  1. i dropped the alvey reel in the shed and took a chip out of... a fair old chunk actually... beeen like it for 18 yrs so its about time i had a go at fixing it.... am taking pics as an interest thing, am using araldite to build up, then sand down and paint afterwards..... so far so good, just needs to dry then another coat to slowly build it up. will post up some pics later ...

  2. hahahaha... took this pic as a joke... notice the car all masked up? i sanded it down ready for paint... just got to wait on a pro painter mate to get his arse to whyalla from adelaide to whyalla to spray it for me...

  3. 33lb is a strange number to get. Near on impossable to guess the EXACT weight with out weighing it

not really.... at the snapper contest when fish are being weighed, you can sort of tell the weight, not uncommon to guess fish with oddball figures.... i even sort of make a contest of it with my brothers.... we always coming up with figures of 9.83, 14.15, 11.68 etc etc...and its VERY surprising just how often we are pretty close to the money...no doubt, with the first couple of fish we see weighed, we get completly wrong... but after 5 or 6 you sort of get ya eye in so to speak...the fish in question i would say would be an easy 33lb, but i reakon closer to 35lb...its a fat fish...
  4. I have proved the last 2 fishing trips that you don't need fresh bait to catch fish.Found a couple of bags of burley cockle from when SFS were doing 2 for 1 cockle deals( they were yellow and dry on the edges) and some old pink squid also from a few years ago. Have bagged out twice on whiting, caught ruggers flathead , tommies and shark.

Im sure stinky off bait works ,but stuff having to smell the shit all day wofting past ya nose with the sea breaze, and having stinky fingers lol
well ... im ready to use stinky bait....Posted Image
  5. only way to settle it is to try it, so next time i go the rocks im going to try a smelly bait, and fresh bait... both squid.... only trouble will be if i catch 2 fish...the smelly i hooked the snapper on last time , could have been a luck thing.... BUT my bro's bait which (fresh) was very close to mine, such is the way we cast from the rocks... he can cast further.( he is a big bloke with a heap of strentgh behind him), but i cast straighter... i hooked up and he didnt...nor did either of us have a bite when the smelly stuff was used up.

  6. hmmm.. might have to empty the freezer on the lawn tonight for the weekend :)

well there ya go.... as an experiment take out a couple of piseces of bait, and do that... chuck em on the lawn, to make nice and stinky.... i would be interested to know which bait cacthes more fish.
  7. hmmm.. might have to empty the freezer on the lawn tonight for the weekend :)

you shouldnt have to do that butters, you usally have left overs in ya boat from previous fishn trips hehehe
that was a sore point when i owned a boat... first trip in it, then pushed in shed for a hoilday in adelaide for week in summer... got home opened the shed, and fell over... WTF IS THAT SMELL.....kicked the trailer out, and hosed the boat very well.... added dissenfectant, and found 2 cockles in the well... JUST 2... was enough to WOW... took a week of so to get smeel out of boat, and 2 weeks for the gargae to airate....
  8. lol,wow thats quite funny,just goes to show :icon_e_biggrin:

was telling another borther about last night... he knows a pro snapper fisherman , who gets his bait out and chucks it on the lawn for 3 days before he uses it....the stinkier the better he said...
  9. thoughts on this please...just back from a rock hop to a spot i know...when i was getting ready i noticed a strong pong from my bucket... WTF... somehow i had put a squid head in the wrong bag, and its been there since friday night...( 3 nights) didnt fancy putting it in the garbage bin so took it to the rocks to feed the crabs...decided to place on a hook and cast it out as an experiment....IT WAS IN THE WATER LESS THAN A MINUTE, BEFORE SNAPPED UP BY A 45CM SNAPPER...who said fresh is best? this head was very stinky, and a dark shade of pink... was discusting used fresh bait after that and didnt have another bite...

