For what it's worth........I actually operated an excavator when the lakes were first dug back in the early 70's. I was a keen fisho back then and knew that with the tidal system that was to operate in the lake, there would inevitably be little and then big fish in there. In '75 I fished almost daily In July from Towpath reserve just before dark when tides were right. Using a surf rod I could cast right out to the middle of the lake (where I had previously dug a deliberate hole around twenty feet deeper than the lake bottom!
