w2Bf - I reckon I read somewhere once that gar normally feed on weed, algae and small sea creatures (plankton?), but after the winter blows, flies would lay their eggs in the rotting seaweed and any fish carcases that had been washed up - the next big spring tides would wash out some of the developing maggots and the gar would come in close to feed on them (that was the theory, anyway - might be just crazy enough to be true!).Cheersaf

    G'day all,
Nearly all my fishing these days is done with lures, but I cannot resist the temptation to go out and scoop up what I see as the prime bait for metro land based fishing... The mighty Bloodworm.🙌
Soooo much fun... Out on the rocks in the pitch black on a windy wintery night with a head torch and a net.😉👍
Last nights conditions were, what I see, as just about prefect for land based collection session. I chose a slightly different spot than in previous years after a little recon the night before. Worked out well as I left after about an hour with plenty of worms, for my needs, and they were still running out in big numbers.👌

Sunset from the night before sussing out a good position.🤔😉

    The view last night.

    The Bloodworms.🙂

    Cheers.

archerfish reacted to Kuerschie in 2018 Fishing goals
With this year nearly halfway through, I thought it be time to revisit some fishing goals I had set for this year. I was wondering if any other S&H members had any fishing goals for this year they’ve ticked off or aim to in the next 6-7 months?
Personally I’ve had a good year so far with a lot of new PBs and new species ticked off including first SBTs and samsonfish, PB snapper, kingfish, flathead, callop and cod etc.

For the rest of the year I have a couple more goals to tick off. Mainly a salmon over 4kg, new PB kingfish (>5kg), new PB bream (>42.5cm) and hopefully come summertime I can get into some yellowfin whiting on poppers.
Anyone else have a couple of fish to tick off this year?

archerfish reacted to Meppstas in Tiger snake & a threesome..
Got a bit of a surprise this morning while crawling through some bush to reach the river.. As I came out of the bush at the rivers edge (still on hands & knees)I came across a Tiger Snake sunning it's self.
I think it got the biggest shock as it darted straight into the river and headed for the opposite river bank. Halfway across it turned around and headed back to where I was now standing in shallow water.
I just stood still and watched it swim past me before it was back in shallow water next the river bank. I reckon the reason it turned around was because the water temperature was so low it new it was in trouble.
Once at the river bank it just laid in the shallows with it's head out of the water while I took a couple of photos before I moved off and started fishing..
Then some three hours later when I was back at the car I came across a threesome in the grass....
    cheers

archerfish reacted to Meppstas in A 1.6 kg KG Whiting caught in Tassie..
Here's a photo of a 1.6 kg KGW caught here in Tassie last week, with a legal size of 35 cms and a bag limit of 5 fish per person now in place here a few around that size would be plenty any way..
There's also a limit of only 10 KGW allowed per household as well.. With more KGW being caught down here they Fisheries thought it wise to bring in these regulations because there weren't any on them before.
KGW are becoming a common catch across the North & the East Coast of Tassie in the St Helens area and fish in the 50 cm - 60 cm range are quite common.
