  1. Its a public lake and you can yak and fish where you like except in the signed areas. Why buy a house on a public lake if you dont want people out the front?? Dont like it? Move........

Just to note some of the locals hate the dragon boats kayakers and skull boats as much as they hate the fishermen.
  2. No disrespect to anything people are saying here, about baitfishes ect.But two things that in recent times that really P me off are used gulp packets and also disused braided line.So I think its a case of making sure as individuals we do the right thing, whatever type of fishing we do,unfortunately there will always be an element ,no one likes to pick up after someone else, but if a local sees us being proactive it may go a little way towards better things ,[what else can we do?]Only recently been giving WL a bit more serious attention but have seen this at a couple of spots.Fair enough, the guy with the big house having a crack, but technically he chose to buy a house with a pontoon sticking into the water,if you went across his land to access it,yeah you are in the wrong. But being on the water casting at it ,whats wrong with that. And as for threatening to put a bullet in your head, just shows that even if some people have money ,it doesnt stop them from being a degenerate A hole.I would fair dinkum tell him to go and get Fckd, and tell him if he threatened me like that again the cops would be paying him a visit.Threatening life IS a criminal offence. My 2c

Well I have been known to put my foot in my mouth before :)Seen and caught plenty of bait plastic bags .not to mention rolls and rolls of discarded fishing line on the banks and cockle, mussel shells cooked crabs .Not to mention the number of undersized Bream left to rot on the banks and in the power lines at the bower rd end of the lake.Along with the odd used condom in the carpark at the bower rd end who wants to own up to them lol.As i posted i just leave footprints in the sand as I walk by and flick my SW Flies.
  3. Giday Highfly :icon_idea: As im only new to bream fishing, dont have a boat, only get to lure fish for bream a couple of times a year as i live in the bush, mabbee you can P/M me as to where these so called BIG BREAM in tonnes of areas are . I just hope there somwhere around the bottom end of westlakes as thats close to the area where i stay :-X :-X peelipeeli 13Im like mickyj i only leave my tyre tracks and footprints where i fish thus ensuring a welcome back  :fishing:

One tip watch the edges of the lake if the dragon boats are going up and down.you would never believe the size of the fish that come form the middle of the lake.
  4. Most of the offenders are just ignorant. Whats needed is more education, Its usually the guys that cant afford the decent gear and just dont know how to find or catch the decent fish that do this. You will find that as their fishing improves so will there " fishing ethics".Fisheries have to prioritse. Its the blokes with the $100,000.00 dollar boats taking 300 / 400 kilos of snapper a night. Or poaching several thousands of dollars of Abs a night that the fisheries would be concentrating on. Rather than the land based pensioner that cant afford to by bait so they dig it themselves and then take a few u / size bream to eat. These blokes are eating fish from the Port River. I feel sorry for them dude. Who would u rather get caught ?

BOTHBut the little old man/women/kids or ethnic Aussie who doesn't speak or read English .Should get a written warning(in more than 1 language) with something being kept on a computer system like they have done on Border security on the TV.So that the next time the fisheries come around they know what size fish to keep.Tough but fair .Get caught twice throw the book at them so to speak. The guys with the big boats etc same thing applies second time just like they do to people who make sell drugs take their boats houses cars away .See if they offend a second time .really we as a nation are to soft on offenders you dont like it dont break the law simple.Just what i think .
  5. I dunno if I had a $1000,000.00 dollar house I wouldnt want dudes parked out the back of my yard all day long either. I understand where u r coming from but once u let someone there then u have to police it. Eventually u will have the yobbos and the rubbish and the swearing. They bought a property with the view of the water not some yobbos arse crack all day long. :icon_lol:Dude theres plenty of Big bream and mullies in tonnes of areas u CAN fish. Places like the inlet pipes and whatever Im glad there out of bounds.

I agree with you re the houses .I personally would like the place off limits to BAITFISHERS.And before I get in a heated debate we all know the ones I mean. The people that bait fish and leave rubbish behind or keep undersized fish.My reasons I hate being told you leave your rubbish behind you fisherman etc etc .I leave nothing behind unless I have a break off other than my footsteps .BUT just be aware there are more and more no fishing signs going up around the lake spotted another one by the outlet today. And I tend to upset no one unless they say something to me first.BUT I have had council inspectors watch me they must have gotten bored, didnt catch anything and i never left the lake :)Cheers
  6. After being told last week that all fishermen leave their rubbish behind by a council worker .And me telling him nicely that, that would be bait fishers. As a fly guy If I leave anything behind by way of gear it costs me money !!!I would think sometime in the future we may get banned from fishing west lakes .More signs are going up like the one near bower rd end of the lake indicating the distance from brdiges(not bridge there) to be kept clear and not fished.Interesting for me the 20m rule if I am out in front of a house in the water after walking from the beach.Where does the 20 m start and finish.Personally if bait fishing was banned and it was turned into an artificial only fishing zone the locals and council might be friendly towards us .And just a note the council worker and local I was chatting with have no love of the DRAGON BOAT club either .Plus the skull boat users have language a problem seems they only use the fowl kind ;)according to a local .

  7. Re the Torrens, I stand corrected as I was wrong. Was there a channel which ran into the port river or was it more like a flood basin ??

