Dorsal Fin - SA Fishing Report 20/01/2016

  • I'm sure people will be making the most of the Australia Day make shift long weekend by having Monday off to have a 4 day break. Weather looks to be OK with temperatures that won't melt you and winds being only light to moderate for most of the break.

METRO
Southern areas like Brighton have been fairing well on the garfish while in other areas they have been reluctant to bight. Trick is getting out there very early and also try the beaches early morning for the garfish as well. Crabs are still in good supply from the Silt grounds right down to Grange and beyond. Shipping channel and off the breakwaters are also producing a feed. Jetty anglers are also getting a feed of crabs, tommies and some garfish at night during the faster tides. Whiting are around off Grange but not in big numbers. Snapper have been slow in close around the metro area but there is good catches direct west towards the Black Point line. There has been some good flathead being caught on the northern grounds and also out from the Grange patches. Port river mulloway were slow but there were still some smaller ones caught off the Outer Harbor breakwater. Mullet schools have filtered into the creeks running off from the North Arm down to St Kilda with still some small salmon trout amongst them. West Lakes has improved for the mulloway and some large bream has also been caught. There is also some garfish and mullet at the southern end.

YORKE PENINSULA
Crabs have been doing very well in most areas like Ardrossan, Black Point, Port Vincent, Stansbury, Port Broughton, Wallaroo, Port Hughes and even as far south as Turton. Whiting continue to be in good numbers south of Wallaroo, Balgowan, Port Victoria and Port Hughes. Hardwick and Turton were a bit slower than normal. Snapper catches were small last weekend due to the tides but this weekend should improve. Ardrossan, Black Point, Port Vincent have been the main areas on the eastern side while out from Turton and Corney Point, Whyalla, Arno Bay and a few at Port Augusta was the better areas on the western side of the Yorkes. Garfish are in good numbers for people fishing off jetties. Places to try are Moonta/Port Hughes, Port Rickaby, Stansbury, Edithburgh and Port Vincent wharf. Squid are still in reasonable numbers off Pine Point, Ardrossan, Edithburgh, Port Vic, Port Hughes and most jetties. A few kingfish have moved into Port Vic and sometimes come right into the jetty so keep an eye out. Tuna are still duing well off Althorpes and also in behind Wedge. Always remember to take a good variety of lures with you as they can be very particular some days and can make it a long day for zero. Marion Bay has been doing well on big whiting east and north of the jetty. For beach fisherman there are still some nice size whiting at Pondi. Nannies are in good numbers around the edges of Susans along with some kings.

SOUTH
Tuna has been slow out from Victor but you have to persist on blind trawling from New Headlands to the Pages. Waitpinga has salmon trout with salmon coming from the rocks between Waitpinga and parsons. Some nice sharks have come from the beaches off Goolwa and the Coorong has plenty of shoolies in the upper reaches around the reefs. Mullet are also in the area. Salt Creek is still doing well on the mulloway and remember this weekend Sunday is the annual Kingston fishing comp. Good luck to all who are going. Should be some good weigh ins and it has great prizes and is for a good cause.

FRESHWATER
Lots of people have been holidaying on the Murray and the boat traffic has caused a bit of a slowing on the natives but there is still some nice fish to be had if you get out there early or even later in the afternoons when the traffic slows. A few reports in the upper reaches at Renmark have seen a few nice cod caught and released but not in big numbers.

Tight Lines to All from The Dorsal Fin Team.

Our East coast Pillies are selling well and we have had some great feedback on the quality. Thanks to all who gave us the feedback. Remember we also have some nice whole squid and some top berlies.
