  1. I agree that it may seem like less fish activity during winter, however I dont believe it is actually the case that fish are significantly less active. Most fish have an optimum temperature range and it is within this range that a particular species requirements regarding disolved levels of Oxygen, temperature for metabolism and a sufficient food supply are met.Given that most (all) Saltwater species are native, they have evolved to live in our environment and are therefore unlikely to ever actually switch off (like imported stocked fish can when conditions arent' right). Generations of breeding pressures have ensured that only those fish which feed most effectively (and therefore continously) have been able to pass on their genes! So if the temperature is not merely like a switch, (on/off) how can this apparent winter migration or behavioural changes be accounted for?I believe it is all about balance; a combination of actions on the part of the fish to best survive in its environment, and to stay on topic, these are all in one way or another linked to TEMPERTURE. I'll go in order of importance (imho)-Dissolved Oxygen -Cold water is more dense (concentrated) thus a volume of colder water can hold more oxygen than the same volume of warmer water (where the molecules are further apart). Pelagic species generally require high levels of dissolved oxygen (DO) (free oxygen) and that is why they never stop swimming (water continually over gills), this may be why Salmon appear more agressive/ prevalent in cold water. Being a slower fish, generally restricted to short bursts of energy, Bream have a wide range of acceptable DO and can thefore tolerate warmer water. The reason i rank this at the top, is if the mimimum DO is not available , the affected species will have to Seek out a new enviromnent, or stop feeding and eventually die. Often it is the baitfish which are first affected- Temperature for Metabolism-The curculatory system of different species opperates best in a certain temperature range. Humans for example are fine in Temps of 20-45 degrees C. if its colder we need clothes, if its hotter we need cooling. FISH HAVE NO SUCH LUXURY! When temps become too hot or too cold for their blood to supply energy to their body, fish either need to find warmer or colder water in order to feel hungry, to in turn feed and to therefore survive. -In summer increasingly warm days, heat up the surface of the water, the cooler more dense water sinks to the bottom and the hot water rises, forming a layer of warm water stacked on top. It is here that the mojority of baitfish and prawns will congregate, this Brings fish like Bream, Gar, Whiting and Mackeral into the shallows and up to the surface layers, where TEMPERATURE is optimum for FOOD SOURCES and METABOLIC RATES.- As winter approaches, the days get shorter and cooler, wind mixes cool air with the water and the suface chills rapidly. Being more dense the cool water traps the warm water below; creating the opposite situation to summer. Now the bait, food and Fish are down deep! And thats why it seems like there are not so many around, it is largely because they are not in the shallows or near the surface! Fishing can slow down, but my best fishing in Westlakes has been in winter, fishing down deep for Bream and when i say best i mean both for Size and Numbers of fish.-Follow The Leader-Small fish and Organisms are always going to be the most affected by the environment; Temperature, light, Tide, and Moon. As these little fellas are the food source for other fish, Bigger Species will often follow or congregate around them for an easy feed. So consider that it may not be the big boys calling the shots as to where in the water column is the best place to be!Well there is some food for thought! What do you fellas think?

  2. A teaser line is a baited line without hooks or barbs of any kind, normally used to attract squid. A person must remain within 50 metres of that line at all times when used from a jetty, pier, wharf or breakwater.

I dont doubt thats how it was interpreted Spotter, however i cant agree with the interpretation!Surely the only 'hook' is in the name "gill hook" ! If it was called "gill holder" would it be okay (with fisheries)?I think that because the hook is not designed (or able) to catch fish or squid it should be okay and thus considered a Teaser!oh well.... what do u all think???
  3. Shaun is not going to be impressed that his thread is hijacked but.......UTaker....I prefer the idea of entering the next world with my options open, I'll decide what trebbles i need when i get there! :icon_e_wink:besides i've not got much to leave behind if i take my lures with me!

