Cuts to recreational razorfish catch limits

Recommended Posts

In response to concerns regarding the overfishing of razorfish stocks in some regions of the State, PIRSA Fisheries have reduced the recreational daily bag and boat limits that apply to this species. From 1 December 2007, the daily bag limit for razorfish will be 25 per person and the daily boat limit (where three or more people are fishing from the boat) will be 75.PIRSA Fisheries Executive Director Mr Will Zacharin said there had been consensus among local councils, community groups, as well as recreational and commercial fishers that management action needed to be taken in regard to razorfish.?A reduction in the recreational catch is the most effective measure to protect against overfishing of razorfish beds,? Mr Zacharin said.?The 50% reduction in daily recreational bag and boat limits is seen as a significant step in ensuring the sustainability of razorfish stocks, whilst still maintaining fair and reasonable access to the resource.?Updated signposting, advising fishers of the new regulations, will be rolled out at key locations over the coming weeks. The changes will also be reflected in a re-print of the recreational fishing guide and the PIRSA Fisheries web site www.pir.sa.gov.au/fishing.
