  1. Netman, yeah i wont have the time on this trip as ... im kinda working to get into a boat trip. if i did.. id probably take a half day charter some where and use all their gear. at this stage ill have a couple chances i think for fresh water holes and ill def have a chance off the beach and a jetty up at cape york base camp. plus i may have a couple chances while at Cairns near palm cove area.
  2. poppa Snake, cheers, but i have an option on one of them already.. i find it a tad heavy for my needs and doesnt quite suit what im after. im thinking 7' and 5-8 or 6-10kg rated in a 4-6pc set up.im taking a Shimano technium 4000 with 2 spools, 20 and 30lb braid. probably with 50lb mono leaders.
  3. So.. i got a phone call yesterday.. asking if i was interested on doing a trip up to the cape.. and a second phone call today.. Confirming.. i got the job! so im taking a 4wd truck from Cairns to Cape York and back on a 14 day tour. i have a few options to fish. but since i fly to Cairns tues/weds next week i wont be able to take much gear with me.So im asking folks on here whats your recommendations on travel rods.. and does anyone have one second hand suitable for the fishing from shore based locations up there???also.. have you done Cape York? how was it? any hints and tips???Che
  4. are you only allowed to fish FROM the breakwater or can you fish while walking the flats?"The change is effective immediately, with fishers now permitted to line fish from the breakwater in both directions when tide conditions are suitable."from, PIRSA's post. the way i read it your still only allowed to cast from the rocks of the breakwater itself. not wander the flats?
  5. so land based is ok to fish after the 15th of december.. but the usual november to 15dec is still a ban. only those listed coordinates are banned from the 15/12-13 to 31/1/14 ?
  6. top work mate! looking forward to to seeing results!
  7. bit of info re Sealions vs Fur seals. Sealions are an Eared Seal, Fur seals are a true seal. Australian Sealions have an 18month gestation period with a 7-10 day rest period before the mother is then on heat again for 24-48hrs. Sea lion pups weight 7kg at birth. bull sea lion in mating season 300-400kg. mating agression is high. this = squashed sea lion pup.often the male sealions do kill babys and this happened on the Jones Island colony this year. we lost quite a few pups just after birth. the colonies are few and far between so this makes genetic inbreeding a possible issue. recen
  8. good bait for crabs, crays, salmon, snapper... ive used it a fair bit.
  9. we did this story this time last year.. http://www.strikehook.com/forum/5-general-fishing/222794-nz-fur-seals-at-murray-mouth?start=15#225122and i repeat my post from back then..10-13000 Aussie sea lions left in Australia.. 300,000 NZ fur seals.. Its seriously time to do somthing.. Penguin colonies are depleted even the cuttle fish in whyalla are low in numbers.. I'm not saying its connected but.. now its connected!
  10. read that... i just cant work out what sort of people could ever do this.
  11. he had no chance on the 650c! running 30lb mono.. a yak only poses at max 20lb of drag.. probably less...
  12. love your enthusiasm mate. great to so kids out there fishing and enjoying it so much!cant wait to see the vid when you hook into some 4-6lb fish!!!maybe a litte less " jigging" of the bait though?? ive never used that system before.. but you seem to be catching fish still
  13. yep.. they go wild on weedy whiting... red mullets not bad either.. and when KG fishing and they go off the bite.. drop a jag down. or attach a jag to yoru top swivel.you'd be amazed how often you pull up a squidly!
  14. same same... Atomics were great plastics in their time.. i still have them in my kit.. they are my go to reddy grub.. in 2-3" purple...
  15. Crusher.. if he was or wasnt.. its a valid comment. Highway pressure on beaches and peopel that brag that " i did it all in 2wd" are just senseless morons. ripping up the tracks and making it harder for everyone else! Not having a go at you.. but it is MUCH easier and less stressful on your car and the track if you drop to 20.. how was Gunyah in comparison to the mouth? i love the trip across to gunyah! and gunyah beach is so super soft!!!
  16. def not a 4120!! love the feel of it.. and ive only given it a bit of a lash around the back yard.. 4oz and bait is my main casting weights.. cant wait to head off in a few weeks/month down to coffins.. taking this and a snyder.. one each alvey/spin. cant wait to load it up!!
  17. as with many things... its cheaper to buy it over seas than on our own shores...Even Coopers Pale ale.. brewed 7km down the road.. is cheaper to buy 16,000km away...
  18. ive been saying for years.. that the heavily fished industries such as this need to have their EXPORT numbers cut. yes they get big $$ overseas but that is creating a situation that we are harming our fisheries to feed the rest of the world. cut exports/quotas for 3-5years and watch how fast things get back to healthy numbers.ofcourse it will cost jobs and probably see a few people out of the industry. but it will save many of the fisheries in the long term. whats Australia's crayfish total catch? How much is exported?how much is kept for Australian consumption?i know its all about gl
  19. whiting in reality is bland and tasteless...a fish for people that dont like fish... such a soft flavour.. i prefer a stronger flavoured fish!
  20. yeah standard issue rock cod.. blue throaters and groper are the exception
  21. caught at one of my groper spots, put up a decent fight on the big gear.. but can be amazing fun on the bream gear!!!but this is what i was targetting that day.. I have enjoyed both species.. think they are both pretty dam nice on the plate!!
  22. think ive killed 3 rays in 30yeras of fishing... each time was for smoking.. and when i had plenty of people to eat it so none was wasted. there is a lot of recipes out there for it. i do like the idea of that curry above..
  23. ive just got a metho burning hot smoker.. for less than a hundred bucks.. was a good way to get it... real time experimentation with how much heat and what saw dust to use is the trick..
