As the October long weekend approaches, PIRSA Fisheries and Aquaculture is reminding recreational fishers to keep abreast of the fishing rules, regulations and closures.

Peter Dietman, Director of Operations said keeping up to date with recreational fishing rules and regulations is now easy thanks to the free SA Recreational Fishing Guide smartphone app.

“The Labour Day weekend is a popular time for recreation fishing as people take advantage of the long weekend occurring during a school holiday period,” he said. “While we want everyone to enjoy their fishing, we also want people to be fully informed about what is happening and their responsibilities. Everyone who goes fishing can play their part in ensuring there are plenty of fish for everyone to share into the future.

“Essentially this app provides a one-stop shop for fishers to access information on the rules of fishing in SA.”

Available on smartphone and tablet devices the app allows fishers to look up rules, regulations and closures, along with ability to report suspicious or illegal fishing activity to Fishwatch.

Mr Dietman said that the app enables PIRSA to send out direct alerts to subscribers, making it easier to advise on rule changes or timely reminders such as seasonal closures or openings.

In addition, PIRSA’s Fishcare volunteers will also be out and about over the weekend helping fishers keep up to date on recreational fishing rules and regulations.

Not only will they be patrolling at some of our most popular fishing destinations but will also be on hand to answer questions at the local agricultural shows at Yankalilla, Kingston and Strathalbyn along with the Waikerie, Kingston and Barmera markets. On 12 October they will also be on hand at open days at both Marina Adelaide and Cape Jaffa Marina.
