  1. hey all,Fished the onk the other morning and it seems the bream are on the chew again, yay! Another thing i did notice was that the little ones are back, squillions in the 3-5 inch range.I remember them being in the system much earlier in the year last year, around late sept early november and i started to wonder whether the flush out from mt bold may have delayed or affected the breeding season? What ya think? If so could this be taken into account when the ban in old noarlunga is lifted?Dont wanna be a party pooper but i want to fish the river for many years to come, and continue to catch fish.always Keen

  2. hey guysi have been for about 6 months now, trying to be as detailed as possible and am hoping it pays off when i grow up( if i do :P )was wondering if anyone knew of any weather archives as i have been taking pics for a long time and was hoping to do a heap of backdating and expand it based on the past sessions. hoping to get hold of synoptic chart archivescheerskeen

  3. completely agree with what ya's are saying about the drum lines and shark nets. i'd be willing to sacrifice a dozen humans a year to see the back of such so called 'protection' measures and as mentioned the efficiency of these measures is questionable.on another note, does the bitten shark pic look a bit dodgy, even photoshoppy, to anyone else?always Keen

  6. hey alllike the majority of those of us on this site, I understand our fishing needs to be sustainable if we are to fish for the long term and those who know me know that I am passionate about fishing with preservation in mind. i am as shocked as the rest of you and by no means are advocating these sneaky underhanded changes but this topic has raised a few questions in my own mind tho and i shall endeavor to put them to you.did they have a dollar figure in mind when they introduced the licenses in the first place, have fallen short of that target and need to skim more to cover their losses?why are the laws they put in place, size and bag limits, not protecting stocks as the said laws are supposed to do? is it because the laws are being ignored/not enforced adequately or is it because the rec fishing population has grown to where the said laws are rendered insufficient?being a realist i also found myself asking the question "could this possibly be the best/most efficient strategy to ensuring fish stocks are protected?" as unfortunate as it is for the 'average joe/jill' fisho.i also cant begin to comprehend the impact on tourism boating and tackle stores, bait suppliers.....the list goes on. so is some of the money raised going to be used to prop up these industries at risk, i think not!as i said i do not agree with what is going down over there and as someone said, the other states are gonna be watching this and rubbing their grubby little politician hands together going mmmmmmmm money money money unfortunately i NEED to fish so no matter how much i disagree i will just bend over and let them pluck it from me if they do it here but that leaves less bucks to spend at anglers choice.if ya got this far, thanks for reading and any feedback on the questions i have been asking myself will be greatly appreciated.always Keen

  7. I don't care what it costs me but the next pair of waders i buy will keep me dry and warm no matter what as well as last a minimum 4 salmon seasons. i was sold a 70 dollar pair of shakespeare waders barely 6 months ago and i am less than impressed at the fact they no longer keep me dry. they have de-laminated around the top of the boot, knees and crotch. ya also have to wear something under them to stop the top of the boot wearing a hole in your calves.Do 'neoprene'(wetsuit type) waders keep you dry? and can you get them with a solid? boot coz i did like the boot and sole of the cheapies.i think if ya just using them to flick around in fresh water they may suit your needs but if ya want something to cope with a bit of rough and tumble you may need to spend more than 70 bucksalways Keen

  8. hey there Pete,I too am a novice to the sport of light gear bream fishing and also came from a surf fishing background.i am completely addicted. i fish at least twice a week in the onkaparinga river and have been doing quite well(scored a pb of 38.5cm two weeks ago).september last year i purchased a couple of hardbodies on a whim, got a few medium bream, was happy, about two weeks later i did battle with a 60cm mully and have been unable to concentrate without a rod in my hand ever since. this was with a $30 jarvis walker combo, 6lb mono, not even a leader, so please i am/was the ultimate novice :Di am still using the jw rod, have a $50 shimano reel, tho i now use braid and a leader and am blown away by the soft plastics ability to get good catches. i have really cranked it up since about december and have many many good fish to my name from the onk(a dozen mullies in the 60 - 70cm range and countless bream in the 'horse' range). all on what many would class as budget/inferior gear.i think the moral of this post is that if your heart and mind are in the right place and you put in the hours and effort you shall be rewarded (positive that Ranger can say it better). sometimes good gear or not, apparently it is not what you have got it is the way you use it lodue to financial restrictions i will have to wait til tax time before i can upgrade my gear then free from ambarassment i can hold up my hand to the likes of ranger, lazylure and tonyb and say i am here to learn anything you are willing to teach me. i am hoping to get very involved with the scenei have set myself a goal to be a competent competition fisho within 10 years, like it to be quicker but i am a realist, very patient and very very keenon another note, i am taking the light gear for a spin down waitpinga(my old home ground) this weekend to apply some of what i have learned in the last few months on the awesomeness that is sambo fishing, should be quite a thrill.if ya ever wanna fish the onk and want a partner, me and my bro are there every weekend, feel free to pm me and we can go for a flickalways Keen

