Dorsal Fin - SA Fishing Report 02/12/2015

bjorn2fish
  • This weekend is going to be HOT HOT HOT but there is some good news as the winds will be light all weekend. So gety out early to beat the heat.

METRO
Some great catches of yellowfin came from the metro coast and on the northern beaches around Thompson's they are also getting some nice fish at St Kilda. Whiting are thinning out but for some they are still getting a feed around the Grange Tyre Reef, The patches off Brighton on 5 metre range and some nice ones just north of the Black Pole (Limit burley as it will attact the unwanted in this area and also use running rigs to keep the bait low). Some big mulloway have been caught in the Port River with 1 going near the 70 pound mark. Kings are still being spotted but have been reluctant to bite. Mullet are still in the creeks and some salmon trout are still being caught north of the North arm wrecks. Snook are still prolific slow trawling around 4 knots using deep divers and in around 3-3.5 metres of water seems to be best. Garfish are still finicky but this hot weather and low winds will suit the jetty anglers at night but you should still get a feed in the boat during the day if you take the float off and drift the baits back. Believe it or not this is where you can use a fly rod. Bait the hook and fly cast for distance and let it sink using an intermediate weight forward line. Caught heaps of gar this way. Crabs are doing well but again you have to filter out the small ones but there is still some thumpers in amongst them. Squid have been doing well at West Beach and Brighton. This weekend with light winds would suit a late afternoon session for them. West Lakes has good size bream with a lot of small one in between but will keep the kids interested. Try the 2nd bridge area and just north of the rowing club off the beach.

YORKE PENINSULA
Port Vic and Port Hughes really turned it on with the whiting last week due to the full moon. Most were caught during the night. Pros drifting north of Beatrice and around the Moota ara did very well so this is something to put into the bank for the next full moon. Now the full moon has passed the daytime should pump. Try areas like Port Vic out off the reef, Messengers and the 5km ledge west of Goose, Port Hughes on the Rose Garden, Kemps and late afternoons at Coopers. Edithburgh has nice whiting on the northern side of the island and near the oyster leases in Coobowie late afternoons, Hardwick has good fish north of the bay but have to drift, Point Turton is doing well out from Soutter and west of Soutter. A few whiting came from the grounds east of the Price creek but they do go off quick. Crabs are doing well at Vincent, Sheoak, Ardrossan, Port Hughes, Port Broughton,Pirie, Port Germain and Port Augusta. Snook as last week are just going off around Port Hughes, Port Vic, Port Broughton in the channel just after the boat ramp and Port Rickaby. Squid are doing well at Wallaroo, Port Hughes, Port Vic, Port Rickaby, Edithburgh, Stansbury, Pine Point and Hardwick Bay. Garfish have taken residence at the light at Port Hughes with some nice fish being taken. There is also fish at Ardrossan north near the mangroves and Port Vincent and Port Broughton. Yellowfin Whiting are prolific at Pine Point, Port Clinton, Black Point and Port Vincent with best catches coming in at night time.

FRESHWATER
Callop have really turned it on around Big Bend and Blanchetown as well as Renmark. For a bit of fun big Carp can be found at Lake Bonney and in most backwaters. Catfish have shown up around Kadell but they have to be returned.

Tight Lines from The Dorsal Fin Team

And don't forget we will have the Northern Districts Sports Fishing Club here on Saturday promoting their club and what they are about. They will also have a fishing simulator for the kids and adults to try and feel what a big fish is like to bring in. We will also be displaying the Dorsal Fin Boat out the front if anyone wants to look at it for any future hire (If it doesn't get hired out in the next few days)
Try to make it down to have a look at what this club has to offer as these clubs do cater for the whole family. And they are putting on a free sausage sizzle as well.
