what draws you to bream?Having caught plenty in the Port during the late 70's and 80's on the old frozen prawn / whitebait etc,I don't see the joy.......As Pauline Hanson said "Please explain"......

having caught plenty of bream on bait as well (used to be for a feed) for me switching to bream was part of learning. When I started getting into fishing forums and learnt the age of these bream I was catching and killing I had a new felt respect. The more I read I learnt about finesse gear, lures, plastics, braid, leaders, line....the list goes on. It certainly seemd to be a different world then just drowning a bit of bait on a $20 cheapie combo. As my fishing developed and my gear was upgraded I started getting into lures. to go out and buy a $25 lure, whack it on $50 + braid, specific leaders, won't (mention the cost of the combo) it just seemed to be a bit more of an art than sitting on my ass waiting for a bite on any old rig. The lure has action yes, but to impart your own touch and tactics was something else. Then to have the confidence to take that expensive new shiny lure and throw it into snaggy areas all part of the charm. The challenge has certainly taken over for me. Everytime I throw a lure in the water, I feel it has a chance of being slammed and that drag goes singing into action. The excitment of surface action is something else as well that you just don't get with bait. Lures you can fish top to bottom, bump through snags, rocks, reefs etc and and just seriously have some fun with them. Some species you catch on lure just don't put up much of a fight. Bream on the other hand can seriously pull hard and play dirty when they want. Thbis is where the apeal of the light gear comes into it. You always have fun reeling a fish in but measure the fun of pulling in a 1kg bream on 10kg line versus 1-2kg line. Huge difference !!It's hooked me in and I will never go back to fishing for many species with bait. The reward and joy of lures outweights shear numbers 10/1 in my eyes.Any way... my2cents... :P
  2. Reminds me of when I was racing the rubber ducks with surf life saving. We used to strip the motors and trying to get the pull start cord back in with the spring... arrrrghhhhh.... Would drive me insane !!!!!Well worth it though !! :)

Yeah mate, was Southern area.I hear you, I thought it was a joke but my mate guaranteed me that when they "come on" it wont matter what is on the hook, sure enough, frozen heads of old tommy's and whiting, insane! Pieces of cuttle fish that have been in the sun all day, crazy!Plenty of berley, pillies and sauries, and tuna pellets worked a treat for us.I couldn't believe it!As for the depth Jags, we were only in about 24 foot ;)

    24ft :blink::blink::blink: Ok, youv'e got my attention
  4. Sweet action champ. Southern area I'm guessing.Interesting the whole bait debate... get it....Old stinky stuff versus fresh. You hear of the old pros.old boys that use stink rotten crap and smash em. On the other hand, guys will go out and catch the fresh for use straight away. Both work and both have their merits. What sort of depth were you fishing. Thinking of taking the boat out Friday night to chase some ;)

were a good spot to go mulloway fishing between sellicks and southport beach . thanks

Personally, I would try between Southport and Sellicks !! Think you have answered your own question here. If not, have a look on google earth and take out the places you can't fish from ( landbased I'm guessing ) and there you have it. At least a couple of spots to try.Good luck.
  6. I have had session out of Pt hughes where the water has been boiling !! We flaoted unweighted pillies and gar back to the hot zone holding tight by reef and just held on. One of my most memorable snapper sessions yet ! Season later, found a nice deep gutter by the reef and you could watch them swim through from the boat. Lots of bust offs but when they're on I really didn't care about losing the odd one here and there.I was catching gar on top, whiting, sweep and big leatheries on the bottom and snapper everywhere !!Was there for the weekend so only took what we really wanted from the day ! 7. If your talking about a particular spot south of Pt Hughes in shallow water then yes you can expect to catch them year round. Probably just not in huge numbers. I normally do a trip over there this time of year and always do well around there but have pulled many mid winter also. Always a top area for most species ! 20lb leader should be fine. Plenty of guts to it, so perhaps the snapper may have taken the hook deep and rubbed it off ?

  8. Consdidering a new rod for the bream comp this sunday ( good excuse any way ) and was wondering what those with knowledge thought....being matched to a sol 2500 reel. Do I go the purpose built 6101-LXS bream rod ( apparently only 250 made ) or do I go the general purpose 701MLFS which I can get a bit cheaper ??Has anyone used or felt the 6101-LXS ??Thoughts... comments ???All appreciated !! :)

And for this I thank you!! We used to go snorkelling on the old jetty and dive down the pylons getting all the jags and rigs off. Literally a bucket load one day!! Along with that, we used to spear heaps of snook under the "T" section.
  10. Softy, rods have to be checked in. Even if small enough to fit into overhead luggage cabins as the are considered a prohibited item. I have purchased a qood quality rod holder and a 3 piece that fits into my suit case to over come these issues after being denied !!I have even put them into my golf bag when carrying that around as well.

I HATE to say it but this is starting to remind me of the sort of carry on I used to see on another site :angry: I know I'm not the Forum's Head honcho, or even involved in the SABT, but If I was your mum I'd whup some of ya asses :P;) Sorry if that upsets anyone but it's true Hey are we Fishos trying to help each other out or what ? Has anyone actually asked Brent directly what the problem is or thought there may be more to it than meets the eye ?lazylure wrote:

no need to write tons of dribble.

geez boys .better still JAGGER, delete this whole thread

 Writting stuff like that when all we are trying to do is help won't get you a seat on anyones boat IMHO
True lazzy, but then haven't we all said something we might regret when we're upset ? I'm sure Brent would have his reasons, but why not just ask him whats going on ?Brents not expecting to start at the top, and I dont think he's in a position to own a boat, so I think he's just "putting it out there" to see what's around
No offence and nothing pointed at anyone especially you AFF, but this isn't exactly a work place where as a supervisor you have to stop and think/ask about what MAY be happening in someones personal life before giving them constructive chriticism, this is a topic on bream tournaments where people in the know have offered some very positive/truthful comments about the sport and it has been taken negatively by some members. No one is doubting the commitment or knowledge but a general understanding can change one's opinion/perspecitive. Some of the guys here have offered some valuable info through previous experience and instead of deleting this topic I think it more pertanent that it is left for others to understand how to go about perhaps getting a ride and a start in Bream comps.I was lucky enough to have a ride offered to me hopefully based on my boating knowledge and appreciation rather than my lure fishing knowledge and ability. I certainly never take it for granted but if I really wanted to get into it I would be hitting several sites, topics, coming down and lending a hand to the boys on the day... bascially doing what ever I could to get involved. As they say, good things come to those who wait and being negative will never get you anywhere. Not exactly sure what you are refering to on "other sites" AFF but this is an open forum where everyone has the right to an opinion and the chance to voice it. What I have seen on other sites has been childish and no thought process been put into the post. I guess that's the difference here. People do think, care and respect other fisherman enough to try and help them out even if they can't see it from the inside.Anyway..... I really do hope you get a ride one day Brent, look into every avenue mate and I'm sure you will get there.

been trying to get on a boat for last 2-3 years mate.even disposed of some lures because of the lack of responsebrent.wont lose any sleep over it, thats for sure

If that's the case, with all that extra money lying around, buy a cheap set up and get into it. Then it will be you that will be looking for a team mate for your ride !!

    bumpdunno why i bother

Brent, I will only offer this once mate. Would you like me to edit the bottom bit out for you ??The reason I ask is that you want something. This site is one of the best ways to get want you want and THAT is why you bother !!I have seen a few guys get rides in boats in both fresh and salt comps from doing exactly what you have done.... simply ask !!Look at it this way.... if you don't get a ride this time round, someone may keep you in mind for next time.Chin up champ :P
