  • Things are starting to heat up on the fishing front with Tuna, Kingfish, King George Whiting and Blue Swimmer Crabs all being reported this week. The local bays are full of baitfish, tommies, salmon trout and the squid numbers seem to have increased as well.

Now for what was biting and where

Elliston / Sheringa
The salmon on the surf beaches are hit and miss at the moment. There have been a few King George whiting reported in Waterloo Bay. Sheringa has seen Tommies, Whiting, Mullet and a few nice flathead caught by shore based bait anglers.

Coffin Bay
Big snook, Tommies and salmon trout are appearing in Coffin bay. There is also a few flathead, garfish and squid inside the bay. Soft plastics are accounting for most of the flathead. Out on the reefs, the Blue Morwong and Nannygai continue to keep anglers busy. The King George whiting have been more consistent along the ledge and out at Farm Beach, but undersized fish are plentiful, so make sure you measure all of your fish before putting them in the esky.

Port Lincoln
Blue Swimmer Crabs have started to appear in better numbers in Proper Bay. Size is a bit down at the moment, so make sure you have a crab measurer with you and stick to the regulations. Kingfish from 1 – 12KG have been reported around town but most hook-ups have resulted in anglers having less gear and the pontoons and jetties gaining some jewellery. Surface poppers and Shallow diving minnows have been the most popular lures for chasing these rat kingies.

There have been some big, fat tommies and salmon trout reported between Stenross and the North Shore. Look for the working birds as they will show where the schools of baitfish are. Try surface lures for a bit of fun on the tommies and Salmon trout.

Small tuna have been reported south of the passage. From the reports, they are under 5kg, but a good sign of things to come. Nannygai, Blue Morwong and other reef species continue to be plentiful and are being caught by both bait and jigs.

Tumby Bay
The group has seen some very nice king George whiting being caught, mostly around Spilsby Island, but all areas are worth a try.

Cockles and squid have been the best baits. Silver trevally, salmon trout and tommies are plentiful in the marina and are good fun on light line and small minnow lures.
