Port Lincoln fishing report 03/04/2014

bjorn2fish
  • Garfishing has been very good with shore-casters and boaties all getting feeds of plump fish; successful locations are the north shore, Porter Bay, Grantham / Murrays point & Lincoln Hotel and town jetty.

Seven year old Bailey was out fishing with Pa Rod Scharfe in Proper Bay recently when he caught the nice whiting he is holding up in the photograph. Cockles proved Bailey’s secret weapon in keeping up with his Pa and he has earned many more trips out fishing in the boat.

Gunyah Beach is now Tamika Short’s favourite fishing beach. 13-year-old Tamika is holding up a brace of salmon, the first she ever caught. Congratulations an excellent effort on the very good size salmon.

Now on a sad note, this is my last column after 23 years, I would like to thank everyone for their contributions and stories making it such an enjoyable industry to work in.

Steve Forstner is the new owner of Spot On and is keen on the tradition of continuing this column and assisting people to enjoy their fishing and catch a feed or two.

Thank you all and I hope to see you on the water, on the beach and on the jetties.

Now for what was biting and where

Sheringa

The first beach has seen catches of Tommies, Mullet, King George Whiting and a few Flathead. The Salmon beach has good numbers of Salmon around the 3 kilo.

Farm Beach

The algae bloom has really affected fishing especially along the coastline between Farm Beach and Pt Drummond.

You can scratch up a feed of whiting between Longnose and Pt Sir Isaac’s; the bycatch will be salmon trout, and a few trevally.

Offshore fishing has been excellent on nannygai and snapper, Greenly Island has been very quiet but Rocky Island was OK for tuna, kingies and Samson fish.

Coffin Bay

Unlike Farm Beach fishing results have been very good with happy anglers getting nice bags of legal whiting, garfish and salmon trout. Shore casters have also been happy with their catches.

A word to boat anglers, if you wish to fish at any of the oyster leases, please ask the operators who, in the main, are very co-operative with the recreational sector. However all it takes is 1% unthinking person to muck it up for the 99% trying to do the right thing.

Port Lincoln

Garfishing has been very good with shore-casters and boaties all getting feeds of plump fish; successful locations are the north shore, Porter Bay, Grantham / Murrays point & Lincoln Hotel and town jetty.

King George whiting have moved on to the winter bottom in Proper bay, and there are nice fish in the passage as well.

Schools of salmon off the southern beaches from the Salmon Hole right through to Millers Hole around the 2-3kg mark with some salmon trout, sting rays and some bronzies as well just to make it interesting.

Louth Bay jetty has seen a few snook and some garfish being caught, squid have been quiet off the jetty but boats have been doing better on squid and whiting.

Jetty fishing at night ( North Shields, Town Jetty and the wharf) sees tommies, snook and an occasional whiting coming in. Yellow fin whiting catches are spasmodic but the anglers are well and truly out there looking for the schools to move in and stay.

There are no reports of tuna around Low Rocks, Williams and the Neptunes; the Cabbage Patch is a better option.

Tumby Bay

Try the Sand Hills for Garfish, and King George Whiting.. Out at the group for King George Whiting you will have to move around a bit there are plenty of snook and garfish The jetty for some Garfish .

Port Neill

The jetty and break water for Tommies, garfish ,in good numbers Squid and some Snook Try the beaches for Yellowfin Whiting on the incoming tide. The boaties have been catching King George Whiting , Snook and Squid There have been some big Salmon from the beaches south of town.
