  1. Off the PIRSA Website."The fisheries in Spencer Gulf and Gulf St Vincent are generally closed in January and February, and from July to October each year. Fishing periods in other months last a maximum of 18 nights from the last quarter to first quarter of the moon phase. Harvest strategies for each period are determined on the basis of data collected during regular fishery-independent and fishery-dependent surveys"Just a bit of info that might interest some. When the prawns were running on the east coast the creeks and estuaries would fire up, not sure how it is out in the gulf though.
  2. Who gave you that answer Boyington?I wanted to ask what the distance is they are legally allowed to dredge the seafloor from the coast. I have seen these guys all in a line one a little back from the other and to the left and one to the right of the lead trawler. Looks like a jet squadron formation. With the nets down nothing escapes. Anything that gets out of the line of one net ends up in the others.I would have thought they were in pretty close last night..
  3. Where did you want to know about Madplopper? What are you fishing for?
  4. Just looking out from Seacliff and there are 6 boats in a line about 8 - 10 miles out. Looks like pre Christmas prawn trawlers. Do they still drop the nets at this time of the year? I know there is a season on the eas coast but got no idea down here. It is a new moon so that is what I am guessing.Wonder how many coles trolleys they pick up out there!
  5. Standard slices, cast better than jig heads. Sometimes you need the distance in the cast to get to them before they sound. One other thing is to drop the treble and put on a single. On a small metal splice like a sure knight or something the trebles are to small and have a tendency to bend, get some assist hooks and match the size of the hook to the lure. I reckon for the price you cant go wrong. I have used my bream gear on 8 - 12kg Northern Blues but in a tinnie you can chase them. I reckon 15 - 20lb braid would be fine and give you a few extra meters in casting as well. A short butt rod will
  6. I think its the Lefty loop knot that I use.Dont use snaps on light stuff. Only on heavy and when I need to change often. Most times though when your casting poppers and then changing to a slider or diver you need to do it quick hence the snap.
  7. Ahh some great info starting to come out, i use circles on some of my saltwater flies as well Plankton.Might have to get some offset types and give them a crack. UHF how do you go fishing livies? 2 hooks or a single?
  8. Once they are hooked you dont tend to drop them. I find with whiting on a paternoster rig you get less of the tap tap tap and just a solid hook set. With snapps it tends to be the same. We were using them with the kids on the weekend and they hooked up and landed just the same as us.One thing I really like is that they dont get gut hooked anywhere near like a J hook. Makes dehooking the smaller stuff a lot easier.Thats also why I am asking about the offset style to see if they work better or worse I suppose
  9. I have been using the Mustads for whiting in a non offset and the Gama 8/0 - 9/0's in non offset for snapps.. just wondering what everyonne else uses out there and why? Does anyone use the offset pattern and find they gut hook fish at all?

Strike Pro Pygmy. Strike Pro also have a slender whitebait profile in white/translucent that works well, just change your trebles.I like the little duels as well in the same pattern.
  12. I thought it was 50 as well and if your trolling they cant do squat...
  13. Could you catch some of the dragonflys?Maybe a dab of super glue on the head onto the shaft of the hook and trim the wings so it cant fly?
  14. Ditto Nanman.... Mensforth is good though, straight to the point.
  15. You got me UHF!I was sitting there thinking of the plastic but just could not get the name.
  16. Something like this, remeber you can always chop them up to make them shorter.
  17. There is a soft plastic done by Berkley which has a set of two tails off the side. Cannot for the life of me remeber what they are called but one of those on an un weighted hook twitched across the surface just fast enough for the "wings" to flutter could work as well.
  18. Not with tommies but pillies yes, whole.Wouldnt bother filleting tommies until I am fishing.
  19. Thats Cheap...dirt cheap with the bags as well. I had a slice of roast pork last for a month inside a bag in the fridge. It extends the shelf life and keeps the quality.
  20. You can pick up a machine off ebay for around $200. They are not all the same though. There is one that allows you to adjust the pressure which is the one you want. Sunbeam one does not do this.Once you have them sealed they have a much longer shelf life, take up less room in the freezer as they are flat and when defrosted look almost like they were just caught. Tommies dont freeze well and tend to be squishy as soon as they defrost if they have been just frozen in the plastic back.UHR, I think fresh is best, but store bought frozen tommies look like they have been cooked in the sun before the
  21. These ones still had live lice on them. All in the freezer now in vacum bags just like the bait shops. 10 to a pack and enough for the easter break. If you dont have a vacum sealer get one. They actually save you money.
  22. Have a look in one of the fish mongers for tommies at $4.90kg. For those that want to stock up they are the size you want not the big ones.i bought 10kg and they dropped the price to 4.50kg.Cheers
  23. A Port River Gobby.....Sounds like a great bedtime story...
  24. Fishing is not just about catching fish its also about understanding another species and their habitat. Its an outdoors adventure and a science lesson all in one. Addictive as all hell. Always something new to learn. The more people that do it in your circle of friends the better I have found.