  9. you guys on this site are awesomesome fantastic tips that will definately get tried within the week, also food for thought too!have wanted to try the poppers for a while now but not had the opportunity until this weekendand i am gonna do some serious experimentingi also have a feeling that using plasties on a bottom rig may cut out some of the frustration caused by crabs too, one can hope anyway ;Dcheers heaps for the replies and may good fishing come your wayalways Keen

  10. hi guys,i am loving fishin with SP's at the moment and with winter approaching i am very keen to try for some sambos with the light gear and SP's.i fish waitpinga regularly with both baits and shineys but have never tried plastics.the main issue i foresee is that at waits the wind is usually in your face hence casting distance may/will be a problem.any hints on plastic types or sizes as well as jighead info will be tried and greatly appreciated.always Keen

  11. spare of the moment early mornin session on saturday saw me pull in this 38.5cm personal best bream from the onk on sp's(got better elsewhere but best from onk) within 20 mins of first cast. me and my bro hit the onk that night and got some very nice fish also, will post pics when i get them. will get the magical 40 out of the onk this winter!always Keen (and very happy too) size=500http://www.fishyorkepeninsula.com/images/attachments/7GABuDkH__resized_500.jpg[/img]

  12. My fishin hat, a camo sloppy joe type thing, only ever gets washed in the ocean, usually about 3 or 4 times a year. And only in the clean southern waters to not the yucky metro waters, last time i did it at west beach it smelled worse than it did before. never again! always Keen

  13. coz if i think there may be a fish in it i will throw i line in it! i have gone without food, sleep, sex and work to go fishing. i have frequently walked for 3 hours to get to that secret spot. i dream of fishing. i cant sleep for three nights before a trip (and i really cant sleep, 1-2 hours tops which can be dangerous). when all my fellow fishos have gone home i remain going 'just 1 more cast, just one more cast. i am only just getting a foot in the scene but i have not yet meet anyone as keen as i am!

  14. Correct me if I am wrong but i think i saw you there, jared road car park, sunday morning, 8.30ish and you were just packin up and a little red car stopped for a quick hello?the young lad I saw was absolutely over the moon with where he was and what he had caught, a very happy chappy indeed.A big kudos to you for spending your time to give what all boys need.

  15. AS a kid i remember my dad and I climbing down to the southern side of gull rock(end of maslins). In a little bay there he used to get some good catches of flatties as well as some huge sweep. come to think of it I might give that spot a crack, if ya can still get there unlike pelican point

  16. I did lose a rod in a local lake once, there one second, a patch of bubbles in the water the next. Was a crappy rod but it was my brothers so had to try something. Snapped on a sinker and 4/0 hook and started casting, 10 mins later had the line, 2 mins later had the rod in my hand and in another 5 had the 12 lb carp that decided the rod needed a wash!

  17. Hi all,The Onka is a fragile environment with an enormous amount of pressure, both environmental as well as fishing pressure, being placed upon it. I have been fishing it with lures consistently for the last 4-5 months and have been having a blast catching mullies and bream and meeting some great fellow fishos on my travels, not to mention it can be an extremely beautiful and serene place to be.One thing has been bugging me for the last two months and that is cigarette butts(and yes I smoke). I understand that they are tiny and insignificant looking but the river and its banks are NOT the place to be leaving them. On several occasions I have witnessed the blatant disposal, by apparently reasonably intelligent people, of butts(ciggie) into the river environ when it is easy to avoid this potentially damaging behavior. This gripe is by no means limited to the Onka river as it is plague that infects almost all our favorite fishing spots and I am sure all the non-smokers shake their heads in disgust when they see butts(ciggie) at their spots.I implore you all to have a heart for our fish, our environment as well as our future generations of fishos, to do what you need to do to not play a part in ruining the best damn recreation/sport on earth. i assure you that it is not hard to do the right thing and take ALL your rubbish with you.I AM a smoker and I carry an old tin or film canister to take them with me and if that fails I just put them in my pocket (no matter how much the missus threatens to stop washing my clothes coz they sometimes end up in the washing machine , I will not just throw them). This post may get me labeled a nitpicking whinger because "it's only a ciggie butt mate" as I have heard a few times when I protest, but I care not. What I do care about is taking my grandkids (my daughters are only 11 and 13 so a while off yet I hope) down to the water and getting a fish on their line. For that to happen we all need to do what we can to look after our fisheries and the environment as a whole. If ya got this far, thank for reading.Always Keen
