Hi guysI went to a number of tackle stores during the week (SFS and Ray and Anne's), looking for the yozuri oita cloth jags. In particular, I'm looking for the 2.5 size in green.Does anyone know of any tackle shops that have them? All the tackle shops seem to have got rid of the cloth ones and now have some very interesting colours (one looked liked nemo!).Please let me know.David

The one with the bigger spool is the older one.Yes, that does make some sense but I thought that it was the length of the spool, not the width that helped with casting distances.So back to my original question - what reels would people recommend for fishing off the rocks when targetting fish like snapper?? What about the Diawa Excellers or the black and golds??David

So you reckon that the wider the spool the further the casts??The spool is probably only about 3-5 mm bigger on the told reel but the casts would be around 15 - 25 metres shorter, which is substantial when trying to cast as far as possible.David

They are all eggies.The one that I have been using is a Diawa Jupiter-Z 4500, which has been faithful to me except that I'm now starting to have some issues with the drag. So I updated to a Okuma Interceptor IBF60, which was on sale at time.I'm running the same line on both of them and even adding extra weight on the okuma still doesn't get the same distance.Looking at the spools, the diawa is definitely wider but they are both the same height.Both reels have a spare spool, which I put on 5.5 kilo onto (for chasing salmon off the beaches) and have also found the same with the lighter line. Very frustrating.

Hi allI've got an old reel that I recently updated to an okuma but have found that I'm not getting the same distance as the old reel.I use this reel for fishing for snaps/etc from breakwaters/rocks, so need to be able to cast heavyish line a fair way out. The line (maxima) is between 10 - 16 kilos (depending on where I'm fishing) - any suggestions??I'm thinking of changing from mono to braid to assist in the distance stakes but don't want to load this onto the okumas, as they don't seem to last that long (my smaller models are happily rusting away David

Hi allWent for a walk around the lake on Sunday afternoon and noticed how low the water was. Anyway, as I was walking, I noticed a couple of razorfish in the water. As I kept walking, I noticed more and more - in water about waist deep.As west lakes is only a small area, if you are interested in collecting them, only take a handful, as they will easily disappear from over collecting. Also, make sure you wear gloves as there are blue ringed octopusses in the lake.Also, don't be tempted to eat the hearts, as the eating of shellfish in the lake is prohibited after rain and I wouldn't risk it during other times either.Good luck.David

My favourite is green in the 2.5 size but I have a large range of different sizes and colours, as you never know what they prefer on the day!!David

I'm looking at getting some 80 pound braid for my reel and have been looking on ebay and almost all of the braid available is this dyneema brand.Has anyone ever used it before?? Is there beter braid on the market that I could be using?? David

When you are fishing around the pilons, the extra 30 pounds is very useful!David

Thanks guys, hopefully will be able to have a look around tomorrow. I'll be looking for something that is rated to 50 pounds, as I intend to use 80 pound braid on it. My friend has this type of set up (although his rods are only around 5.5 foot) and the snaps still get off but sounds ok. One of the guys I met on the jetty the other night uses 150 pound braid - overkill in my books!!David

Another useful attractant is cod liver oil. Smells shocking but I sometimes use it when targetting gar and have done well.David

Thanks guys but 7 foot is a bit short for what I'm looking for. Dropped into the SFS and they have their live fibres on sale. There is a 10 foot model (two piece) which looks ok and for under $200, I think is pretty good.Now I'm trying to convince my wife for an early Chrissie present!!David

I'm looking at getting into the braid market. What are the brands that you guys think are the best to use?? I would be getting the 50 pound stuff for the bigger stuff like snapper and kings off of jetties.Let me know.David

Not sure why but my PM's aren't working!Anyway CK, I'm definitely looking for a two piece rod that is around 8 - 9 foot maximum. The reason for this is that I don't want to be carting a longer rod on wallaroo jetty and I don't stick rods out of the windows when travelling at speed, so needs to be able to split in two.Ranger, just saw the section for the rods. CalI have seen people digging worms near the rocks at the subbase but it looks like a lot of hard work. Are you talking about the little red worms that are found under the rocks??This is the spot where I get my tubies from but haven't been there since last summer.David

Thanks CK.I had a look at a custom job but at around $430, I couldn't justify that for one rod!! Not sure how much the wilson livefibre rods are. I know that they used to sell them at amart allpro at mile end (quite cheap) but they don't sell fishing gear anymore.Daivd

HiJust sent this pm to finatic but thought that I would also open it up for other suggestions.I caught my first snapper last year (92cm off of wallaroo jetty) using a friends rod and now I'm after one myself. I'm after a snapper rod that I will be using landbased (mainly off of wallaroo jetty). I have an egg beater reel to go with it (Okuma baitrunner) and would be looking for something with a tip that is sensitive to bites but has enough guts to put pressure on the fish when they go for the pilons. I was originally thinking of a wilson rod but am open to suggestions. Could you give an idea of what you have that would be suitable and roughly how much??ThanksDavid
