Dorsal Fin - SA Fishing Report 04/02/2016

  • What a week, with the new proposals from PIRSA on size and bag limits along with possible closures, things are really heating up. This is the opportunity for everyone to get together and ensure all these new rules don't go ahead. Feel free to go onto the PIRSA site and fill out the 3 surveys to voice your objection. On a brighter note the weekend is looking good both days with light winds and low seas.

METRO
Crabs are doing very well with most getting their limits before lunch. Semaphore, Largs and south of the Silt grounds being the better places but they are getting them south also. Whiting catches have been on the improve with nice fish being caught south of Brighton, Grange, the Norma (Late arvo) and north of St Kilda has been doing very well. Garfish are biting best down south with fish around Semaphore and Largs have been reluctant to take the hook. Try out deeper around the cabbage patch and Norma for better catches.Squid have been slow but with the big blow last week things should improve with the clearing water. West Beach and Grange along with east of the Black Pole was doing OK. West Lakes has been doing well with some nice bream and small mulloway being caught along with some mullet. Port River has been a bit slow but the odd small mulloway have been caught near the sub corp and around the North Arm. Bream have been small in the Port River with plenty of them caught but not of good size. People fishing off the Outer Harbor breakwater have been doing well on crabs of late and should do well this weekend.

YORKE PENINSULA
Plenty of crabs are coming from Port Broughton, Wallaroo, Port Hughes, Port Victoria and in most towns on the eastern side. They have also been getting a feed as far south as Point Turton. Squid numbers have improved at Wallaroo, Pine Point, Edithburgh, Stansbury and Port Hughes with other areas being spasmotic. Snapper are doing well off Ardrossan and south of Black Point on good tides but are hard to come by near the dodge. Edithburgh is also doing ok on the reefs and wrecks. Plenty of snook are coming from Wallaroo, Port Hughes and Port Vic. Whiting are still firing at Wallaroo south, Port Hughes, Port Vic, Balgowan and Hardwick Bay. Garfish are pretty prolific around the light off Port Hughes, Wallaroo, Port Broughton, Port Vic, Hardwick, Point Turton, South of Ardrossan, Stansbury and Edithburgh. This includes jetties mainly early mornings and late afternoons. Tuna are still being caught south of Marion Bay and west towards Wedge. Be aware there is some big fish amongst them as one of our customers found out south of Althorpes where the played a big fish for sometime only to loose it at the boat (Including a $100 gaff). Some nice beach fishing down the bottom is happening around Dolphin beach and Pondi with some nice garfish, tommies and the odd whiting being caught. Salmon have been coming into Browns now and again but not in huge numbers but enough late afternoons to keep the enthusiast happy. Mulloway have slowed a bit off Berry and Gleeson's but should improve with the warmer weather coming back.

SOUTH
Mulloway are still being caught at Salt Creek but it has slowed slightly. A few Gummies have moved in of late and should continue till April. Waitpinga still has salmon trout and there has been a few nice salmon come from the Deep Creek area. Those venturing out from Victor have been finding tuna but not in big numbers and mostly blind trawling. Cape Jervis south west of the ramp has some nice snapper on the drift grounds. 2nd Valley has some squid and Rapid Bay has tommies of varying sizes.

FRESHWATER
Had to head to Tailem Bend last week and on the way back went to a few areas to have a look and found a few people fishing. Surprisingly they were telling me they have been catching some nice callop and the odd catfish but not a lot of carp. In other areas the callop have been small with the odd callop going about 40cms plus. The shrimp were hard to get but the warmer weather should get them going again.

Make the most of one of the best summers for a while with those bad south easterlies not being a constant pest.