  10. only once in 20 yr fishing the rocks have 2 fisheries bloke came up.... and they were complete assholes as well.... the power of the badge....now i do the right thing, throw undersize fish back, and even throw legal fish back. these 2 clowns started accusing us of fishing for squid in a protected area... all because we had a jig in our tackle bag... when it was pointed out to them that i also had a spare tyre in my friggin car and im also not using the jig in the same manner as im not using the spare tyre sort of made him backdown a tad...then he asked to see our measuring device for fish....no problem... i carry a 60cm piece of stick with me, it has a line cut into at the 38cm mark, so i can use on large and small snapper.heaps faster and easier than a tape measure...THIS DIDNT APPEAR TO BE GOOD ENOUGH FOR THEM....so he gets his tape measure out and using a piece of chalk he draws 2 lines on the rocks the legal limit for snapper...so my bro in law cheks his measurements with his tape measure and finds the 38cm as marked by the fisheries bloke, has missed a couple of mm when he drew the lines...we also pointed out to him that the tide was coming in, and when the chalk is washed away will he come back and remark it the correct distance and not a few mm short this time, or can he just use my stick which has the correct measurements on it??? then he starts all the crap about hindering an officer bullshit.... WE WERE JUST POINTING OUT WHAT BLIND FREDDY COULD SEE....WATER AND CHALK DONT MIX, AND IF HE CARED TO VERIFY MY STICK AGAINST HIS TAPE HE WOULD HAVE FOUND IT BE MARKED CORRECTLY...unlike this dipshit i CAN read a tape measure..5 HRS LATER WHEN WE LEFT THE SPOT, HE WAS WAITING FOR US ON THE HIGHWAY....he checked our catch, which were measured with my stick, and found to be well legal... JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE A JOB TO DO DOESNT GIVE THEM THE RIGHT TO ABUSE THE BADGE....ive also had a few come up to me on the jetty, and a couple of times in dads boat.... these bloke were textbook professional... and the other 2 peanuts could take a leaf out of their books.

  11. HAHAHA.... SIMILAR HAPPENED TO A MATE OF MINE...i used to race go karts, and we had a street meeting in pt pirie many years ago, good days race, and we all headed off back to whyalla.... about 3/4 way there we came across one of the blokes with a flat trailer tyre....he had just stopped and was in a panic....he opened the car boot to get the jack out, but the wheelbrace wouldnt fit the trailer nuts...no problem.... just open the back door of the boxed trailer and use the socket set...WTF is the door doing open and WTF is the kart? few of us headed back but only got about 5kms, when seen another karter on the side of the road, he was out in the bushes retrieveing 4grand of kart that had fallen out , and when the wheels hit the ground the engine had started and slowly rolled off into the scrub until it hit a wire fence.few scrathces but no major damage.

  12. Gotta laugh, biggest Dogshark thread gets 9 replies, biggest Sampson Fish gets 1 reply.Me thinks not many of us have got the cash to get out on 1000 dollar charter trips lol :o :o

you got that correct.... and i would gamble on saying,,, eveyiine on this forum from australia, has caught or seen a doggie..... now a sampson fish..... on tv perhaps...
  13. I was fishing for mullys in da lake, when i came across a snag, and yes i lost the lure,(my favorite),i then left the spot to buy a new one,got back to the same spot, tied on newly bought lure,After afew casts i hooked the snag again, but this time the lure came free, and with it came the lure i lost 20min before.Bonus 2 fav lures. :icon_lol:

something similar happened to me last week... got to the rocks near lighthouse at 11:50pm, and it was lissing down, so i set the alarm for 12:30....FORGOT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN 00:30 and fell alseep in the car... D'OH i woke at 5:30 am.... walked down the steps, and there was a float in the water..... even with the waders on it was too far out, so didnt really bother with it that much.i then lost my float and squid jig near the same spot.no fish so after a couple of hours i headed around to backy bay for some salmon.... only small ones so couldnt be bothered.. headed back to the lighthouse and tide was out.went and got my jig back, and also scored the jo-zuri and a weighted caster float that i spotted earlier to add to the tackle bag.
  14. hey rocknev has anyone told you 61 snaps to 9kg of the rocks is frigin AWSOME ;D

