  1. I did walk half our little beach Brenton .But with bait fishers in a couple of spots and a middle aged woman going for a swim it was still unproductive.when I saw that I decided to try casting on the other side of the lake .And when about 15 people(the normal crowd of bream fishers had left) all set up at the Bower Rd outlet I thought time to go .while more and more families arrived in the car park :fishing:My 2 hits today and one yesterday were at that other beach where we caught ST's at . .I was really shocked when that small bream hit the fly on the surface .I really thought they were feedi
  2. Well what can I say its been awhile since I posted .Went for another flick this AM at West Lakes.Last night I made a barbie pink headed rubber band fly,to replace one I lost Saturday to a snag(and crappy line I was using) .But I used wider rubber bands resulting in a fly with an Extra large head. And I decided to leave my long rod at home and use my old short rod(I know why I bought a new rod) !!First cast I thought its not sinking .Second cast I will change this baby.Wham bam fish attack sadly it was so quick I missed it .Few more casts in that spot and I worked out this fly was actually a sem
  3. 1fish I only fish West lakes and use a 6weight .You should be ok with the 8/9 wt .Not sure what Barra style flies are but if the Salmon and mullies are feeding they will take just about anything .and have hooked both on the same style of fliesI probably fish wrong but I look for bait schools breaking the surface .Thats when the Salmon or mullies are feeding .Cheers
  4. To get back on the board re catching fish this year.Been too long between drinks for my liking .To get one of those mulloway that broke me off last year.More of u guys to go fly fishing
  5. I really only fish the lake Ben .
  6. are u talking to Bigfish Benny ?
  7. Yep agree with ya benny I get my best results at that beach when no one else is around.annoying as i was following taht school and had to stop :thumb:
  8. bigfish if u go through the chat box I have mentioned the beach not far from bowers rd .
  9. Benny there were bait fish hanging around that spot that has your name on it.I had trouble getting to them due to the baitfishers but u may have better luck.Bait fish = mullies or Salmon.
  10. Once upon a time I was just a bait fisherman .used to take a seat and just sit and catch a few fish. Then one day a European wasp came out and stung me .A week latter in the same spot the swarm came after me.Thats when I discovered fly fishing And thats Salt Water fly fishing And just for Dabilda thats the way they fish in heaven :icon_lol: :icon_lol:Species so far Salmon TroutBream Mulloway hooked and lost either bust offs or spits .And when I see bait guys or gals sitting there waiting for the fish I now think gee that looks boring.cheershave a good one guys .
  11. We all have days like that one of my joining knots gave way while I was wading today.lucky for me I was holding fly line and mono.Went back to land to retie it and sliced through my thumb.so I fished for another two hours with blood coming out of my thumb :)Lucky us fly guys are tough (and clumsy)
  12. Thanks for the pointer! I had it suggested to me that I can get an outfit from $100, but someone else suggested I set aside around $400 to get something of quality ($150 rod, $150 reel, $100 line).Well thats the quandry do u spend $400 on something u may not like or go cheaper. My pflueger rod cost $175this reel cost $35Line cost $19.95 delievered from ebay.My first entire outfit cost $59 plus backing.the irish reel I broke the foot off of cost my parents $450 bucks .I was quoted $120 bucks on sinking line that dropped to $65 when I wavered .but got the $19.95 off ebay.Buy what u can afford and
  13. Point noted and committed to memory! Oh please NOOOOO! We have more than enough hello kitty gear as it is, thanks to my 35 year old wife, including the hello kitty phone on the bedside table which lights up when it rings! :icon_eek:stephanie has the mobile phone that lights up when it rings .And the best thing to do about your reel .Buy the best u can afford. I am kind of like a cross between Rambo/german storm trooper when I'm in the water .so the stronger the better or the cheaper to replace the better .
  14. It feels very nice and the line comes off great.I just need to get used to the noise of the drag .as my wife said for the price its better to use than a $400 reel if it does die its not a strain on the bank .
  15. I would have thought that you would buy a 7/8 weight reel to go on the same weight Rod .I have heard of doing what you say.In fact this reel says 4/6 weight and comes of really good on the 6 weight rod .Like the Irish reel did it was a 5/6 on a 6wieght.This reel feels light like plastic but its metal .I hope its going to last me many years(I have washed it under the tap and then in more water now drip drying) but it was a cheap buy.Perhaps you have better luck with gear than me .the Irish reel was is aluminium saw one like that in the shop yesterday.Whatever REEL you buy get one with a large
  16. I wish I could say it handled the large fish well .Except this session once again no fish.BUT it was like having my old Irish reel back it felt great on the rod and I was casting better again.
  17. Seeing I'm not the type to run out and buy anything on the spur of a moment. And was thinking of changing from my first reel after I broke my other reel, when I had that run in with that other fisherman last week. When I got home from my session this morning I got to thinking that my rod in fact may be an 8 weight .So with my fly rod I decided to head to a tackle shop.Found on the rod where it said 6 weight and they didn't have many reels in stock .But they did have this graphite (wont rust  )Okuma reel and the price was right for me.And talking with the chap it is large arbour like my Iris

