Unfortunately, about 30 years ago we started paying ferals to breed.  Not surprisingly, they did.  This is just one of the many, many undesirable consequences.

This is a picture from the web site our boat. Double catch over midnight caught 4 then had to wait til 12 then caught another 4.
Berley techniques were talked about height above bottom at different time of the tide, trace setup to minimise dogsharks and rays talked about.
Some GPS marks around Ardrossan given to us but have not used them for years. Still use most of these ideas today just not marks.

So as some of you know I worked at Fishing Wholesalers for the last 2 and a bit years.
However my last day was on Saturday. I know there are alot of members on here that i have put onto this site that i wasn't able to let know of my resignation as it happened so quick.
So i thank you for being great customers to me.
I am no longer in the fishing industry anymore. I might return to it in a few years time if things go right
However you will now find me in the electrical industry as a storeman in town.
Now to enjoy fishing like i use to without the pressures of the industry
Expect more reports me in the near future!
    The bug is back!

Took this at 5:40 am this morning just before the moon set, grabbed the little fishing camera.. didn't have time to get the good camera out.
The bigger & better camera would have taken a better photo, frosty night & morning forecast so hopefully I can be ready for tomorrow morning when it sets..
    cheers

doodlebug73 reacted to Rod in tuna rigging
Not saying this is related but was talking to an acquaintance who was fishing with a friend at the cape for snapper when they saw tuna busting up.  They put out 1 rod each, the friend with a brand new lure.  After the friend had hooked 3 tuna and failed to bring any to the boat, the skipper asked to have a look at the lure.  It still had the plastic protective case over the trebles, once removed, the fish came in to the boat
    Cheers

Some of you may know that the Onka Stompa BBQ crew were setup on Saturday at Mile End Bunnings to help raise funds for The Childhood Cancer Association.

Doobie, Dain, Jono, Nigel and myself were manning the BBQ and after a flat out day managed to raise an awesome $2,023.80 to add to the Onka Stompa kitty for the end of year comp.

The next BBQ will be in September!

doodlebug73 reacted to Bloodworm in Bloodworms for Bloodworm
Headed out to "Moonta North" on Tuesday evening with my trusty deckie, three days after the New Moon to see if the bloods were running and to check out the new lights on the boat.
Launched a few hours before dark to sus out the spot and then moved out about 5kms for a little fishing till sunset. Did not expect to catch anything due to the timing of the Bloodworm run but what else do you do apart from look at the stunning scenery from the wind farms to the start of the Flinders Ranges. Expected to catch a few squid but surprise, surprise George decided to come to the party and had enough for a feed before we had to head off.
Moved back to spot x and sat around chatting and adding layers of clothes until about an hour after high tide before switching on the lights.
We had some severe reservations about being out worming this night because there were ZERO boats out apart from a pro that was out wide. Do the locals know something we don't???? Are there no worms to be had on this perfect June night?????

    No butterflies here.

Soon after turning on the lights we were again stunned by how alive the water was with small fast worms (I don't know what they are) and before long the first Bloodworm appeared out of the darkness. About 2 hours later we had about 4 litres of worms. We were allowed 8 litres but 4 was plenty and wanted to get back home by 2 am to get a few hours sleep

I will finish this report when I reduce the size of the pic files and let you know how we got on with the preserving and storage. Stay tuned.

Felt like a change tonight after turkey patties (deep fried) So had some oysters I thought I would do a bit of "infusion" So started with sucked oysters, but placed 2 in one shell.  then added some sambul chilli and some minced garlic topped with lime and salt AND caster sugar and lime with Parmesan cheese. Placed under the griller (watching all the time) pulled out and enjoyed a really nice way of oysters with attitude.

My oldest son and I have been hanging out to get the new look bertram of ours on the water and catching and relaxing..a last minute decision as the winds droped off seen us heading to Ardrossan. There was 8 trailers in the park and no pros wich was met with delight.we gathered our bait ..at ardrossan port jetty wich was a heap of slimy macks..we waited till around 100pm till we headed to my drops and look for signs of fish..first drop 4 km of ards no sign of fish move to the next drop south of ards called sarges..no sign of fish ..i was getting a little worried.so we headed to the combyvan ..was small fish around but i was looking for larger specimens. So of to my favorite drop mussle bed/lacounrues...as i was 200ft from the mark...the sounder lite up and the adrenaline was pumping i marked the fish on the sounder. we didnt even drop anchor. My son had a bait in the water withing seconds ..i droped my bait in staight away within 30 seconds double hookup of reds.. screaming drags i had my fish to the boat first so it was a little hard netting your own fish but managed ..hooks out put the fish back ..and hepld my son net his fish wich was a lovely looking fish with a big lump on it head .Fish returned quickly..back over the fish wich hadnt moved much..baits down bang on again. With big head shakes and power runs. Just luv it..fish boated and returned..the fish had moved a little and looks like we broke the school up ..we anchored up and mannaged another 4 bigish fish around 5kg then was swarmed by good sized ruggers .was back at the ramp before sun up and the heat started..but pleased with the 5 hour session will be over again soon in searh of that larger fish..

doodlebug73 reacted to plankton in clip down pulley rig
A forum member PM'ed me about pulley rigs, but I couldn't figure out how to post images in a PM, so thought I'd just throw a new topic up.

Here's a whole rig, I always use 80lb mono for the sinker trace, and for mullys often the hook trace is the same, but sometimes 60 or even 100 or wire if the toothies are around. The hook trace must be a bit shorter than the sinker trace.

This is a closeup of the Gemini clip, the swivel that acts as the pulley, and the beads on either side that protect your knots. I use a big swivel because the eye is thicker and doesn't beat up the mono as much, after a few good fish you may need to replace the rig, better than losing the fish of a lifetime. Always use good quality stainless steel swivels, brass swivels are crap and have no place in saltwater fishing.

Here's the hook sitting in the Gemini clip attached to a sinker. It's a 7/0 Gamakatsu octopus circle. The weight of the sinker pulling down keeps the hook engaged. When the whole thing hits the water they separate and your hook and bait drift free.

After casting let your sinker bed itself then wind up the slack, have your drag tight enough to set the circle hook but not so much that a good fish pulls your setup into the sea. The design will allow a fish to pickup the bait and move a bit before the tension sets the hook in the corner of it's jaw. Another bonus is that the sinker is up away from the fish and the seabed on the retrieve.
