20 1/4" (about 51-52cm) when fishing the hot water at the power station 39-40 years ago on a freshly pumper tubie. Nearly lost it-went like a steam train and I thought i had a mully and was waiting for it to ease up before the second run lol Released it as Dad always told us to let the big rare buggers go as theyre the breeders and so anything over 15-16" (approx 45cm) was released

spog777 replied to Compleat Angler's topic in Strike & Hook Competitions
wow the tide must be moving in on the finish time for the competition as the waters white with frenzied fishing folk bustling for a position within the squidgie stakes  -
rattle lures are a good option. I only fish where i can score light on the water from jetties or a nice full moon. My first mully was a night catch using a simple brass lure at torrens island

Mango i was looking at the enviromental impact rather than predatorial one. 40 years ago we were fishing the murray and it was full of reddies and cod-which were in turn full of reddies. We caught monster cod back then and the decline mainly started to show once carp settled in. ergo i think reddies are only a minor pest and not the major problem for river species

Ive been using alveys for about 40 years and have never had a problem. Theyre great low maintenance, easy to use and no hassle with exploding when battling a big fish. Always make sure you "tie" your line onto the real before winding on line (i use a double loop-less pressure when you get spooled so a bust off is less likely) I have taken to using an alvey open runner on my heavy sports and my beach rod . Found it handy when i hooked up on a couple of rays. To get into casting i would just practice on an oval and see what suits you better. You could use the casting style illustrated in the alv
