheard of!
  14. I can only assume you have carefully camouflaged your trailer to keep it safe from feral fingers in your absence! :ohmy:Gotta ask how you even get out of the place without choking the engine in weed? :huh:Without rubbishing anyone, if I had to put up with that on a regular basis I too would be seeking a new launch spot!
  15. Sorry, I'm not a good christian......WHEN is easter?
  16. About all I can add, is when you are quietly paddling your kayak around in one foot of water and minding your own business.....BEWARE!The sudden appearance of a wing breaking the surface into the air on each side of the kayak, and the water all around you exploding can really scare the living bejeesus outta you me when not expecting it!
  17. As many seem worried about using such a reel from the beach......How about the Saltiga Surf?Cheaper than the standard Saltiga, and especially designed to handle all the beach can throw at it!http://www.daiwa.com/reel/detail.aspx?id=199
  18. Gee, you could have a very good reel.......or a very good reel! Both are the ducks guts, so toss a coin, or decide which brand name you have a preference for......how could you go wrong!
  19. Just a few questions I see evident in this statement:What is this marine infrastructure and water authority? What is it's aim and purpose? Why wont there be any environmental studies performed prior to dredging and disposal? Surely this is a prerequisite for any proposed project of this magnitude?Should cost blowout (as normally happens) does that then mean less in the kitty for proposed pontoons, boat ramps and artificial reef construction, or will more dollars then be forthcoming to ensure these projects still go ahead? It sounds to me like a very broad statement, with little forethought, and

  21. I wont imagine they will taste "bad" but Salmon would be "better" if first bled.I stick my fingers in their gills and snap their head backwards to sever the backbone and bleed them out as I catch them.I imagine they were also in an ice slurry in the esky to keep them fresh.Scale them, gut them, and then butterfly the whole fish to open them up flat. Use a toothbrush to remove the bloodline down each side. Soak them in a brine for 1-3 hours. Dry them out thoroughly, sprinkle the flesh side with brown sugar, and pop them into the smoker for around 15-20 mins.Smoking is all about experimentation.
