  1. Now I am a fly guy as everyone knows .But watching Fishntrip on fox they always have Soft plastics on and catching bream snapper(a very large one in whyalla on this show) etc.But what got me to stand up and take notice was them catching whiting using soft plastics .Two different types of worms cut down were doing the trick. And just a slight finger tapping on cork rod butt was doing the trick on whiting and red mullet.Just thought I would pass that along in case they replay it again.

  2. I am not an expert Tony but if the reddies take a bream lure then they "should" take a bream fly.Something large and flashy perhaps .Or have a look at COD flies they cod also work .Let me know if they do and I may move from teh slat to teh fresh :)

  3. Good on you Micky, you only live once so you might as well get what you want.Tonka is going to let me have a play with one of his one day but i fear it may be another addiction. cheers brenton

Brenton as I told the guy in the shop .Yes they had a fly guy in there lol.I don't want to go back to bait .Finally a rod that will not fly apart after a few casts or feel like a broom stick.Cheers Brenton I enjoy reading your posts by the way inspires me to get out there
  4. Good one mate, but how about a picture then...Must be nice to have a missus that doesn't go off thier rocker at ya when you buy a new out-fit.. ;D ;D

I will post a pic latter when I have some time.Well the wife wanted me to as I got a windfall and hadnt bought myself anything with it .
  5. From Ranger in part: Before being earmarked as a residential development it was just sand dunes which interested no-one.Yes on the Western side of Military Road. The rest was a stinking swamp, where the Riverside golf club is now, there was a track which if one followed for about 600 metres led to a scramble track ( moto cross nowdays) and woa and betide any rider who left the track at a great rate of knots, when returning (which was not easy) the rider was black(as the ace of spades) and was on the nose, no self respecting person would go any where near him, phew........... :icon_evil:btw, not sure why refering to " West lakes council " no such body exists. West Lakes comes under the jurisdiction of Charles Sturt Council.

I remember being a kid and driving past the place and the stink was shocking .Brother in law used to going rabbiting in there
  6. Was going to search for a new 6 weight fly rod when I was on leave in Oct .But went into the tackle shop in the port .And well was going to laybuy it .The wife walked in and said how much is it ? Told her and she said stuff the laybuy just buy it ;DSo I am now the proud new owner of Pflueger Trion Graphite 6 weight fly rod .And she feels so light heaven comes to mind ;)Just need the weather to improve ;)

  7. Pretz43The billabong would almost certainly hold redfin perch and catfish and a good chance that there are a few trout surviving in the holes along the creek.MickyJIt would be unusual to see trout when walking past since they have excellent eyesight and are very shy. Sitting still, with back against a tree or dense bush, so that you are not silhouetted against the sky, is the best way to eyeball any fish, polarized sunnies help too since they remove the glare from the water. Floating bread will often attract fish even if they are only curious but a square of cheddar(Tasty) cheese is great for attracting trout. I have caught many brownies on cheese where flies and lures have failed. About a 1cm cube on a 4# hook is just right. If it cant take a 4# hook then it is too small to catch, leave it to grow up!RogerG

I was thinking of Carp RogerG.In my youth I would walk along the Torrens and see some very large fish .Before the ducks came along you could get them excited as hell with a good long burley trail of bread .As I say Trout I know nothing about :)
  8. i cant say i have ever seen fish there but i havn't really had a good hard look either lol. I might go and have a look now :)

Perhaps when the weather is warmer take some bread with you or commercial burly and throw some in the water see what happens .
  9. i have a large creek that flows by my house most of the year except in the past year or two with the drought lol. anyway there is always water there even if it is not flowing. would there be any trout there?

As a novice to Trout it could have you seen any fish by walking past the creek?Trout Carp redfincould all be in any of our creeks Not to forget Catfish and native fish
  10. MickyJ regarding Squid on flies, these might be the go with a treble stinger on the tail. Note that the eyes are rattles and are available in much bigger and louder styles. The tails are "chrome" plastic braid but I might just tie some mono and thread it through for the stinger. It would require a 7-8wt fly rod to cast these but you would not want to use anything smaller, especially if the Sambos are around. I just might have to cobble together a brand new fly for targeting squid. Thanks for the idea.Posted ImageRogerG

Roger they look like they might work my bright colour flies seemed to bring them in .I was getting funny gentle strikes for about a month. The best i could think of was like a crab taking your bait while bait fishing. Then one day off one of my beaches i haunt I saw them not all at once but 6 different squid .the largest of them were over 30cms.West lake beaches when the fish are on they work very well.
  11. I think I was approached by one of their members back in Summer and he indicated that their private dams were not that good anymore. But seeing we have had rain who knows.

Pretty sure they are still good! Dont know who u were talking to! 20 dams all over the hills i dot think theyd all go bad at the same time!
As I said it was in the middle of summer Yak with a drought and I had just fly fished 4 hours on the lake;D.He did lose me after he started quoting prices on joining and being on probation and doing work for the club etc.If it was the same fly fishing club .
  12. First of all welcome to the site Pretz43.If I was you I would go and join SAFWAA who are a good fishing club. they have stocked dams on private property across the Adelaide hills. I used to be a member many moons ago when they first started up, great club at least it was when I was a member, but from what I hear it still is.also there will be people in the club who could help you with the fly fishing, but you will find them here too.My best trout was a 6lb Rainbow from one of there dams :icon_e_biggrin:but im sure there will be others here who could suggest other options.Cheers Ian ;D

I think I was approached by one of their members back in Summer and he indicated that their private dams were not that good anymore. But seeing we have had rain who knows. And nice to see you found this one PretzI hope the guys can be helpful
  13. I use a 9/10wt for most of my jig head flies with WF 10 sinking line and 9lb tippet on a 100mm Olympic and medium to fast retrieve, bloody good fun when the lizards latch on.The one with the stinger I usually use an Abu MT-561CAM (Muscle Tip) with an Abu 6500 cs reel. They all troll fairly well behind the boat and are good on big snook and sambos. I especially like to use the big flyrod around the creek mouths North of Pt Broughton for lizards Also I use a 7/8w with straight flies for bream.MickyJ, I have only ever caught squid on commercially made squid jigs never on a hook RogerG

Thanks Roger earlier in the year at one stage at West lakes 6 different squid were chasing and getting my flies .could never land one they always spat the fly but seeing your fly got me thinking again.Next project after I catch a fish on a rattle fly of my makingCheersFlattie would be great on a fly
  14. Green works on flathead as well as Bream and ST's ?Roger have you caught any squid while using that Fly with a sting ? Only ask as i had 30cm plus squid follow some of my bright flies earlier in the year.