Perhaps I am not totally correct either.when I was on leave I was chatting with a couple of old blokes.they told me the torrens flooded both ways towards the Port and the Pat.and Breakout creek had something to do with it as well
  8. Was just having a PM with Petermar .And I said it takes a special breed to enjoy like love fly fishing .Now I am in no way an expert my failure at chasing Carp is proof of that .BUT what makes Fly Fishing so great for everyone .Me I love the hit on a fly I have tied myself.Love the fact not many of us are doing it and we stand out from the rest when we do .And I love being told you can't catch fish with that, the priceless looks the same person gives you when you catch a fish while they watch.Still I am not a 100% sure what makes it so great Cheers

  9. [i heard last night they were surface feeding on flying ants at the lake.
A mate who has a dozen or so decent trout in his backyard pond reckons they were going ape pooh for the Ants, leaping like crazy, eating thousands of them :oSorry to hear about your misfortune Mickyj, hope you find a solution soon. A fly reel after all is little more than a line holder and virtually anything does, so I reckon go back to your old familiar until you win "Power Ball" :icon_e_biggrin:Cheers, tonyb.funny thing tony the old el cheapo reel feels bloody great on the pflueger .In fact it feels lighter than the Irsih reel did .But when I held both without line the shakespeare was heavier.Had fun this morning wading and casting no fish but it was fun.
  10. Just an update .Tried the cheapo Shakespeare reel on the pflueger rod this morning.Worked a treat nice and light .BUT next time I will change the line to sinking as the flies I tied didnt sink ;)Next step find the BREAM ::)

  11. rough, Good luck mate.

The wife said no to sending it back to Ireland to get fixed .The amount it was going to cost I could buy a very good reel for here in OZ.I still have my Shakespeare Combo reel from the$60 fly combo I bought that got me going. So I can at least still hunt Bream at the lake .Hint Bream I am coming back get awake ;).I heard last night they were surface feeding on flying ants at the lake.CheersMick
  12. A sad day today guys.I had decided to chase some Bream this morning no matter what the wind and weather was like .I arrived at my favourite spot got my waders out the car.Got dressed in my waders grabbed my new fly rod and my back pack.Got my REEL went to put it in the rod seat and snap .A small section of my reel snapped of the seat part.So no more 400 dollar irish fly reel the hardest part will be telling my parents it was a gift from their o/s trip.Back to my $40 shakespeare reel for awhile for me :(

  13. Well what can I say about today .Lets start by warning everyone its snake season and be on the alert for snakes when going through grass etc .Scouted along the Torrens again in an area I have walked many many times before. There were stretches of this section that looked like they would be prefect to hold carp .But no way was I going alone in a snake infested undergrowth(yes I am a coward  ).And of course the main reason was the steepness in some sections of the river bank .There was no way with my knees was I able to get amongst the long reeds that hid my pray.So on I walked passed the many ducks and the mother Swan and almost full grown cygnet .I came across a pool I had stood at with out my gear weeks earlier, and 1 failed attempt with gear .This time with mother and dad water hen going off at me and baby water hens going underwater I stood .Looking at the water in what I thought was a vain attempt to see my pray .I saw a fishy shape swim under a water hen.Was it a carp or a catfish not really sure I kept watching. Water movement at the edges on the other side are they Carp.Well I thought lets get some bread out !! And while throwing out some pieces I saw a very large Carp glide under the water .Something like a silent white pointer .Then I saw more and more .Water was going off with fish at the other edges .Some of these fish were huge .And you know I was getting confused not one fish was coming up to the bread floating on the surface .While standing there watching these fish two things happened one, I realised they were not interested in eating. But more interested in each other and as my wife said when I got home latter it is SPRING.So I swapped from a bread fly to a gold headed nymph to see if they would take a fly under water.I was casting at what could be called 3 fish orgies going on in different spots in this pool .And you would guess it I was catching Grass reeds etc on the other side .As well as rocks and algae stuff in the very shallow water some of these big fish were playing in.This was happening in something like an inch of water at the edge of the pool!!Oh and I forgot the second thing that happened .Nothing was stopping me from casting at these fish I kept casting and casting .While I was casting I was aware that this dead bush by the waters edge kept moving.I kept casting and looking finally 2 lizards came out .I tell you this if a brown thing had slithered out (in my youth I had been chased by them in this area)I would have sprinted up the hill behind me  And just after that while trying to get the attention of a very large and fat Carp I managed to catch a gum tree behind me .I was getting to hot and thought thats it Im off but I will be back .So in summary another fish less day .but there are some very big fish in that old river and if they all breed its going to explode with fish.Cheersuntil next time

  14. So what a disaster yesterday was.The fish well there were six very huge Carp and some smaller(well they were still large) ones .That I spent nearly two hours virtually feeding them bread .Trying to get them to take a bread fly and then a woolly bugger was very very hard to say the least.I think next time I will try harder to hide from my foes .When I left the largest Carp was looking at me while sucking in a large piece of bread. Then the trip home was very bumpy stopping at the lights etc .Didnt think a lot about it cursed my falcon at every light .got home five to ten minutes later went out side and watched my Radiator fluid making its own river in my drive . :(So 7.30 this morning dropped her off at the radiator shop in the port.First diagnosis the radiator may just be blocked as the fluid is coming out the over flow tank .Fishing is postponed for today . :wink:Cheers

  15. @mickyj , rang n left message on answering machine.i know BIG IAN has crab baits from todays effort, biggest 70cm and damn fat, we estimate over a kg of eggs, and was it fun on my bream gear. you betway to go Brent There is a nice quiet hole near where I grew up .not the best for us fly guys but I am going back there during the week.To see if I can bag a carp on my fly gear.I guessed the two I saw(well I fed them ;)) were 50cm's and fat.Could be longer .I'm on a mission to bag a Carp on a fly
