ive left the bait at home.. drove the 40kms out there, set the rod up, tied the line and sinkers on, then swore, packed up and drove home again one of the best ones was my old boss...him and his bro in law, had an 18ft boat, which got used often, but one night they took the 12 ft tinny to pt lowly for a garfish dabbing night.its around 50kms to get there, and they towed the boat, put it in the water, but had left the engine at home sitting in a 44 gallon drum they use to rinse it.You arrive at your fishing destination only to realise you've left the bloody rods at home....

hahahaha... honestly, ive cast that alvey a bazzillian times, and i can put it most times were i want it, just like most people can do...ive seen some incredible casting among snags on rivers and into gutters not much wider than a ft long and 50ft out by other people before.i put it about a mtrs or so on his nose........the old saying,,, " WHERE YOU LOOK IS WHERE YOU CAST" if anyone happened to be parked up in them 2 boats a few hundred mtrs out the day before, im sorry i cast out further than you were anchored, and dierectly between you both... didnt mean to scare you, but thats what happenes when i somehow put TWO sinkers onto 15 lb line not knowing it would break on the cast.... ( its funny though when ever i use 2 sinkers, it always seems to bust on the cast, with the sinkers heading a friggen long way out past where boats seem to anchor... sorry again lads....)Nev those bubbles you saw coming from the diver, didn't come from his tanks mate. Can't you tell the bubbles are brown, he obviously shat himself when your sinker klonked him on his scone.

no worries sambo.the other pics show him in thw ater with his tanks, and exiting the water with them on, thats when the fisheries bloke turned up for a chat...speaking of which.. had the most excellant chat with the fisheries guy, (mick). hes passionate about his job, and from the chat, its easy to see he cares about the fishing occuring in the area....yep just saw that bit :woohoo: :woohoo: Sambo

yep... correct... he had the tanks on when he was 50 odd mtrs out....read the post where i posted the pic....believe it or not, i can cast a little bit further than when he swam under my line...as the pic shows.rocknev wrote:
In that pic he doesn't have tanks..... He is snorkeling Sambofreddyboy wrote:
yeah a few people have said that... what he NEARLY had was a sinker as a new adornmant in his head.i honestly thought the way the ripples were happeneing, that it was a school of salmon just under the surface.. but they must have bee the bubbles rising from his tanks...by law he should have a dive flag dosent he?cheers fred

thanks sandywhiting for sending me the pic.... missing the other 3 pics, but this will give you an idea of how close he came in... this was after he had already came to shore and took his tanks off, and was heading back out to retrieve a float and jig for another bloke.he swam UNDER my line.this is my 2 piece snyderglas im giving a run for a while...

always amased me just how similar the are sometimes.the changing colour of the snapper gets me... ive caught then deep red, almost white, pink, and a few times they have been almost black, and look so much like a bream its not funny.Yeah mate, if the snapper doesn't come to the party maybe we could spray paint a couple of monster bream red, if we tank the guys up on a few coldies they probably wouldn't notice the difference! What ya reckon?

marko wrote:
now thats not a bad idea.....but mine is still swimming around out there... waiting ....Hey rocknev, I have a mate who does a fair bit of diving, maybe if you tell me where you're goin to give it a go for the snapper I could get him to put a monster one on your hook?

im thinking it was more of an ice breaker of a post, rather than just ask directly for a good fishing spot...

hahaha... not so sure on the number 3... so far ive got the great kayak challenge, and a personal goal of landing a 10kg snapper from the rocks.... cant think of a 3rd...but number 2 may be on the cards.... a bloke my brother knows, landed two fish at 20lb GUTTED from the rocks on friday... and hes taking my bro out soon...i know the blokes brother, and being the former corvette owner we both were, he wants to take me out to this spot... hell im keen...they both use big spinners, but with 50lb braid on them...rocknev wrote:

almost.... damn funniest thing ive done for a long time.... priceless look on my face i reckon when he just popped up....gave him a wave and a sorry mate... then wound in and cast AWAY from him...when he came back to shore, he went directly under my line, and just in front of the rod in the shallows.....So you caught a diver mate? lmao!

