bjorn2fish
  • The Main wharf was very consistent for small to large tommies, salmon trout, chow, slimies and the occasional snapper. Proper bay had some catches of whiting up to 40 cm plus. Whiting were also found along the north shore, Taylors and Thistle Island. Yellowfin whiting schools have been sighted along the foreshore in small schools. Squid have slowed down but enough can be caught for a feed.

Blue Swimmer Crabs are still being caught and are mostly good size.

The Arno Bay Hotel annual fishing competition is on this Sunday 8th of March. For more information phone Arno Bay Hotel on 86 28 0001.

Just to prove that you don’t need to go far from town to get some good Blue Swimmers, here is a picture of on caught close to the Axel Stenross boat ramp by John Thomson this week. We also have a picture of Wayne Gotch with a nice Kingfish that he got on a recent trip to NZ. Choice! And we also have a picture of Lenore Morton holding a nice Salmon she caught at Hopkins Island.

Now for what was biting and where

Venus bay

Whiting have been patchy but if you’re prepared to move around you should find them. The jetty had medium size tommies at night and trevally during the day. Offshore boaties got onto a few nannygai.

Elliston

Garfish and squid were found off the jetty and Tommies were in good numbers. Whiting and Gar were also on the bite in Anxious Bay.

Locks Well

Good numbers of salmon have been caught averaging between 3 - 4kg.

Sheringa

Off the first beach, there have been Tommies, Whiting and Mullet in big numbers.

Salmon have been schooling up in large schools very close to the beach and reef. Average size has been between 3-4Kg.

Almonta / Gunyah Beach

No reports.

Farm Beach

Smaller sized King George Whiting have been caught by boaties. Up around Coles Point, boaties have been getting on to a few nice sized Snapper and nannygai.

Coffin Bay

Wide of Sir Isaacs has seen some good action on Snapper and Nannygai.

Tuna and Kingfish have been good with the Hummocks and Rocky Island being the standout spots. Small Tuna were found close to Greenly Island but not in big numbers.

Lots of Salmon Trout have been following the pilchard boats in. Whiting, gar, trevally and salmon trout have been found around Coffins in good numbers, but make sure you check them for legal size as there have been plenty of small fish. Try around the Ledge area for some better King George Whiting.

Port Neill

There have been plenty of good sized Squid caught off the jetty this week. Garfish and Tommies have also been good off the jetty. Yellowfin have been a bit quiet from the beaches, but they are there if you move around. Wait for the wind to die off to find them schooling up.

Boaties have been doing well on the Northern grounds for Garfish, Whiting and some nice Snapper.

Arno Bay

Some Snapper have been caught out wide. Yellowfin are also around on the beaches, but the windy weather has been breaking up the schools on most days. King George Whiting, squid and garfish were good in close.

Cowell

Blue Swimmer Crabs have been caught throughout Franklin Harbour, off the Jetty and out in deeper water in good numbers.

Yellowfin Whiting have been in Franklin Harbour and Snapper are OK offshore when the wind dies off.
