Port Lincoln fishing report 09/07/2015

bjorn2fish
  • Now that the wind has died down and most days are calm, plenty of anglers have headed out and most have caught quality fish no matter what species they have been chasing. The Australian Salmon fishing just keeps getting better, with fish consistently being caught in the 4 -5 kilogram range. Squid in all of the local bays are small, but plentiful for boaties and shore based anglers and while the King George Whiting have been difficult, they are still there for those willing to put in some effort. Remember that the Australian Salmon Championship is still running, so get an entry and hit the west coast beaches for a chance to land some big prizes.

Hi Everybody,

Here is this week's fishing report. Remember, if you have any photo's of that prized catch, just sent them to portlincoln@spotonfishing.com.au with a brief comment.

Now for what was biting and where

Elliston / Sheringa
The Salmon Championship in Elliston has had it’s 3rd fortnightly mystery weight prize announced. Paul Elliot from Wudinna and Dave Billings from Port Lincoln share the prize, their salmon both weighed in at 2.985kg. Walker Rocks has King George Whiting and Tommies, Locks Well, Talia and most other beaches in the area have been producing large Australian Salmon consistently in the 3 – 4 Kg range. Sheringa has been producing King George Whiting, Tommies and some nice sized Mullet around First beach. On the Salmon beach, there have been a good run on 2-4 Kg Salmon and 2 whales were spotted on the weekend.

Almonta / Gunyah Beach
We have only had minimal reports come through the shop over the past week of Australian Salmon. Reports received have indicated only a few fish of up to 1.5Kg on pilchards.

Farm Beach
Good reports are filtering through the shop of catches of King George Whiting, however size is something that has been lacking. Squid have also been caught by boaties on good quality squid jigs. Garfish have been reported off the sandhills.

Coffin Bay
Fishing along the ledge remains quiet for land based anglers, but boaties are managing some good King George Whiting and Silver Trevally around the oyster leases. Offshore has seen good bags of Nannygai, Snapper and Blue Morwong being caught. There have also been a few reports of Samson Fish when the swell has allowed boaties to get out wider.

Port Lincoln
North Shields jetty for squid in the afternoon with some anglers finding their bag limit very quickly. Australian Salmon are continuing to run along the south coast with many anglers having great success. Best results are coming from anglers using metal lures casting towards a school of fish. Fishing generally improved if pilchards were used to create a burley mix. All local bays are firing with great results returned for anglers chasing Southern Calamari, during all tides and times of the day. Better results were usually due to anglers choosing a smaller sized squid jig or use something a bit more realistic such as a pin jig or teaser. During times of greater tidal movement; Yellowfin Whiting are being caught along the North Shore.

Tumby Bay
King George Whiting are reported being ‘in close’. Only a few reports came from the Group, however those that did fish the deeper grounds found larger sized fish.

Port Neill
The Port Neill area has been good for Tommies and Squid. King George Whiting have been consistent on the northern grounds.

Arno Bay
Only one report this week from Arno Bay. A few King George Whiting were caught in close on cockles.

Cowell
The inside harbour has seen a few squid and King George Whiting caught. No reports from the outer harbour.
