  1. COMMERCIAL fishers have been temporarily banned from using crab pots along the metropolitan coast until the end of April. Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Minister Gail Gago announced the ban, which will stretch from the southern Outer Harbor breakwater to Marino Rocks, starting Thursday.Ms Gago said it was introduced to ease tension between recreational and commercial fishers during the most popular fishing period. But the state's peak recreational fishing body, RecFishSA said the ban did not go far enough.RecFishSA secretary David Ciaravolo said a longer-term solution was needed to ensure r
  2. 8/0 gamakatsu circles for me. Have caught undersize (around 35cm) up to the biggins on them. Also often use a two hook sliding rig for large baits, such as whole slimeys / tommies etc.
  3. Right - After a little research.I would go with a Juvenile Dusky Morwong (also called Strongie)Matches with the Dorsal and tail fin shape as well as distinctive spotting with white tips on the tail fin. Would also be fairly common in that sort of area.
  4. One definite - Kingscote Jetty (not the main one - the small one next to it with all the tender vessels for the cray boats)Not sure on the fish. Looks a little short and stumpy for a shark and the swimming action looks more fish like, than a shark. On another note - Great footage. Can't get over how clear it is.
  5. Firstly, all fish would have to be legal size (if they have one). All fish would have to be caught / supplied by a licensed professional fisherman, no different to any other fish / bait that is sold. The professional fisherman would have to have a way to catch and keep the fish alive all the way to the tackle storeSome species would be terrible to keep alive long enough to sell to fishers - eg garfish.Given the size / cost issues, many species would be cost prohibitive, due to their table value.A possible scenario, would be a haul net fisherman, that catches a large amount of small shitties. Th
  6. Its not compliance fault that so many people do the wrong thing. That is the anglers choice to break the law.It is only the lack of compliance that more don't get caught.
  7. Do you believe that, that is their only job? From their own words: (1) An object of this Act is to protect, manage, use and develop the aquatic resources ofthe State in a manner that is consistent with ecologically sustainable development and,to that end, the following principles apply:(a) proper conservation and management measures are to be implemented toprotect the aquatic resources of the State from over-exploitation and ensurethat those resources are not endangered;( access to the aquatic resources of the State is to be allocated between users ofthe resources in a manner that achieves opti
  8. Silver Perch and catfish are protected, so you shouldn't be trying to catch them.
  9. I have heard of plenty going out 'just for a fish' as well, just to see if 'they' are around, that think it is fine to catch and release them. They know what they are doing.
  10. I think you will find you can cut up legal size fish (if they have a size limit) to use as bait whilst on the water.
  11. You realise the daily limit is 300 per person? Thats about 2 - 3 kg of legal size cockles
  12. I think you will find he wasn't the only one fishing with shark gear (wire and large hooks) at the time, which is the illegal part.
  13. Easy - $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
  14. No doubt this would be fascinating at times, but is this information for members only or is it provided to other organisations? / clubs? / scientists for research? / government?
  15. This may seem ignorant, but what is the information you gain from tagging and releasing fish used for???
  16. My understanding is person can not take over their bag limit no matter what. ie 1 person can take 15 squid / person / day full stop. The boat limit is only there to limit the total number taken from the boat, and therefore limit the number of individual bag limits that are caught. So when you have more than three people on a boat, each person can take a maximum of their bag limit individually, but combined with the other individuals, also cannot take over the total boat limit.Whilst it is granted and accepted that because the boat limit is in place, it doesn't really matter, if all the p
  17. Old boats are common, just tow out and sink. Also old rainwater tank, with cement poured in the bottom.
  18. Gamakatsu 7/0 Circle hooks. Reel in gear with drag set. They pretty much hook themselves, then just hang on.
  19. You need to understand' date=' at the end of the day, it is a politician, (Fisheries Minister O'Brien), that will make the decision. He is a politician. He does not care about fishing or recreational anglers. He cares about public perception / votes. That will make the decision for him.Again, most of the mums and dads that take little Johnny down to the beach for a swim and sees a fisherman bring in a [i']'Man Eating' [/i]Shark panics and says this must be stopped. They think the sharks are there because people fish for them and fear one will eat their child. This is the attitude that ne
  20. Just seen it on Channel 10 news. I reckon we're already stuffed. The Fisheries Minister agreed that it didn't "look" good and they we be looking at a ban in populated areas. All the Media hype just adds fuel to the already blazing fire.It may already be a "done" thing.
  21. Unfortunately Jack, I don't think you need to convince people on this website. I am sure that the members on here know that it is absolute rubbish. The sharks are there regardless of whether people fish for them or not and always have been. The general public just don't like seeing them or thinking about it and want someone to blame for them being there. this is where the poor recco fisherman gets the blame. The problem is, that as usual it will be that vocal minority who yell the loudest and I can see a time coming in the very near future where shark fishing will indeed be banned. This wo
  22. Great work Jack.Looks like you've been doin it all your life.
  23. I think you will find that the growth rates are very different in SA, due to different water temps, food sources etc. Going on that rational, a 1m fish would be about 70 yrs old. Not sure they live past about 35 yrs.80cm fish are around 15yrs old here.
  24. My 2 cents:The issue I have is all the money currently paid, as far as taxes to go fishing (petrol, registration, gst, etc etc), goes to the government. They then decide how to what to spend it on. Currently almost none of this goes towards fishing / reaserch etc. Most money that goes to support fisheries comes directly from commercial licence fees, ie user pays. Which is also why they are listened to.I am scepticle to think that the little money gained from a rec licence, in relative terms, will improve recreational fishing.Currently the Govt puts in a mesley couple of million a year.
