  1. G'day guys... Just wondering if anyone knows of any rod blanks on the market these days that even come close to a pacific composite or sabre blank?? Any suggestions?Cheers
  2. cheers mate, that probably is the case, I have not heard of it being done before
  3. Ok so I know how you can get butt's on a rod extended/shortened, but can you get the tip section extended to make a rod lighter tipped?I have a rod that's an absolute brute, but I wouldn't mind it having a softer tip to detect bites easier, is it possible to modify it like this?
  4. That bloke filleting is amazing to watch! very skilled!
  5. Thanks Tacklebags, just making sure I can drive that far up the beach if need be this weekend
  6. Cheers Southie, you wouldn't happen to have the link?
  7. G'day people, Just wondering what the dates are that anywhere north of tea tree is off limits due to the migration of the birds?I cant put my finger on it but I know its around this time of year.... can anyone help me?Cheers.
  8. My understanding is that backing is used 1) to fill the rest of the spool when there isn't enough braid to fill it and 2) to stop slippage of braid on the spool under heavy load, but if its only for bream/salmon trout/ whiting etc. then it probably wont slip regardless, if I want to completely fill a spool for say snapper/kings/ tuna, ill use a strip of tape around it so the braid has something to grip under a heavy load. Otherwise backing is used when a spool cant be fully filled with braid. Now days reels are coming out with a rubber type strip around the base of the spool so there is no need
  9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGnPlptoSEwThese look nice!
  10. OK thanks guys, will definently give the braid a go! running 50lb, thanks again
  11. Thanks for the reply mate, it will be around salt creek/ Goolwa beach mainly so pretty open water! how long do you make your leader?
  12. The reason I write this is because I've noticed many of the new reels are built to hold braid, not so much mono anymore, and that's probably they way its going to keep heading in future
  13. After peoples thoughts on braid vs monofilament for surf fishing with baits, currently using mono, got no complaints but considering giving braid a go, because I love the sensitivity it has. cheers
  14. They seem to do the trick! Cheers mate, tasted great
  15. Had a quick flick for squid at moonta jetty for 45 minutes, managed to get 6, pretty chuffed with that for only trying out a new jig, very impressed, great weather too
  16. g'day Knackers!I have a Shimano Terez, rated at 15-30lb, very impressed, tough as nails... ive used it for big snapper up to 27lb, cant fault it and have never questioned its power, very very strong and reliable rodA mate of mine has one also and uses it for casting metals from the boat at pelagics out near the Montegue islands (not sure on spelling) in WA and he reckons it casts a mile too!I picked it up for $220.00 a year ago, not sure on prices these days, cheers.
  17. Good news!!! a legal Mulloway on your first trip is a great starting point! some people go years down there before they get one sounds you had a ball, good on ya!
  18. Cheers for that Cal! the taper on them looks great! cant wait to load it up on a big fish!
  19. Went down the local tackle store today to have a play with a few surf rods to invest in, went down there thinking of getting an fsu5120 or mt8144.... saw a sabre sitting in the corner with a bit of dust on it, listed at $400 bucks, I only wanted to have a look at that price to see if the fsu5120 felt similarHad a chat to the owner of the shop about doing a bit of a deal.... got it for $200!! absolutely stoked, cant wait to use it!Was this a good price? I know these are sought after rods! they look top quality!
  20. Just on the topic, does anybody think an SA based fishing show could be a prospect? (like fishing WA) or would it run out of places to go/fish too quick?Maybe a fishing/camping one might be the go? I just thought it'd be cool to see a show, knowing what they are catching is in our own state.
  21. Plenty of gummies around! You'd be trying pretty hard not to get one
  22. Give them a crack mate! I started using Konan circle hooks, and was pleasantly surprised, they do the job perfect on big snapper (8/0), I imagine the mustards would be better quality so give them a go
  23. your on the right track mate, its hard to predict when the mulloway will be near your bait though, plenty of people on here have caught them on a slack tide or dodge, just gotta be in it to win it! hope to see a pic of a big mully after your trip!
  24. yeah, ive lost a few fish using 6/0 hooks, now I just go big with hook size and don't have too many troubles, I do the same with snapper in the boat too. and cant really remember, the adrenaline was going haha, I backed the drag off a bit when it got close in and didn't have a gaff so after all the stuffing around probably 10 minutes, caught it half hour after the peak of the low tide
  25. This one took a fresh (human consumption grade) Pillie, but ive also got them on fresh mullet fillets and freshly caught salmon fillets too, I guess the bottom line is try to use as fresh as possible baits however I do always bring a bag of old bait as back up if need be, otherwise it becomes berley, hope this helps!Don't be scared to use a pair of 9/0 or 10/0 hooks buddy! this way if you do hook that big one you are a less risk of losing it mid-fight. Even soapies fit their gob over them hooks too :f
