  • Squid are still the main target species off local jetties. Sizes seem to have improved for anyone who braves the cold wind. Yellowfin whiting are being reported from local beaches with Lamani’s being the hot spot for some nice sized fish. Garfish were also in the same areas. Proper bay and Boston Bay had squid. A few whiting were found in the Proper, with some bigger fish around Taylors Landing, the Lumps, and Thistle Island.

Now for what was biting and where:

(Very few reports have been received in the shop with the recent weather conditions keeping a lot of fishos indoors.)

Elliston / Sheringa

The winner of fortnight ‘3’ of the Australian Salmon Fishing Championship is Vanessa Pointon from Pt Kenny. The mystery weight was 2.830kg and Vanessa’s fish weighed in at 3.150kg and was caught at Talia.

There were 6 days with no fish being weighed out of the fortnight. Huge seas, wind and rain hampered fishermen, but those that got a line in the water were rewarded with nice catches of salmon.

Try the Elliston jetty for tommies, and local beaches for king George whiting. Talia, locks wells and Sheringa Salmon are averaging 2-3 kilograms. Sheringa beaches also had whiting, tommies and mullet.

Almonta / Gunyah Beach

While large amounts of algae along Gunya beach made it impossible to spot any schooling salmon during the past week, fish were still caught around 2-3 kilograms using pilchards. Fighting large swells made it difficult for anglers using lures, and bait fishermen had to increase the weight of sinkers to keep them from washing up. Driving conditions along the beach and sand dunes were reasonable with the sand being compact from recent rains and previous vehicle tracks.

Farm Beach

Whiting were there for those that braved the cold and wind.

Coffin Bay

Salmon trout, tommies and some whiting throughout the bays.

Port Lincoln

Squid are still the main target species off local jetties.

Tumby Bay

Try the jetty for squid, salmon trout, and the odd king George whiting. Second creek has had reports of salmon trout, whilst boaties at the group have found good king George whiting numbers and thousands of red mullet.

Port Neill

Boaties are doing well on whiting, in the northern and southern grounds of the township (weather permitting). Snook were also on the chew. The Jetty had tommies, a few gar, big squid and the odd snook. Smaller salmon are being caught from beaches south of the town.

Arno Bay

The jetty has squid and tommies, boaties are doing well on whiting in both northern, and southern grounds.

Port Lincoln Anglers Club

Nine members and two visitors attended the ‘heaviest bag/ Pat Prow memorial’ outing on Sunday the 13th of July. Anglers were faced with moderate S/E wind, a big swell, a big rip along the beach and some algae. Fishing was very difficult, with fish being scarce; especially the bigger salmon. However salmon trout, tommies and mullet were caught. 2 whales in the vicinity also proved to be exciting for anglers.
