  • When the weather permits, Garfish are being caught in local bays and around the boat ramps. Gar have been a bit finicky at times with many anglers reporting great numbers of fish, however were not biting at all times. Some anglers believe that they used too much burley giving the fish a feed rather than just attracting them.

Proper bay has seen some big Blue Swimmer Crabs, some up to 80cm across the claws. King George Whiting have been hard to find, but of a good size. Silver Trevally up to 40cm have also been reported and are great fun on Whiting gear.

Rick Elliot is pictured with a genuine 19kg Mulloway he caught recently from an undisclosed location on the Eyre Peninsula. Also we have Aiden(13yrs) & Paige Barcak (7yrs) who were visiting their grandparents Grumpy & Maxine Gotch. They went out to the Group and the result was Aidens first Snapper at 49cm and Paiges first Whiting at 44cm. Well done kids!

Now for what was biting and where:

Not too many reports over the last week. Despite the holidays, the wind has kept most people on shore or inside.

Almonta / Gunyah Beach

The onshore winds have made avoiding the weed difficult, but if you find a gutter or hole that is clean, Salmon up to 3kg can be caught on pilchards.

Farm Beach

Plenty of small King George Whiting have been caught and released by boaties, with legal size fish harder to find. Salmon Trout, Tommies and Silver Trevally are also about.

Coffin Bay

Salmon trout from undersize to half a kilogram are being caught from within the bay and esplanade by both land based and boat anglers. Casting or trolling smaller lures is an effective way to catch them. Garfish can be found by berleying the rock ledges.

Tumby Bay

Snook, Garfish, Tommies and Salmon have been reported from the Jetty. King George Whiting have been consistent out at the Group along with some big squid.

Port Neill

Garfish, Tommies, and squid tend to be the popular catches from the Jetty / Breakwater, with some nice fish being caught during the day with best results being on the incoming tide. Whiting bit well on northern grounds and a few rugger snapper were in close.

Arno Bay

Snapper are still a bit hit and miss due mostly to the weather. King George Whiting have been good in closer when the wind has been blowing. Blue Swimmer Crabs are also about in good numbers.

Port Lincoln Anglers Club

The Port Lincoln Anglers Club will be holding a ‘heaviest bag competition’ on Sunday the 8th of February at Convention Beach. The event will commence at 8am and finish at 4pm, with members and visitors welcome to attend, leaving from the Kemp street clubrooms.
