Dorsal Fin - SA Fishing Report 13/01/2016

bjorn2fish
  • Light winds are predicted for the weekend so people chasing tuna should have perfect weather. Remember to always get an update on the weather just before you go. We had smooth seas early morning on Monday but blew up to over 25 knots while hooked up to 2 fish due to a tropical low pressure. Got a bit lumpy but managed to get both fish in eventually.

METRO
There is plenty of crabs on offer with best catches coming from Largs and Semaphore along with some nice crabs from the shipping channel. This means there can be some good snapper in the same area. Garfish around Semaphore are plentiful but are reluctant to bite. Down south is best around West Beach and Brighton. Snapper are still in good numbers around O'Sullivans but north has slowed. Plenty are being caught some 20+ kms west of North Haven. Squid have been consistent around the Grange to Brighton area. The beach fisherman have been doing very well on garfish very early in the mornings around Tennyson beach and also West Beach. West lakes has been a bit of a hit and miss but some are getting some legal mulloway and some big bream along with mullet. Port river has been quiet in the northern reaches but there are still some nice mulloway in the North Arm and out from the Pelican Point power station and the quarantine station.

YORKE PENINSULA
Well we headed down to Marion Bay and hit the tuna south of Althorpes and did very well. Occasionally you get hooked up to some very lively fish. There is also some nice Blue Morwong and Nannies to be had. Further north of Marion Bay is some big whiting and on the weekend there was plenty of bag limits coming into the cleaning table. Port Hughes has plenty of gar out on the light along with some nice summer whiting further north. Crabs off the jetty are mixed sized but still worth the effort. Wallaroo are doing well on squid, crabs and garfish west of North Beach plus some nice whiting south near Bird Island. Ardrossan has some nice snapper out towards the Barge plus plenty of crabs and garfish south of the BHP jetty. Same are for those shore base anglers have some nice size yellowfin whiting. Squid are off from James Well. Edithburgh did very well on the whiting north of the island and in the bay late afternoons as well as some nice fish from Coobowie oyster leases. Stansbury has crabs inside plus a few garfish and whiting out from the cemetary grounds. Snapper were out wider on the northern grounds. Point Turton was slow for some and great for others but you need to know the area. Best bet is out from Soutter or around the corner in the bay pass the weed line. Did not have a report from Port Broughton but I would say that the crabs should be running along with garfish. If fishing off the jetty expect some trumpeters with a mix of slamon trout and yellowfin whiting.

SOUTH
Salt Creek still has not let up with good catches of mulloway and sharks. A nice school of salmon turned up at Waitpinga for a short while that made the die hards happy. Nice squid were coming from Second Vally and Rapid Bay has been slow with small fish.

FRESHWATER
Some nice callop have been caught in the northern reaches past Blanchetown but no real reports further down river. Maybe our good reporter at Mannum will give us the Jiff.