    Mulloway

Tonka is the man IMHO for mulloway on the fly ;)Funny you should say that Brennton. I had them coming to the surface more than once last year and taking one of my Green bait fish flies.I was watching while the fly was trying to sink wham bam .A bit of a rush but I had a fair few spits after about 5 seconds.

    Mulloway

So after last weekends accidental Mulloway take and spit .and my bust offs last easter at the lake.I thought I'd ask the fly guru's on here .whats the go with mulloway on a fly .do you u strip the fly fast or slow ?I wont ask about flies as my rubber band ones seem to work ::)just the rest of my technique re playing and landing :fishing:And with all the talk about SP's and HB's catching them I am sure one of us fly guys could get one .cheers
  20. Ahhhh! So NOW I'm learning! I actually went into a tacklestore for a look the other day, and quickly realised that I didn't even know what I was looking at, so mebbe I need to have a bit of a chat with a fly guru BEFORE I consider buying an outfit!TonyB I am humbled and unworthy oh exalted one, yet anxious to snatcheth yon pebble from thine grasp!MickeyJ Methinks it may be wisest to begin on the light fresh gear then, which has now solved another issue, the choice of outfit "fresh or salt".You could get a cheap combo like I did and have a muck around at the lake
  21. according to Jason kennedy on fishntrip it goes soapy then schoolie then full grown Sambo man .Forgot the sizes he mentioned but hey it doesnt matter. And the one on the 26th was smaller than the last one that broke me off back around easter. It really was my own fault I was mucking around with the fly watching the tiny Bream chase it when bam out of the weed came the Muilloway very tiny but still a mulloway .And I still have much to learn .Geez now i sound like Ranger:)
  22. Most fly lines tend to be very soft and heavy they are also bloody expensive hence the reels have to be made of highly polished materials so as not to abrade or nick the soft line material. The reels also have to have a very hard surface so as not to scratch or abrade easily, also they have to be light weight because the thickness of the line means bigger, wider spools than those used for mono. Suitable alloys such as Duralumin are expensive and difficult to work. So an old Alvey or Steelite Blackfish reel just won't do! There is also the snob (W***er) attitude that some people have. I have ar
  23. You bring a tear of pure joy to an old farts eye with the depth of yourhumour MASTER :icon_e_biggrin:And I'd be delighted to start you on a potentially Nirvanic journey into the deepest mysteries of the Fly Fishers craft ;)Cheers,Tony.when you have gained insight from the red master Tony. Then thouist can hunt the bait fish schools looking for Salmon and Mulloway with the unworthy Saltie me.And you can learn the ways of the Lone SWFF.Any time Ranger or Tony you are both welcome at my lake umm I mean West Lakes.:fishing:to have a friendly flick. But be aware young Ranger what is considered hea
  24. I am not even going to post a new topic for today's report.Went to the other side of the Lake and fished there. What a waste of time to say I got follows from Tiddlers is being over kind on the fish .Oh well always tomorrow
