The Glow Float.

Recommended Posts

The Glow float by Smart InventionsI was shown the Glow Float when I was in Anglers choice this week,.I was asked if I go squiding, which I like to do from time to time, and with the warm weather coming up I thought I would give it a go.Now I must point out that I paid for this float out of my own pocket, and am writing this review as I find it, it was not given to me so as to write a positive review ect, but I will tell it how it is.My first impressions where “it’s expensive for a float, but then this doesn’t look like any normal float.”(Now I would like to put the price in at this point but as we are not allowed to post prices I will put a price range, I hope thats OK if not im sure I will hear about it) ;)The price range for this float was between the $13-$19 mark. The float is made from a hard clear plastic which is fluro green. It has a two part body that screws apart, and has an O-ring seal on the top section to keep the water out.The plastic is hard and would not stand up to having things dropped on it or being stood on ect. If you did I think you could kiss it goodbye. So some care will be needed in the tackle box.Inside of the float there is a small part that houses a single blue LED light and 3 small button cell batteries. The light and battery housing at first glance look like they are metal but on inspection I noticed they are chromed plastic. My thoughts are that this plastic body is probably a better option than a metal one due to the environment in which it will be used, but testing will tell. The light housing has a twist body that connects the batteries. When you first twist the housing the LED flashes about 2.5 times a second continuously, twist the body a little more and the light will become a constant glow. Like most LED’s this one is bright to look at. I noticed that when turning off you must make sure that the housing is untwisted enough or the light flashes as you move it around, so in a tackle box you might find the batteries flat when you go to use it.The inside of the float has some plastic moulded so as to hold the light housing in place when screwed together, but I was told it directs light beams into the water to attract the squid, So it may well have a duel function. On the outside of the float there is a little beacon on top I’m not sure what it’s meant to do. The bottom has a connection point for line or swivel. I’m not too sure about how strong the plastic tab is and can’t help but wonder if it would stand up to a big cast when trying to get some distance when putting your bait out. I tested this float in the kitchen sink first up to see if the seal was indeed water tight. At first it floated on its side but I attached a sinker and it then sat as you would expect.I left the float in the sink with the o-ring under the water line for about half an hour or so, when I pulled it out there was no water inside the float. A good start.I then took some pics of the unit in the dark, it looks a lot brighter when the lights are off and should be easy to see when out in the water.Pic 1 in my big mitPic 2 on the table with the lights outPic 3 pulled apartPic 4 in the sink, note the light shining down to the bottom of the sinkto be continued... size=800http://www.fishyorkepeninsula.com/images/attachments/OtL3WVsF__DSC_1743_800x600.JPG[/img] size=800http://www.fishyorkepeninsula.com/images/attachments/NeCTytw0__DSC_1747_800x600.JPG[/img] size=800http://www.fishyorkepeninsula.com/images/attachments/ngAoV6P3__DSC_1765_800x600.JPG[/img] size=800http://www.fishyorkepeninsula.com/images/attachments/WyviU5co__DSC_1776_800x600.JPG[/img]