so here i was... tried a few different spots, and got talking to a mate with his kick arse ford GT40 replica.... worth 100k.tried another spot, and the water was moving about 40 mtrs out... swirling, making flattened out water.... SALMON on the surface... you ripper.... no lure in my bag, so on with a fresh cuttlie tentacle, and a sinker, picked my spot, and gave it what for.... EXACTLY in the swirling water, about a foot or so in front of the direction they were moving.... waiting.... OOPS... up pops a friggen scuba diver in a hurry... oops... sorry mate... got some great pics on my phone of him when he popped his head up, and then came in to shore...i never said a word, as i would have burst out laughing..AND IVE GOT WITNESSES.... hahahahah... too old bloke there from queensland, AND the local fisheries officer seen the guy come into shore...waiting on sandy whiting to email me the pics....no snapper today.

few years ago, part of my job was to make lead hammers....we would melt 100kg of pure lead, then mix in some white metal...luckily the forman at the time was also a fisho, so as long as he got a few weights, he didnt mind if we made some...only the waste lead was used that came from the old lead hammers which were flattened out, and had to be melted off to allow the new stuff to go on.then we found out just how bad it is to melt lead, for your health, and they contracted the job to an outside place...so if you manage to get hold of some lead, dont be sticking a saucepan on the wifes stove and going for it...OUTSIDE, with plenty of airflow, and even go so far as wearing a mask to reduce the fumes... its not nice stuff when melted.

why an overhead? big baitrunner would be my choice if i was in the market.... far less hassles with tangles and knots...even now after using my abu7000 for 15 yrs, i STILL get tangles in the bloody thing.... mostly at night, when casting into the blackness, and i just cant see the line hit the water to thumb the spool.... instant overrun.ive also had snapper in the boat, scream off, then stop, but the reel keeps turning for a bitgetting another nest to conted with.im doing it wrong,i know i am, in having the backlash a bit looser than whats the norm, but when i like to cast it, i like to get it out there....

ive going to get the tape out and measure that snyder later tonight.... side by side, it definatly isnt much in it thats for sure....

he is a midget.. im 7 ft tall... i wish... vb towers over me, but then .EVERYONE towers over me.was good to see maxy get a workout, and it was actually a lot more bent in that pic a couple of seconds before... typical of my camera phone.. take a pic, and 3 seconds later the shutter actually goes off....maxy has some smell at last, couple of pannies, and a couple of salmon, and also a cuttlfish wing....picture this.... kirk has some old, and smelly cuttly wings, cuts them in half, one for bait, the other to be thrown out as berley... a mad fling of the flap from 30 foot away, and yep... directly into the rod about half way up...couldnt do it again if tried... hheheheheme? never had a bite.....thats fishing.well vb .. told ya you and that rod had some fish in them.... now for an official large snapper to be caught on it.... its coming mate... stick with it.

you need to cook them slow.... and add an old well worn work sock into the broth... simmer slow for 2 hrs, then throw everything away except for the sock and eat that.

hard to find, but a snyderglas 153 matched with an alvey 650 or 700 will stop a biggy.im using a 651 alvey, identical to a 650, but its a deep spool... holds 1000mtrs of 25lb line... that should be enough.biggest ive seen landed on an alvey is a 78lb monster caught a few years ago on the west coast.im biased, biased as hell actually, but beach fishing with all that sand will not hurt an alvey one single bit... if you do get a bit of sand in it ( which is a given when fishing the beaches) just rinse it off in the ocean if need be, and carry on fishing.last year, a freak wave came from nowhere at sheringa, we ran, leaving the rods in there spikes in the sand...completly covered in salt water, and the receding big wave, took my brothers snyder and alvey with it. it was in the water getting rolled around in the sand for a couple of minutes, but when we got it back, it was rinsed with a bottle of water, without pulling it apart, and we carried on fishing...but im biased....all of the combos mentioned are quality gear which will handle what your aiming for.good luck.nev
