  • The town jetty and wharf is continuing to produce smaller squid at all times of the day. Squid were also around Louth Bay, North Shields and Spalding Cove. Tommies and salmon trout are also being caught on baits and lures, however better catch results occur when burley is being used. The Sleaford to Wanna stretch of coast had numerous schools of 1 to 4kg salmon. Finding them within casting range can be tricky but when the sharks, seals or dolphins push them in close some brilliant lure fishing can be the result. We haven’t had any reports of whiting in the bays but Spalding Cove on dusk would be worth a try. Whiting have been reported between Carcass Rock and Taylors Landing, the Lumps and Thistle Island. The Passage had some nanny’s and the occasional Samson fish.

The image below is of an average sized Australian Salmon that was caught by Steve Forstner from one of the local surf beaches. The Lure is a Lazer Lure 40gm in white, but most metal jigs and big soft plastics are working well when you locate one of the many schools along our local coast.

Now for what was biting and where

Elliston

The Elliston jetty has Tommies, Garfish, and Squid. Salmon chasers had luck fishing Mt Camel with fish caught reported to be ranging from 2 to 5kilograms.

Sheringa

Sheringa’s beaches have some good schools of mullet which have been holding close to shore if burley was used. Good catches of king george whiting and tommies were also reported. Salmon around the surf beaches are also averaging between 2 to 5 kilograms.

Almonta / Gunyah Beach

Salmon are being caught along Gunya averaging from 1.5-5 kilograms. Anglers are reporting that a lot of smaller fish are easily targeted using metal lures with the larger fish preferring baits. Algae is still hanging around the beach making it difficult to spot schools at certain times, however anglers who persist through this had success.

Farm Beach

The beach is still soft for launching bigger boats. Those who fished grounds north reported good whiting numbers but keep an eye on the size. There have been some big Garfish and some nice Silver Trevally. Try off Point Sir Isaac for Nannygai, rugger Snapper and maybe the odd Gummy Shark.

Coffin Bay

A few big whiting were found off the rock ledges along with salmon trout and tommies. Whiting were mainly undersize around the Brothers Islands but a few squid, salmon trout and Garfish were caught.

Tumby Bay

Boaties are reporting good sized king george whiting, sweep, squid, red mullet and trevally from the group.

Port Neill

Boaties are catching good size king george whiting. The jetty has some big garfish and plenty of tommies biting best during calmer conditions when burley was used. Good sized squid are also being caught from the jetty and surrounding breakwater.
