This article was in todays local paper from Victor Harbor.Thought I might share it with you all!

Work begins on new jetty RAPID BAY - Work on the new $3.9 million Rapid Bay jetty has begun.According to the Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI), sonic testing work, to create a six metre-deep profile of the seabed, began on Tuesday. This work involves dragging a small sled over the seabed and foreshore, sending out ultra sonic pulses, and seismic microphones will record the reflected sound. The profile will show how deep and dense the layers of sand and rock are.The DTEI expects this stage to be completed by the weekend, and work should not prevent divers or anglers from using the area.Test holes will be drilled on the foreshore to find the best places to undertake test piling, which is hammering piles into the seabed to check the proposed construction techniques will work at the site. The test piling is expected to begin on October 5, and take about five days.According to the DTEI, the piling process will be carried out in accordance with an environmental management plan, to minimise the impact on the environment and protect marine wildlife. This investigation work will be used to finalise the jetty's design.Any amendments to the design will be presented to the jetty steering group prior to construction work beginning. The new jetty will replace the current one, which was declared structurally unsound and closed off to the public in late 2004.A target for the new jetty's completion has been set for mid-2008.
