  1. For the small species 260 yard of 8lb is heaps. I would just top shot 100m of 6lb braid on top and go from there. At the moment I prefer size 1000 reels for most of my light fishing and they would only fit 80 to 90 yard of 8lb mono. They balance much nicer with a light graphite rod and I can get a full 100m of 4lb or 6lb braid on the reel. This is more than enough for most species.
  2. Thanks BennyLet us know how it fishes. At that length it should cast really well.
  3. Looks good Benny.I have been looking at the same blank myself for a light surf stick. How long is the blank and how much did you chop off? How much does it weigh? And what strength line will you run on it?CheersKelvin
  4. Caught a few landbased tonight off Outer Harbour
  5. Are you talking about a net or a trap?
  6. Nice videos RangerAlot of useless mucking around in most. The best way is still the rapid string removal technique. No need to enlarge the puncture site or poke it through to cut the barb. A quick pull and it is out, only thing left to do is check tetanus is upto date.Only exceptions are if the bard is caught on a tendon or the hook is near nerves or blood vessels, and penetrating eye injuries.
  7. I agree that lead fumes are also an issue in term of lead toxicity and that melting lead to make sinkers needs to be done in a well ventilated area.My understanding of lead toxicity (excluding inhalation) is that absorption through intact skin is almost negligible. Usually toxicity occurs from small lead particles from paint, dust etc sticking to the skin and then people ingesting it. From my brief glance at the medical literature, the main cases of acute poisoning have been from children eating lead sinkers or pellets. Chronic poisoning occurs from the slow buildup of lead dust and then child
  8. Solid lead is inert. It needs to be ingested for toxicity to occur
  9. Sand Whiting Sillago ciliata found in the eastern states only. Not found in SA. Very similar in looks and habits to Yellowfin whiting.Yellowfin whiting Sillago schomburgkii have a size limit in SA as do KGW.Silver whiting Sillago bassensis have no size or bag limit. Weedy whiting are a type of wrasse that look very similar in shape.
  10. At the moment theres Tommies off the jetty as well as the odd squid.I have caught a few whiting not far from the jetty in my Kayak, so a big cast straight off the end with cockle or squid will see you in with a chance for king george whiting.Snook are a bit hit and miss, but can be caught off the jetty at night. And in the shallows, the mullet will bite on small pieces of mince.
  11. Flinders ED. I am in the training program now. Shift work is tough and I usually work most weekends, but that leaves me days off during the week to fish
  12. Thats a nasty cut vb4mePenthrox, when abouts do you work? I too am in the health field
  13. Nice work MikeI do something similar but hear the pipe with a blow dryer, then use a beer bottle to flare out the end.
  14. It will attract mullet. Many fish will bite on flesh of their own speices. Eg. gar, yakkas, tommies, ST.
  15. Srick, where do you get your dacron from? For the light stuff I just use uni to uni.At the moment on my heavy gear I just use a bimini, then cats paw to a big snap swivel. I am looking to make up some wind ons, but haven't seen any dacron readily available.
  16. With lures, I strongly recommend upgrading to a graphite rod and light braid. With a powertip and mono, You loose a lot of sensitivity as well as casting distance.
  17. I've caught good salmon, bream and flathead on pieces of carp.
  18. Its disappointingly small. Some slimies and squid caught off it as well as a few tommies and gar.I fished off the new jetty amd caught these last week http://www.fishyorkepeninsula.com/images/attachments/ucBqNQlO__DSC01633_Small.JPG[/img]
  19. The van staals are definitely another option. I don't think they are half the weight. All the biggest model Vanstaal, stella and saltigas all weigh over 800g.The van staals are marketed as near waterproof and used over in the US for stripped bass in the surf. They would be ideal for wading the Murray mouth and fishing for Mulloway. The main disadvantage is if you needed to service you would need to send the reel back to the US. Also left hand wind and no bail might take some getting used to.
  20. 19lb caught on a tiny soft plastic in Canberra http://www.fishyorkepeninsula.com/images/attachments/qNPyskGY__DSC01575_Small.JPG[/img]
  21. I have been catching plenty of squid on my favourite blue colored cheap jig which I picked up from one of the site sponsors for $1.67It is a blue size 2.5 jig which I have made a few modifications to. The jig has a few dots along the body and some red to represent the flare of a baitfish gills. I have glued on some 3D eyes made from silver paper hole punched into a circle, permanent marker and a drop of epoxy. The feathers have been replaced at least once and the hooks sharpened numerous times. Rips have been repaired with nail polish and the jig is a nice brown color from squid ink and tuna o
