  • The North Shields jetty has had schools of legal silver trevally. Try the main wharf for bigger squid, snook, whiting, salmon up to 1kg, and big tommies. Both Boston bay and Proper bay had reports of blue swimmer crabs, by both land based and boat anglers. Make sure to always check the size as a lot of undersize crabs are being landed in pots. Further along the coast reports have come in from anglers fishing Point Drummond up to convention beach with salmon being around the 2-3kg mark as well as some big tommies from the surf. A few whiting were found at Thistle and Taylors Island. Proper Bay, Spalding Cove and the North Shore were best for whiting at dawn or dusk. Late afternoon is still good for salmon and tommies along the North Shore. Small squid are still reliable of the jetties and in the bays.

Please remember that the Snapper ban has started and does not end until Midday on the 15th of December. Any Snapper that have been accidentally caught must be returned to the water. If possible, use a net and remove the hooks from the fish without lifting it out of the water to increase the survival rate.

The Cowley family returned from a successful fishing trip on the west coast beaches. Schools of salmon averaging 10 pounds provided plenty of fresh bait and fun in-between mulloway bites. Teresa ‘outfished’ the others landing a 124cm 19.4kg (42 lb) mulloway, her personal best. Sue is holding a big salmon, Graham a 120cm mulloway, and Ash with another good salmon. The only photo of Chook we have is him coaching his better half as she fights her mulloway.

Brock scored this triple header of nannygai using jig-em squid rigs. These plastics are very effective when used with a small piece of bait for snapper, blue morwong, nannygai, and gummy sharks to name a few.

Now for what was biting and where

Elliston / Sheringa

Boaties got onto good catches of king george and silver whiting. The jetty had tommies, trevally and a few squid.

Almonta / Gunyah Beach

Minimal reports have come through the shop over the past week with a few people fishing Almonta beach catching salmon around the 1.5 to 3kg mark. Pilchards as always was the best bait, however if you are lucky enough to pull up on a school close enough to shore, metal lures make for more exciting fishing.

Farm Beach

Mixed size whiting have come from the Fence line, Gallipoli, and around Frenchman’s. The odd gummy shark has also been caught. Offshore from Sir Isaacs nannygai and 7 to 12kg tuna were found.

Coffin Bay

Salmon trout are being caught from the main jetty in excellent numbers whilst pilchard boats are unloading. Fish are very consistent and biting on both baits and lures proving to be good fun for anglers.

King george whiting seem to be on the smaller side with more undersize fish being caught than legal ones, so if you are targeting whiting make sure to check the size of your fish. Most reports have come in from boaties with minimal land based anglers reporting king george.

Plump legal silver trevally and snook are being caught, mostly being reported by boaties. A couple of kingies were hooked and landed by at least one dedicated angler fishing from the rocks.

Tumby Bay

Whiting bit well out at the Group when there was decent tidal movement. The jetty had some tommies and squid while the salmon seem to have left Second Creek.

Port Neill

Boaties are finding good sized king george whiting, however are struggling to find fish in schools and are reporting odd ones and twos. Snook and squid were also reported by land based and boat anglers in good numbers. The jetty has good sized garfish and big tommies being caught all day, with the best results fishing the afternoon high tide. 1 to 2kg salmon are being reported by anglers fishing the rocks and beaches south of the town.

Port Lincoln Anglers Club

The 16th of November is the AAA Freshwater comp and the 17th is the SAPC freshwater light line comp held in the Riverland.
