  2. Hi All,Just had this sent through by Spotter @ Wallaroo

G’day AllI have just received a fax outlining the new closure for Murray Cod in SAThe SA Government in their infinite wisdom have just continued the closedseason for Murray cod fishing until 31/12/09, yes that’s correct, until theend of December 2009.Their reasons are that due to the drought and MURRAY COD ARE DEPENDEANT ONFLOWS FOR BREEDING a yearlong closer will come into place. Taking intoaccount that the season has already been closed for 5 months that will be a17 month closure, and I will bet my last dollar that it will stay in placefor many a year to come. The fax I received states that Murray cod are dependent on flows to breed, the advice I was just given by NSW fisheries is that is not correct, whichexplains why cod are breed in farm dams for stocking. The Minister for everything plus fisheries in SA has in my humble opinionlost the plot or has been very much influenced by those wanting fishingbanned. The consequences will be far reaching, the tackle shop in SA that is relianton the anglers for his survival will now be looking at putting of staff, notto mention all the people along the river that depend on the anglers fromall over Australia that come and stay, shop, sleep and spend $ in the smalltowns along the river, and yes to catch and in almost all cases release thecod caught. All this decision will do is force a lot of businesses to the brink and formany anglers to break the law to fish, as who is going to determine if youare fishing for cod or callop (yellow Belly). Many, many, cod are taken oncallop sized lures and many, callop are taken on cod lures.Who will be the judge on which lure is for what.I believe this decision is ill-informed and made with no crediblescientific evidence to justify a closure of this nature.A very simple solution would have been to ban the TAKING of ALL MURRAY CODfor one year, and considering that cod will only breed during their breedingcycle why close or stop fishing for Murray Cod for the whole year. WHAT WILLIT ACHEIVE????????????????????????????????????For more information www.pir.sa.gov.au/fishing

  3. Rapid Bay's new $4million jetty won’t be completed before Christmas. However, construction is well underway with pylon works and two-thirds of the jetty decking completed.Unusually windy weather and rough seas in October caused delays, preventing the progress of protective coating and pylon works. But with this milestone now completed, project manager Ben Hogarth said locals could expect the jetty to be finished early next year, depending on the weather.Sea spray and rain could make welding difficult, so calm seas are essential when placing the concrete sleepers that form the deck into place.Anthony King, a member of the Scuba Divers Federation of SA (SDFSA) and the Friends of the Rapid Bay Jetty, is disappointed the jetty would not be finished by Christmas but pleased with its progress."We would have loved to see is ready for Christmas, but we understand it's one of those things that is out of the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure's (DTEI) hands."The nature of the project means it is dependent on the weather…but we are very pleased to see it going ahead."The DTEI is reminding swimmers, fishers and divers that the area around both the old and new jetties is closed to ensure public safety during construction."Right now the Rapid Bay jetty is a construction site," acting project director Ian Llewellyn said."For their own safety, I urge marine enthusiasts to exercise caution and patience until the new facility is opened."Rated as one of the country's top fishing and diving spots, access to most of the existing jetty was closed in December 2004 after it fell into disrepair from storm damage.Plans to build a new $3.9 million structure were announced in September 2006, after the local community rallied for the future of the old jetty.Mr Hogarth said hopes to complete the new jetty by January 21 were realistic, but will again be dependent on the weather.

  4. The state government has taken a step towards flooding the Lower Lakes with seawater by applying for approval from the Federal Government. The Minister for the River Murray Karlene Maywald said that this is a requirement of the $10 million management strategy to avoid the lakes becoming acidified and is "a last resort"."I stress that this is not a decision to let seawater into the Lower Lakes but is part of the preparations required in case drought continues … and action is required to prevent widespread acidification in the region," she said. However even this initial step to seawater inflow has angered many people including the Alexandrina Council who will write to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd asking him to intervene and reject the application. The council’s chief executive officer, John Coombe, said seawater would unleash an environmental disaster in the lakes."We do not know what seawater will do to this freshwater environment," he said."With this decision the state government signals it will walk away from our freshwater lakes".Ms Maywald said the strategy has outlined triggers for alkalinity and water levels at the Lower Lakes, which will determine if action needs to occur. The trigger is calcium carbonate at levels of 25 milligrams per litre or if water levels reach 1.5 metres below sea level in Lake Alexandrina or 0.5 metres below sea level in Lake Albert."If these triggers are likely to be reached and if there is not enough freshwater inflows to maintain the Lower Lakes, as a last resort, a minimum quantity of seawater would need to be introduced through the barrages to manage the risk and avoid acidification," she said.Member for Hammond, Adrian Pederick, also believes that seawater is not the answer and that maintaining the lakes with freshwater above acidification levels is critical to the survival of the whole system, not just the lakes."What is needed is a strategy to secure water to avert an ecological disaster. What we have is a plan to monitor its deterioration up to a point where seawater has to be let in, this in itself threatens the long term survival of the lakes," he said.

  5. RAPID BAY - Rapid Bay's long awaited new $3.9 million jetty is emerging from the waters of Gulf St Vincent.About one-third of the pylon works are now complete, with construction expected to be finished by the end of the year. The project director, Rob Jenkins, said the jetty's completion date would depend on the weather."We've made terrific progress to date but do need the weather to do the right thing as we move toward construction of the deeper water section."This is complex work and it is difficult enough without the rough weather that can impact this part of South Australia,” he said."Hopefully we get calm conditions and everything is finished by the end of the year."Based on progress to date, Mr Jenkins estimates that, either way, the jetty should be completed then or thereabouts.Rated as one of the country's top fishing and diving spots, access to most of the damaged existing jetty was closed in December 2004.The Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI) announced plans to build a new structure in September 2006, after the local community rallied for the jetty's future. The new 240-metre long jetty will feature solar lighting as well as stairs and platforms for divers, who are attracted to the spot for the rich diversity of marine life supported by the old jetty, including the rare Leafy SeadragonGlenice Galbraith of the Friends of Rapid Bay Jetty said the completion of the jetty by Christmas would be an extra bonus for the district."I can't imagine the scope the jetty could create," she said."I hope it will create extra jobs because that's what this has all been about, but we will all have something to enjoy too."It has been slowly but surely coming along…I've been getting more and more excited as each pylon goes up."Between now and the end of the year, work will continue on assembling pylons and crossheads onshore before they are lifted by crane and hammered into place using a 12 tonne piling hammer. In the meantime, the State Government is reminding fishers and divers that the existing jetty is closed.