    BLOOD WORM RUN 2008

Looking for an effective alternative to expensive and increasingly rare cockles?Always wanted to secure your own fresh bait but havent known the Where, When and How?Kym from Salisbury TackleWorld has offered his assistance helping to make this years Blood Worm Run a Success for those with a bit of passion and a warm jacket! For anyone interested Kym will take his boat out on Tues the 8th of July (4-5 days following the NEW moon, though the worms could start after 3), and will happily show others the most likely spots and techniques for securing a decent supply of this quality bait.If you are keen Come down to GARDEN ISLAND BOAT RAMP @ 7:30 pm on Tuesday, July 8th.You will Need - Your Boat (to get to where the worms are!) - Tubs for your catch - A spotlight or 2 - A net with a handle of around 5' or more, those with a thin rim and fine mesh work best! - A BUDDY or 2 to help out as you cant do it all by yourself! One to drive the boat and 1 or 2 working the netsAlso make sure you have all the necessary lights and safety equiptment onboard as FISHERIES and MARINE & HARBOURS will be out, keeping an eye on the increased activity.I'm gonna come along too, because I want to see how its done. I asked Kym when it was happening and if he was going. At first he told me he would if someone wanted a hand; then after we had a look at dates and availability, it dawned that the experience of past runs might help others find them too, and hence this offer was put forth! So if ya interested indicate so by posting or sending either Kym (Finatic) or Me a PM to indicate your interest, you are of course more than welcome to direct any questions or comments through the same means.Should be good fun, and if all goes well whiting baits shouldnt be a problem for a while ;)
  5. Im guessing here, but i think he wanted to be burried with them :icon_eek:

oh, Yep that makes sense now! "client" was where i went wrong there, I was thinking what the? but it does make sense, sorry Taker.I wouldnt mind taking my lure collection with me..... trebbles removed of course!
  6. in they went.....arranged nicely too they were. There were lot's of "ooh's" and "ah's" at the after party as well.

what??and yes, Loomis rods are very nice quality, shame there not as big here as in other states.
  7. Heaps goes wrong with those reels and i speak from experience, the experience of all the sad faces as i tell them, 'this happens all the time mate, and we cant get parts" .Like all reels, Bail arms and anti reverses are the first problems, but due to the inferior build quality and materials used, the reels often break (snapp), Gears jam or drags lock and more. but thats enough free market research for u mate!Generally if it is not a brandname reel with the backing of a wholesaler then it is CRAP!there are exceptions but not many......

  8. Braid Line direct to lure..Any one that has fished up and beyond tauwitchere (coorong) knows water visibility is almost zero.Just to find a hole 10 foot deep you need a sounder..So I can?t see the line being visible to fish.

Any one that has fished up and beyond tauwitchere (coorong) knows that the coral formed by worm castings make the use of a high quality leader very important as thin braid will be cut like cotton, whereas the addition of a leader made from hard material will somewhat aleviate this problem!!! THIS IS THE BIG CONCERN, NOT JUST VISIBILITY Ranger and others have been trying to help you, but u cant help an expert...... clearly
  9. Those reels are nothing like an Infeet or Sol??? and dont have interchangeable spools......dont have heavy or finesse drags?+ a Twinpower is almot 100 bucks more!!U sure u got a dilemma there {SMILIES_PATH}/huh.gif

SPARE SPOOLS???? WHAT???I dont seem to remember commenting on SPARE spools??Interchangeable spools, yes and by that I mean SPOOLS OF DIFFERENT CAPACITY WITH DIFFERENT DRAGS (Finesse, OR Heavy Custom ect).As far as I know neither of the reels mentioned have this option, whereas the Sol and Infeet do.MAtt if you prefer the fast feel, thats a good reason to buy a twinnie or stradic, though the TWINNIE would be better imo because the drag is smooth both in the high and low pressures! {SMILIES_PATH}/wink.gif
  10. YakAttacknTackleRat, thats wat i might end up doin....But then theres the twin power or stradic..

-MATT- U Serious dude? Those reels are nothing like an Infeet or Sol??? and dont have interchangeable spools......dont have heavy or finesse drags?+ a Twinpower is almot 100 bucks more!!U sure u got a dilemma there {SMILIES_PATH}/huh.gifMullies that sounds like a nice setup, Care to share what ur fav braid is too? if its a secret how about a pm? Also what loomis did ya get?
  11. Like Yak said maybe a different presentation is required,I,m guessing he's referring to something like a Carolina rig which would give the casting distance required to get the lure out where it needs to be and keep it in the strike zone,or am i talking out my arse {SMILIES_PATH}/huh.gif cheers brenton

