Port Lincoln fishing report 30/10/2014

bjorn2fish
  • Squid continue to be a good option for the land based fisho. For the boaties, there have been plenty of options including Salmon to 2Kg, Snook, Trevally, Tommies and bigger squid. Most people that have caught King George Whiting have reported that they need to move around a bit as most drops seem to produce 1 or 2 fish only. Mussel berley has proven to bring the fish on the bite.

Along the surf beaches, schools of Salmon have been seen between Sleaford and Wanna. Some of the schools have been huge, and if you are lucky enough to encounter them within casting range, almost any type of lure is successful.

Around these schools of Salmon, there are plenty of sharks, mostly Bronze Whalers, so be careful, but they are a good option for heavier gear with a couple around 7 foot caught and released.

There have also been a few reports of Blue Swimmer Crabs around, but keep it quiet……….

Just a quick note to announce that entry for the 2015 Riviera Port Lincoln Tuna Classic are now open. Entry forms and competition rules are available online or we have some at Spot On in Port Lincoln. The welcome / briefing night at the Marina Tavern is on Friday 10th April with the competition starting on the 11th.

Now for what was biting and where

Far West Coast

Reports of good sized Snapper and plenty of mid sized Mulloway have been filtering into the shop. Squid and fresh salmon seems to be the best bait. There are also plenty of big Salmon and Whiting available, so don’t restrict yourself to just using big baits.

There are also plenty of Bronze Whaler sharks in close if you really want to test your gear.

Elliston / Sheringa

Salmon continue to be the main focus, but a few anglers are also taking some nice King George Whiting in the area.

Almonta / Gunyah Beach

Salmon, Salmon and more Salmon are available. Most anglers are managing to find the schools along the beach, so keep moving until you see them, then try casting metal lures or big soft plastics for a bit of fun.

Farm Beach

King George Whiting and squid are improving in size for boaties. One Sampson fish around 30kg was landed well offshore from Sir Isaacs as well as one fish of similar size that was lost during the fight. Some big nannygai had been reported reaching up to 60cm in size as well as some rugger snapper.

Coffin Bay

Silver Trevally and whiting are in good numbers around the oyster leases and the Kingfish are still lurking about in non sanctuary areas for those that are patient and ready with a lure or live bait. The occasional legal whiting was caught along the rock ledges along with salmon trout, tommies and trevally.

Good sized King George Whiting have been reported out at the group but are hard to find. Also caught was the odd Snapper, Red Mullet and Squid.

The Sand Hills area has been good for big Garfish when the wind is down.

Port Neill

Snapper, King George Whiting and a few Bronze Whalers have been reported north and south of Port Neill.

Arno Bay

Reports of Snapper and Whiting continue from in close. Blue Swimmer Crabs are also being caught in reasonable numbers.
