As rods, lures and hooks are dusted off for some holiday fishing, recreational anglers are reminded about the various information sources available to help them make the most of South Australia's rewarding fishing opportunities.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Leon Bignell said downloading the SA Recreational Fishing Guide smartphone app was one of the best ways fishers can stay informed about fishing rules and regulations.

"South Australia is home to some of Australia’s best fishing experiences, and the State Government has a range of measures in place to secure the sustainability of our fish stocks,” Mr Bignell said.

“The app is a one-stop-shop for information on local fishing rules.

“Free to download, fishers can search fishing limits, closure rules and gear restrictions and also have the ability to report suspicious or illegal fishing activity, as well as shark sightings.”

“The app also has a mapping feature including all marine park sanctuary zones as well as existing fishing closures. On opening the mapping feature, users will be alerted when they are within a closed area.”

Recreational fishers will also benefit from the presence of Fishcare Volunteers who play a vital role in educating fishers on local rules and regulations.

“The FISHCARE Volunteer program has more than 90 volunteers around the state who give their time during the busy holiday period to visit popular fishing spots and answer fishers' queries,” Mr Bignell said.

"Keep an eye out for our dedicated volunteers who will be on hand at a range of locations and events across the summer providing fisheries information and assistance."

Mr Bignell urged all fishers to play their part in supporting the health of our fisheries.

“We have some of the best-managed fisheries in the world, and with everybody doing the right thing we can ensure today's rewarding fishing opportunities remain for future generations.”

Information of fishing rules and regulations is also available on the 24 hour Fishwatch number 1800 065 522 or at www.pir.sa.gov.au/fisheries
