Dorsal Fin - SA Fishing Report 12/08/2015

  • Spring is not that far away and it looks like we are going to get a taste of it this weekend. Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday look like cracker days to get out for a fish. With the new moon on Saturday, Wednesday will be the final run of the bloodworms so if you want to get out and top up on worms then Wednesday night should be the go (Weather permitting).

METROThere are good numbers of whiting south of west beach along with plenty of squid. Several bag limits came from there last week. Semaphore and Largs has a sprinkle of whiting and a few squid out from Bower Road. Some small garfish showed up near Grange so it can't be too long before the bigger ones move in. Grange tyre reef has whiting just before the tide stops then they go off. Norma wreck has small whiting and there is some squid in the area. You can get some ni9ce whiting around the silt grounds at the moment but you have to work through the small ones to get a feed. Small garfish are also in the area along with some nice blue crabs. The northern beaches like Thompsons and Webb are producing some nice yellowfin whiting and salmon trout. Port river has been a bit slow last week but should pickup with the bigger tides. Salmon trout and bream have been caught around the wrecks in the north arm and a few mullet have shown up in the mangrove creeks. Heavy burlying is the key to get the mullet going. West Lakes is still producing good size bream but the schoolies have been slow. Mullet have been caught off the beach near the rowing club so there should be some mulloway in that area. Most of the jetties have been slow except for Brighton where there has been some squid. Tommies have been thin this year but once the weather warms up Grange jetty should come back to life.

YORKE PENINSULAWhiting catches have been very good on the Peninsula with Port Broughton on and around the council wreck, Wallaroo out from Messengers and north of Riley, Port Hughes near Coopers and the Rose Garden, Balgowan north around near the cliffs, Port Victoria around the western side of Goose and north of Beatrice, Hardwick Bay north about 5 kms and Edithburgh north side of the island and on the edges of the Sultana passage. Squid are still prolific at Pine Point, Stansbury north of the spit, south of the BHP jetty at Ardrossan and north of Point Riley. Snapper should be at Point Riley after the blow especially with calm seas ahead of us. Take plenty of sinkers! A few snapper have been caught off Ardrossan mainly east of the barrages and south east of Price. Price creek mouth have some nice salmon trout and the odd big flathead. On the foot there are still plenty of salmon mainly at Browns beach, Pondi, Gleesons landing, and salmon trout at Butlers. Some nice mullet were caught at Foul Bay along with some nice garfish.

Waitpinga is really turning it on with the salmon where there has been consistent catches for some time now. Tailor must still be in the area but none have been caught in the last 2 weeks. Those that fish the Deep Creek area have salmon of the rocks along with some big sweep. A friend headed down to Cape Jervis to try for tommies but have not herd how he did as yet. Salt creek had plenty of weed in the gutters which can be a problem but persistence is the key as there are still plenty of fish out there. Below is a tip I will share. Tuna seem to be still in the area off Victor and will stay till the next lot of schools head west in December. This weekend will be ideal to get out and get a few while out for snapper where there has been some nice catches west of Victor.

FRESHWATERSome nice callop have been caught at Big Bend last week as well as a few near Nildotteie. Big carp are biting in Lake Bonney if you want some fun with the kids. Best place is near the bridge at Chambers Creek. Mildura has some callop and there has been a few nice catfish caught also (Which has to be released).

Enjoy this weekend it's going to be a pearler.

TIP FOR THE WEEKWhen fishing the beaches and you are having trouble with weed, instead of just giving up try clamping a ball sinker 500mm up from your hooks and cast up the current and let it drift pass and then retrieve back. Keep doing this continually. The ball sinker can be either 2 OZ or 3 OZ as it will allow your baits to be drifted and minimise it getting tangled into the weed. When your travelling a long way and then finding out there is weed around you don't want to waste the trip. Also if you just want to stick it the rod holder get as close in to the gutter to the shore (Right near the lip) this also minimises the amount of weed you'll pick up and I have caught many of fish right near that lip. Also streamline your baits so they are not so chunky.

Hopes this helps :)
