Dorsal Fin - SA Fishing Report 19/08/2015

  • Saturday is looking like the day to get out with light winds predicted.

METRO
With the bloodworms running probably tonight things may slow within the Port river system and the outer edges. On are that doesn't get affected is West Beach and beyond. Good catches of whiting are still being caught along with some nice squid. West Lakes is the surprise with some cracker bream being caught and a couple of mulloway got slammed near the rowing club.Snook, squid and whiting came from the grounds east of the farewell beacon in around 9-10 metres of water. Sound around the area where you will pick up some nice schools just above the bottom and use soft plastics for the snook. Drift the area and make sure you have a whiting line down. North of Adelaide around Thompsons and Webb beaches have some nice yellowfin whiting along with some big salmon trout. Hallet Cove grounds are just starting to see some whiting and should improve as the temperature climbs. Some nice bream is being caught in the Onkaparinga along with some salmon trout. Largs still has some squid near the north haven breakwater. While the bloodworm run is on try getting some crabs at the silt grounds as well as some gar which have started to move into the area. If your going to hit the Port River system then use bloodworms for bait. A huge clump of bloodworms on a 6/0 hook and a running sinker should be a killer for mulloway.

YORKE PENINSULA
Well the exodus of the longliners has started at Ardrossan and were spotted heading out from the Port Victoria boat ramp. After raping St Vincent gulf they now want to drain fish from Spencer gulf. THIS HAS TO STOP! This is an indication that the migration could start in Spencer gulf this year but unless we stop these longliners from taking them before they can get to their spawning destinations all will be lost. It has been many years since we have had a big run in Spencer gulf. The last big spawn was stopped at Port Lincoln where all the longliners hammered them before they could even enter the gulf. Lets hope the seals take their fish and the sharks take the seals. LOL.

Whiting catches are still pumping at Wallaroo, Port Hughes, Port Victoria, Hardwick Bay, Point Turton (Has improved), Edithburgh and some nice specimens are coming from Stansbury. Stansbury also has some nice snapper and squid. Boats launching from Pondi and Marion Bay have been bringing back some nice Nannies and some samsons. Most are being caught near Wedge and out from Western River.

SOUTH
Some nice schoolies were caught at Salt Creek over the past couple of weekends which is a good sign for the summer season. Weed can be a problem but persistence is the key. Weed will slow at certain times of the tide and this should give you a good window to keep lines out. Waitpinga is still producing salmon and salmon trout along with Parsons. A friend fished Cape Jervis for tommies and managed only a couple of dozen but he spotted a couple of schools of salmon working along the breakwater and beach on the western side. Snapper have also been good South west of the cape.

FRESHWATER
Another cod was spotted by a customer near the lock at Blanchetown. He was fishing just above the lock and the fish swam up to the bank and then just disappeared. He said it was huge. Good to see there are still some big fish in the area. Anyway he was catching some nice callop in the same area using nightcrawlers. Mannum has some callop also and some small redfin are coming from the Murray Bridge marina late afternoons.

Tight Lines from The Dorsal Fin Team

TIP OF THE WEEK
If your drifting for whiting and you are using a patanosta rig try clipping a squid jag at the swivel above your rig. There are squid in the same area so gives you both chances of catching. When drifting always have a slop line down with a squid head attached to a lump of steel or a brick. This can be a very productive way of fishing as you cover more ground and you can pick up productive spots.
