My old man is a head torch aficionado, problem is his hearing isn't what it used to be, fishing at night you try and talk to him and next second he shines the bloody torch in your face, drives me insane.

Haha - trust me, I understand your pain.

I would have to be the most considerate head torch user known to man.

I always ask for permission from fellow anglers before turning it on and I'm extremely mindful of where the beam is pointing.

The guys I fish with are veteran head torch users, so the "rookie errors", alot of people make, do not occur in my circle.

I have introduced alot of people to the joys of head torches but after a few years I started giving safety briefings before handing them out😉.

For instance - If I was going camping with a new crew I'd always buy some cheapies from bunnings. (Mainly so they would stop asking to borrow mine😉)

Watching a newb use one for the first time, is a night mare.

Direct blasts to your eyes - Shining them over the water at inopportune times and "over use" are the major crimes.

But on the head of a considerate gentleman - A head torch is a weapon that has greatly increased my catches - my head torch has been responsible for unlocking angling secrets that would never have been discovered otherwise. - this fish would not have been caught if I hadn't "Head Torched" the area the night before 🙂

Ocean mullet are nice but mullet from muddy creeks such as Price, Port Wakefield etc are pretty average.

I certainly don't have this done pat by any means, hell, only my 3rd go - over past 18 months
So I filleted the Tommies and butterflied the Gar and put them in a brine of 1lt water, 1/4 cup salt and 1/4 cup of brown sugar and in the fridge for 24 hours+.
Got my 'deluxe' Mojiko smoker ready but only had Samba Poultry/Pork chips, so they had to do.
Smoke vent was only just open a tad and smoking well.
Thought maybe 45 minutes but this 30 minutes in, so them off.
Look over done to me compared to other that have a darkish tan, but they tasted ok - a little dry maybe.
The Gar didn't have as much darkness to it and the taste was milder than the tommies.
Practice, Practice and Practice   ......  and catch more fish would help too

Any decent seafood resturants use weights. Alot of fish will curl. When i cook any fish weather it be whitting or garfish il use a saucepan lid and push hard on the fish skin down. Creating contact with the skin and pan. Crispy skin. No curling.

13 Fishing Envy Black 7'1" with 2500 Stradic Ci4+ running 8lb Daiwa TD Sensor braid. It's a pity I'm working this Sunday or I'd be trying it out down at Onkastompa!

Not fished this beach nor that gulf very much but up here in upper spencer gulf, if you fish creek mouths on the outgoing tide it is almost unfair using poppers, only fishing in about 40cm of water, anything higher than half a metre is no good. Haven't had much success on sand flats, I have found you need some kind of structure to find they hungry fish. Walk-the-dog lures when its calm and poppers when there is some blow.

Just a word please (or several).

Some time back I decided to no longer be involved in the politics of fishing in SA - but this current situation is a step too far.

This issue is not between recs and pro's. It's about Govt policy and PIRSA's implementation of that policy.
It's really about what's best for everyone involved and (primarily) for the SA fishery itself.

I'm absolutely certain that there are pro's who are just as concerned about the future of the SA fishery as any rec fisher - probably even more so. There are also some pro's who will take advantage of any opportunity to legally make a large profit from this public resource. Nothing wrong with that either - provided the focus is on the long term well-being of the SA fishery itself.

We seem to have run off the rails a bit lately though because the fishery is undoubtedly suffering, and the finger of blame is being pointed in every direction. Talk of blanket bans for pro's and over extraction by recs is counter productive unless there is a clear understanding of the fishery itself, and of each sector.

We are chasing around at the grassroots level and demanding that each other give way. But there are organisations in place on both sides - and with PIRSA in the middle - who have taken on the responsibility of representing their own sector's interests. It seems pretty clear that it is the management level of these organisations who need to be currently taking the lead - in conjunction with PIRSA - to get together and establish some form of agreement. If possible. Even if an agreement is not possible, the reasons why should be clearly defined, and the problems that need to be addressed should be clearly documented for immediate action. This should be a PIRSA responsibility, and should be expected to lead to political intervention at PIRSA's own initiative.

The current emotive environment is not helped by errant fishers (on either side) who have added to the fire through selfish activities, and is being further fueled by aggressive personal interactions on social media - which by themselves cannot possibly achieve a lasting solution.

If everyone truly holds the future of the SA fishery above all else, there is no good reason for the continued "them and us" environment that currently exists within fisheries management in SA, and has for many years. With a fundamental belief in the long term well-being of the SA fishery as the only focus, the logical next step would be for PIRSA to call a summit at the management level of each sector and to then (if necessary) take the outcome of that summit to the political level and sort this out.

Please note that I'm not making any distinction between RFSA and SAFA as legitimate representatives of rec fishing in SA. Each have their own following, each has a right to be heard.

My 2 bob's worth - thanks for your time. My opinion, and I could be wrong.