Yep ur right Brenton, thats what i was referring to, a rig which allows you to keep the plastic in the zone for the majority of the retrieve not just the pause or drop. Check ya PMs.Yak.
  12. ahh mulies_chaser {SMILIES_PATH}/grin.gif

was it you with the (bendy) Saltist?? ....I thought he was taking the piss... -MATT-The Sol 2000 Spool fits onto the Infeet no worries, in fact i just tried it and it looks s.hot! With that worked out IMHO the INFEET with an extra Sol spool would be the way to solve ur prob. THat way you get the best of having a light weight reel with a finesse drag and can easily transform it into a heavy-drag reel with a good capacity! Also it will cost around the same price as a Sol and I doubt you would notice the difference between using a SOL and an INFEET, especially once the spools are sorted. Remember Sols cost more because they are made in Thailand and not China, from my expericnce with Daiwa, it does not matter where the reel is constructed because as is my understanding all the reel 4 digi gears are cut in Japan, so the assembly is largely irrelevant and effects cost more than anything else.If you want to try different spools on different reels feel free to call into the store or shoot me a pm.
  13. Bream are opportunistic feeders so in general they will feed on what is easiest to come by. In summer when the warm water brings multitudes of baitfish to the surface, the Bream will feed on these and Soft and Hard Plastic Minnows work very well. Same when the Prawns are skipping; then Poppers work.Like Lee i've found that in winter the fish head down deep to where warm pockets of water are. Baitfish and Prawns will be most active here, though not in the numbers or at the level of activity during summer/autumn. Everything seems to be a bit slower and Ripping SoftPlastic Minnows usually stops being so effective. Instead Suspending Minnows, fished dead slow have proved deadly for me. It is also in the depths of winter/ early spring that Lipless lures work best of all. Rattles will draw in fish from the surrounding area and the action can be as fast as in Summer, however when the weather is variable or when the fish are slow and hard to tempt, SILENT VIBES Like VXs or muted Jackals tempt finicky fish. At this time i have also found small plastic grubs to be sucessful, especially if your rigging technique allow them to spend a lot of time down in hte strike zone, which is the key to winter fishing, imho.Well thats probably all wrong, but its how i see it anyway...Yak.

  14. Thought id share this with ya all. Sometimes when you go fishing, even when the fishing is good; its the LAughs and Fun that you have which stick in your mind. This footage was captured by chance........Enjoy,

">Ps. I hope the reduced quality wasn't too bad, i made it small so all could watch, let me know if i should upgrade it.
  15. Just recieved the new mag this arvo and it looks great! Some interesting stories there by the looks, im looking forward to reading about the YAk fishing from Seacliff and for Bream, plus the Callop on Rattlers looks the goods too!U'll all wanna get this one before ya mates do!!Rob: Its got your name on it! {SMILIES_PATH}/smiley.gif

  16. SMITH SHIRASU LIPLESS[/size:2huz5hs1][/color:2huz5hs1]Posted Image Just got my hands on these and they look pretty good! The sinking Shirasu Minnow (with bib) has been a great little producer on Bream, Salmon and Tommies so when I heard they came in lipless I naturally got a bit excited!Well they rocked up today and now I cant wait to fish 'em! Colour 11 with a Green belly and Glowing Back looks GREAT, I cant wait go drop it below a school of baitfish in westlakes!! [/size:2huz5hs1] more colours too...Posted ImageWhadda ya think?? Used em ya self?

  17. INFEET are nice rods for the Price and the INFEET reels are also great value imo. They are a 2004 reel, with a ultra smooth light drag and a capacity of 100m of 4lb line. Very simialar to the Gekabijin but a little heavier, no manual bail trip and less crbb bearings, but still very good for their price range! If u want to got the next step up I recommend the Saltist LRF 7'2" rod. I have got one and for light work they are brilliant. They happily cast a wide range of lures and are good for plastics and hardbodies. I have worked Sugar Minnows, SXs, VXs, F and CD5s and more. They weigh only 95 grams!!95 grams means reels feel heavy so a Geks or a Luvias is an ideal partner. Ive got a Caldia Kix 1500 on mine, but i fliked Coreys with a 2000 Luvias and it was PERFECT, best light Combo ive ever picked up!!food for thought Brooksey..