thanks..... just got back in from a late night rock hop... i got nothing...not even a touch.... bro in law landed 3 though.... he also showed me how to fillet them...im not game to have a go yet, as i just know i would make a mess of it... :icon_e_sad:
  15. as for me eating fish or anything else from the ocean....PASS on that as welll. to me its all bait, to be used to catch something bigger.....caught a 43cm whiting on a 6.0 snapper hook last year, he got cut in half and sent back out to feed the 75cm snapper i landed with that bait....i dont keep a great deal of fish, just mainly for my kids, and my mum.... the rest goes back as bait, berley or catch and release in the case of snapper.....i just keep enough to keep the family fed....have kept around 20 of the 61 snapper to 9kg ive landed from the rocks this year so far....ALL legal, prob throw in another 30 or so undersize that were released.40 or so dogsharks, placed in a pond until i finish fishing then released, 21 stingrays, either landed and released or spooled me.... and im loving every minute of it....the price of bait is getting out of hand, so if i catch enough to feed something bigger then that works for me....and im fishing sometimes 5 times a week....(heading out tonight for the 6th day in a row.... out of the 5 trips previous ive got 5 snapper, kept just one. thats for christmas night at work since im working.... hes going on the BBQ....should keep the lads well fed.

  16. RocknevHave you ever tried eating a Trumpeter (Shittie)? You sound like one of my nieghbourswho reckons that MY homebrew tastes like shit! He has NEVER tried my homebrew!!! but he tried another blokes homebrew about thirty years ago and it tasted like shit so, he thinks, mine must taste the same. Every body who has tasted my homebrew has come back for more. Perhaps, like me, the Asians that you mention can cook!!!! Like the dozens of Europians that came to my property every Christmas to catch carp for their christmas dinner! I have tried cooking carp every which way but, to me, it tasted awful. Then I was invited to dinner at a Russian's home and his wife served me baked carp which was yummy. I could not get the recipe however because she did not speak a word of English. So I still do not know how to cook carp.I have eaten large Trumpeter and they are very tasty, however, they are almost impossible to fillet, full of little sharp bones like a bony bream which is why they are not popular.RogerG

maybe they are tasty.... was telling a work mate about this thread this morning and he loves smoked shitties.....i will pass i think...the thought of them in a sandwich dont do a lot for me....
  17. When I was a kid in Lincoln, we would often accidentally catch seagulls when throwing out our squid teasers. As we were removing them, the crew from the ships would run over to us, offering to buy them from us.This happened on several occasions, used to freak me out.

WTF....seagull pie? must be asians.....none else i know would even think of eating a gull.... then again, ive seen some asians eat shitties as well....we used to have a bloke at work do it all the time, that was his crib in summer... fresh shitties sandwiches....
  18. im sure many of you who have fished whyalla waters would be familier with the friendly dolphins that get hand fed, and even some people put a fish in there mouth and the dolphins gently take it also...anyway, when they come around the boat and wont leave you just cast towards them and they get the hint and go else where....my dad (r.i.p.) did this as well, cept he didnt see the other dolphin behind it.... the whiting rig sort of went over it, and the dolphin took off at 100mph, dad hung on for dear life as the line screamed off, until the line became untangled by itself....

  19. oops not sure what happened to my last post :Si meant to ask: rocknev was this down westlakes outlet a a month or 2 back? (mite of been more)coz i was fishing over the other side and i saw a guy catch a seagull :icon_eek: wondering if it may have been you??

nope... not me.... ive never fished anywhere near there.... i just hang around the rocks near whyalla, and the once time down to almonta beach.....but at least i know im not along in hooking a gull.... they nasty as well when you try and help them...pecked shit out of me :icon_lol:
  20. im also testing out some prawn oil on the squid jig.... tried it yeterday, and a squid zoomed in, but then backed away.... i had another jig without the scent next to it, but it chose the scented..... then a dolphin came which some local kids fed from the jetty, so that was the end of the experiment as nothing came around then....

  21. we also have caught the same thing more than once...few years ago we managed to pull the same eagle ray 7 times over 2 mths on a snapperdrop... we know it was the same ray as it had no barb, and a scar on its back from something.heavy bastard it was as well....about 5ft across the sings.and ive also caught a seagulllON THE CAST FROM THE ROCKS....cast in and this stupid seagull just dive bombed my line, or so i thought.the casting line actually went straight over the top of him and wrapped around its wing...would it in , got pecked a few times but managed to release it
